  1. It was kind of a beat down. The Overholt is a way different profile with lots of rye spice and very alcohol forward with a non-distinct nose. The Parker’s has more oak influence and complexity with an incredible nose. The MSRP difference is definitely warranted and I’m not even sure you’d think they were such similar products if you tried them blind side by side.
  2. 10 year Beam rye showdown. Let’s go Hawkeyes.
  3. And cheaper than any high proof, double digit rye Kentucky rye on the market. It’s more in line with pricing on the 10+ year MGP ryes that are normally released at lower proof by NDPs. And the new $100 price point on Booker’s sucks anyway. GTFOH with that price on 6 year bourbon.
  4. I just grabbed one so I can try it side by side with the Parker’s for science. Based on the cases I’m seeing stacked up It’s looking like they aimed a bit high on the retail price.
  5. Half price relative to Parker’s 10 year rye and cheaper than any barrel proof 10 year Kentucky rye that I’m aware of. Seems like a solid value if it’s 75% as good as the PHC, which seems likely.
  6. It’s very good, significantly better than a barell proof 8 year MGP pick I had after to compare. I think it’s the best PHC in years and it’s dropping on secondary to well below the heavy char and double barrel one.
  7. Since we’re doing Rye, time to find out if this year’s PHC 10 yr Rye is really baby Booker’s Rye.
  8. Normally I would say don’t listen to you about MGP, but RC16 is definitely better than than the Remus 14 or 15 from the past two years. I haven’t tried the Remus this year and probably won’t because I went deep on RC16 backups.
  9. Come on now, that’s not accurate. Texas is a challenging market to find the rare items, but there’s also insane selection at many of the smaller stores relative to other states. Other than mid range Heaven Hill products like ECBP/Toasted and McKenna along with Eagle Rare it’s not like you’re finding retail rare bourbon everywhere in CA.
  10. California is crazy. Roughly secondary prices, but what a pile of Blanton’s.
  11. This is pretty decent. Maybe not back to 2018 levels of excellence, but probably worth the $90 to try if you like an oaky palate with some fruit and caramel notes. It definitely avoids the fake age and wet wood nose aspects of some double barreled products.
  12. I’ll do four OF King Ranch.
  13. I would cancel any plans I had that day on vacation to camp on the beach with a bucket of Pacificos to watch this go down.
  14. Raising a glass to Grinch’s firing.
  15. Eric Gentry, he’s the one announcers love to talk about having a 7’6” wingspan while somebody’s dropping 40+ on SC.
  16. Slow going with one very mediocre 7 point and a bunch of does this morning. Now I’m roasting my ass off in shorts in a blind like it’s bow season. Nice views, tho.
  17. Toasted is straight garbage, nowhere near as good as basic 94 pf Elijah Craig. It has a bad wet oak/soggy cardboard nose and palate that I just can’t get down with. ECBP is good all the time and I especially love it in cocktails. The latest C923 is good, but I was hoping for great on the 13.5 years age statement.
  18. Time to crack this 13.5 yr Elijah Craig BP tonight. I haven’t had one open in a minute and reviews haven’t been good.
  19. I would like to try their Blanton’s, the Eagle Rare was very good. Funny on the Parker’s this late while the 10 year rye is coming out.
  20. Holy balls, I’d forgotten how good this Alamo City Widow Jane single barrel was. It’s what EH Taylor single barrel wants to be when it grows up.
  21. Much of the best rye and bourbon is made in big factories. Also, MGP is great so no need to feel bad for liking Bulleit rye. Maybe mix in some Pikesville if you want to try Kentucky Rye from a big factory or the Jack Daniel’s rye.
  22. I have a pre-batch open and it’s just not old enough to get the tobacco and leather notes I like in MGP. Also have a spare if you want it.
  23. Killing a Full Proof while watching USC (we’re back) halfass beat San Jose State. It was very good from start to finish and I’ll probably open either a Deb’s or Whiskey Cake pick next. This one is a staple I love having around.
  24. That stuff is gross, maybe the worst toasted I’ve ever had. And who’s looking for Weller SR and not finding it?
  25. Yep, halibut. Biggest one in that pic is 20 lb which isn’t big, but acceptable. We only fished halibut one day and the weather wasn’t great so I spent way too much time running the anchor winch trying to land on the spots while getting blown around.
