  1. I enjoy the secondary for what it’s worth. It’s cheaper than most stores that have rare bottles out and also cheaper than stupid websites selling rare bottles. If you need Austin group invites you can PM me, looks like Dallas is covered.
  2. This is not good bourbon for any price. Half as good as Dickel BiB 11 yr for 3x the price. F off, Heaven’s Door. I finally got so tired of looking at this bottle that I used 2/3 and killed it making a reduction for some pork belly burnt ends. You’re welcome.
  3. Eh, I generally like both but have had a couple of BB turds like 2017. I thought I liked ‘19 BB the best until the ‘20 BB beat it side by side for me. I really only wanted the ORVW open on the shelf so people would stop asking why I have 100 bottles open but no Pappy. But in general neither is worth $600+
  4. Those are pretty similar in value. I made that trade this fall.
  5. Speaking of HBS I’m drinking their L’Encantada XO Armagnac tonight. It’s just ok, nowhere near as good as some single barrels I’ve had.
  6. Got my first OF barrel strength single barrel from a local group and I have to say I’m not in love. Hot, lots of young grain and lacking sweetness. It might even have a little of that acrid, bitter oak note you get out of Texas bourbon.
  7. I think we’ve come 540* on Blanton’s and Wellerz 12 from hype to backlash back to love affair. In other news I haven’t dabbled in the secondary in a while so I went hard on a backup ‘90 RY, a ‘15 MBSR and a ‘14 10 yr small batch SAOS. I’ve almost finished a half bottle of the RY stitzel. It’s the Boone County 12 of 80 proof bourbon, so much better than the proof indicates and great for when you want bourbon flavor without getting buzzed.
  8. Spoiler alert, it’s gone now.
  9. Go buy it.
  10. No ice in whiskey by itself, but I admit to being passionate about clear ice in cocktails. I love the slow melt and appearance so damn much.
  11. I picked up a Charbay S this summer and it’s super weird but also pretty good.
  12. 5 yr Heaven Hill wheated? Pretty sure that will just taste like larceny. Good luck.
  13. Are those age stated or just poor man’s RY10 year which is already a single barrel and relatively easy to find at Spec’s for $55?
  14. Sazerac is taking advantage of the slow month to roll out the Thomas Moore finished Barton series. Should be pretty ok, but I’m having trouble imagining the Chardonnay one.
  15. Exacrly. I do plenty of trading at secondary pricing because good luck getting any traction on your trades otherwise. For example this year I paid $160 or so each for two bottles of OFBB and traded one away for an ORVW, which I’ve never found at any price. And I’m definitely part of the scarcity problem with 100+ unopened. But I can afford it and this is America so whatever.
  16. I haven’t done any side x side but by itself I thought the JD was more rare breed rye than THH. Then I traded one of my three away for a B520 plus $40 and felt like I got the better end.
  17. I’m using Cabela’s seasoning, but happy with these 80/20 venison/pork belly snack sticks done on applewood in my Little Chief electric. Not sure why people insist on putting so much pork or beef in with venison when it’s such a mild meat and makes great sausage at 15% or so fat content. I’m super lazy about making them real stick length so I just run a (that’s what she said) super long sausage link and the coil it up on racks. It gets cut to length later and is much faster.
  18. I need that ‘19. Always buy spares when you can.
  19. I might give it a listen. They are crazy sneaky when they want to be and they have a habit of circling you to get downwind and smell you, which is creepy. But don’t listen to anybody who tells you they can run quietly. I’ve been around them most of my adult life and they sound like a heard of elephants when they’re running. They are generally pretty loud when they’re not trying to be quiet.
  20. Ha, I’ve been bluff charged before on Admiralty Island carrying a 10lb BAR in 300 win mag and I was still scared out of my mind. I’m more concerned about not dying than how much it weighs. This is still more portable than a rifle or shotgun.
  21. Point is it could be traded for something in the $350 range. I don’t mind paying secondary for great stuff, but this doesn’t live up to the hype.
  22. It’s good, but I might trade mine away after getting a sample. It’s more like $200 good than $350 good.
  23. Since my wife is the best I now have my first new revolver in over a decade. This 460 will be my Alaska bear gun so I can quit borrowing my BIL’s 44. But since everything is terrible I’m waiting a week to get ammo unless I luck into some locally in Austin. My plan is to start with some 45 colt and work up to the real deal before practicing on a whitetail from my tree stand.
  24. Spec’s guy be like, “it’s our best selling Disney+ tie-in bourbon! Super smooth!”
  25. The ‘19 one is good, haven’t had the ‘20. I picked up my ‘19 when secondary was $165 and then traded two W12 for a 15 year old fitz. The decanters sit on my top shelf looking pretty.
