  1. Picked up a couple of bottles of Hancock’s President’s Reserve this week.  Cracked one tonight and it’s not going to win any awards for being edgy or unique, but damn it nails the easy drinking notes and a little of my favorite stone fruit on the palate.  Call it Blanton’s for when Blanton’s seems to aggressive.  Also only $46 so there’s that.

Do you have to go to certain liquor stores in San Antonio to get a good selection of brands ?  Hit one last night in the Pearl district after the airport drive. Nothing but very average offerings other than Makers and Bulleit 10 year (which we got and are drinking currently).

In SA it’s Alamo City or hope for something lucky at Spec’s or TW.  I’ve picked up a few decent bottles at TW there and would say that people are a little slower on the draw there vs Austin.

  3. I don’t specifically have a dog in this fight, but I was at the game last night giving the LSU fans around me hell for making the game as unwatchable as the last 10 minutes of an NBA game.  The two players down train wrecks were the most comical.  On the second occurrence the player closest to the north end zone popped up to his knees when he saw the other player down then stayed on his knees when the trainers came out and said something to him.  I don’t ever recall that kind of BS on an Orgeron USC defense.

Lockhart BBQ. Can't tell if they've gotten shitty or the Texas BBQ game has been raised so far by the Franklin revolution that what we used to think was awesome is now shitty.

That’s a good food I loved past tense.  It always sucks now.

I’ll probably say sushi.  It’s really only good when it’s really, really good.

36” is shorter than I would want, but go for it if it suits your needs. Or double your budget and get the 24”x48”, which is basically what I have. I got mine on CL for $500 from some dipshit.

I hate you.  I’ve done 4 racks of ribs on my egg and was assuming I could do 2 racks of ribs, a brisket and some sausage all at one time on the 36” which would suit my needs well.

I’d go with one of these.  Not offset/stick I know, but this is my next smoker...

Interesting, but I already have a Lynx gas grill on my patio and have discovered that I only used the BGE for smoking.  No interest in any type of combo unit right now unless I cave and get a BGE XL which I already know exactly how to use.

Intersting. It’s been compared to Bookers Rye and generally gets positive reviews.  Looking forward to trying it tonight.

I haven’t had Booker’s Rye but I’ve had a couple dozen ryes and this one isn’t that special.

  8. Alright, I cracked the lid on my BGE and I’m ready to step up to an offset/stick burner after 8 years of practice with lump on the BGE.  Does anybody have any advice or input on the following three options?

    Lonestar Grillz https://lonestargrillz.com/collections/smokers/products/20-x-42-offset-smoker

Lyfe Tyme Inc - 20l 20”x40” single lid offset

    https://www.lyfetyme.com/pricing/

    Klose - 20”x42” without 1/2” firebox

    http://bbqpits.net/

These are all $1600-$1900 and I’m not really looking to go over $2k.  I’ve had a hardon for the idea of a Klose forever, but the LSG actually looks like a better design with plate construction giving a lot more real estate inside compared to pipe.  I’m also not wanting to wait forever to find a used Klose because football and smoking season is a week away and I need something to distract me from how pitiful USC will be this year.

Any Turkey experts on here? I need a ruling on a “dusty”. I bought a bottle of Wild Turkey 80 with Austin Nichols on the label for $30. Based on my online research, Campari removed Austin Nichols from the label in 2011, so I know it’s at least that old. It looks my bottle’s label was printed prior to 2011. It jives with the cashier’s story that the bottle was in storage for 10 years.

I don’t expect much, but it’d be nice to get a unique, good bottle at that price point.

There are some decoders online if you want to hammer out the date.  I picked a handle of 80 proof AN Turkey from ‘09 last year but haven’t thought of a reason to open it.

I'm sort of interested in WFE 4 year. I've never actually seen it in the wild. Admittedly I don't look for Willet, but all I've noticed is 3 year. Have you tried it?

Yeah, I’ve got a 114.4 proof open and it’s really good.  I bought them every time I found them for $40 or under and used one or two in trades.  It’s nothing like an older MGP or Barton rye, most comparable to Handy in that it’s young and hot-ish but packed with rye spice and citrus.  It crushes even 10+ year Alberta ryes as well.

Speaking of Buffalo Trace I’ve got an extra RHF, ETL, Blantons, WIlliam Larue Weller, and an extra W12 1.75L right now. I’m not interested in selling at the moment but would consider a barter either by the bottle or the lot. Currently looking for OFBB, Old Fitzgerald, and at the lower end 1910 because it is scarce lately (but by itself wouldn’t be enough).

Adding because o know this thread gets read: I don’t flip. I just bought more than I can drink soon. if I don’t recognize your handle I’m not interested, so don’t join surly and DM me.

I have a couple 1910s just chilling. Also a Stagg Jr 11, EHT SiB, ECBP and some WFE 4 yr if any of that strikes your fancy for the RHF.

    Any intel on these?

I’m not loving the Dovetail especially up against the Legent that was less than half the price.

I bought a dovetail because I found it for $74 and the salesman had just whipped out an EH Taylor SiB from the back room and I was feeling generous.  It’s about 1/2 as good as Blood Oath Pact 5 which I’ve seen as low as $88.

I have a 14 yr Barrell store pick from OLC that’s pretty solid, but overall there’s a lot out there better for the price.

What is the collective opinion on the best whiskey (quality not flavor) that is acceptable to mix with soda?  What’s the line that draws scorn?

I’ll do Weller Special Reserve for something low proof or OF1920 for higher.  Booker’s makes a great Manhattan too.

I’ve got 217 bottles, 136 of which are open. And I’m probably not in the top 5 in this thread. I doubt you have too many

If you have a problem I have about 1/2 of an open bottle problem.

Just had Four Roses Small Batch Select - not bad but I prefer single barrel regardless of price. Paid $58 at twin knowing TW would be cheaper but harder to get to in this rain.

Maybe I’ll have a second poor with each just to be sure... science requires rigorous testing.

$56 at OLC when I grabbed one out of his 12 cases today.  $50 cash at Spec’s Brodie later.
