Cool off beaten path places to see for lower 48 road trip
I drove up 95 through Idaho two summers ago and loved it, especially Riggins. There are approximately zero people, the climate is amazing and the scenery is great. Stayed at a couple shady Motels with my boy and then watched USC smoke Wazzu on the Palouse. Highly recommend.

That’s hot, I love the big flared bows on those boats even if it’s something I’d never really want to own.

New boat for Alaska incoming after signing this afternoon. It’s a 31’ North River Offshore SXL 3100 with twin Yamaha 425s and a 25 hp trolling motor. It’s off to the rigging shop now for 3 Lowrance MFDs, a radar, autopilot, vhf and some fishing equipment. Compared to our current 26’ this damn tank that should handle 3’-4’ chop like a champ and hit damn near 60 mph on flat water. Sea Trial is in two weeks and it will be up in Alaska by the end of the month.

I’ll be in Woodinville this weekend looking at a boat. Is there anything distillery only to make it worth stopping in?

I think most of us “letting stuff sit in the shelf” enjoy the collecting and curating along with the drinking. I have in excess of a hundred open and will let anybody who’s at my house try anything they want even if I know damn well they don’t know what Stitzel-Weller is or could tell the difference between pre and post fire Heaven Hill. Most people usually end up taking pictures of my wall and texting them to friends instead of drinking anyway.

8 yr MGP rye goes hard. So much rye spice, dry oak and heat. It’s like this summer in a bottle if this summer had a great mouth feel and long, sweet finish.

Most of the special editions aren’t better than Maker’s 101. None of it rises to any level of greatness.

The ABIA Thread of Gross Incompetence
We landed tonight a little before midnight and the baggage claim was a shit show. 1 is closed with temp barriers around it and a skinny one bag wide tunnel to the escalator up, 2-3 a teaming mass of humanity and 4-6 all partially blocked by some construction consisting of one dude running an angle grinder. The middle escalator was closed and it was generally the most third world baggage claim experience since the last time I flew out of an actual third world country. Austin makes the shabby airports in Mexico look great these days.

The ABIA Thread of Gross Incompetence
Flew out last Friday afternoon and it was a ghost town, but so was SEA. When the meltdowns come they’re horrendous, but it does seem a little better overall lately.

I was confused by the negative reviews on this one, I really like it. I feel like if it was released today it would be much higher on the secondary and better reviewed seeing how popular the finished segment has become. They also put it out at the gift shop all the time, apparently when it wasn’t well received they held a bunch back.

$35 over MSRP, but I’m in Alaska where the high was 53* and caught a king salmon today so who am I to complain?

Which cruise lines are trashiest?
We did a Carnival out of Galveston in like 2010 and it was certainly trashy. But they had a guy playing country and a floor for two stepping in the bar so we made the most of it. My favorite part was watching a lady (who weighed more than my wife and I combined) bring a plate heaped to capacity with fried chicken and eat it by the pool while watching the pool shenanigans. It was an amazing performance and the bone pile looked like a family of four had eaten dinner but this was about 10:30 am.

I need to try that KoK. That and a purple top that isn’t Willett’s distillate are about the only things that I haven’t been able to try.

Probably not wrong. Birthday Bourbon struggles so hard in a blind test. You really have to like the idea of it to make it work out. The crazy low bottle counts are the only thing propping the secondary prices up.

2023 Summer vacation brag thread
Heading up to our place in Alaska for 9 days in June and 14 days in August with a three night trip to Auberge Etereo in Riveria Maya in mid July.

This rye is good, but not $180-$190 good. It’s pretty classic MGP with more oak dryness than average from the age, but feels very muted because of the low proof. It reminds me of the Bulleit 10 yr where they seem to be aiming for an older high rye bourbon profile instead of embracing the herbal notes of the rye. I’m not quite at regret, but I wouldn’t grab another one.

Picked up these today. Stagg is probably just going in the Stagg closet but I’ll crack the rye at the lake for after sunset sipping over the weekend. It’s sadly low proof but it’s the oldest MGP rye I own.

Moist Marzipan? Get out of here with that nonsense.

The Boat Fanatic Thread
I think most of those boats come with a $50k-$100k electronics package as a part of the base dealer build because there’s a lot of profit in that kind of equipment. Since the massive boats on Travis are mainly intended for nearshore saltwater or much larger lakes it makes sense that they’d be fairly well equipped for low/no visibility navigation As a side note, I redid the electronics in my 26’ up in Alaska with a couple 10” screens, new enclosed array radar, chartplotter with AIS and 1kw sonar and feel pretty comfortable running 20 knots in fog where there’s no point even looking out the pilothouse windows. I love the tech and would understand having it on larger boat regardless of what body of what it’s on. But the open array radar spinning on a bright sunny day on Travis is pretty ridiculous

Correct. I thought we were just here to post unicorns and share a few random cheap bottles that don’t suck.

Absolutely not at that price. Boutiquey bottled a couple different HH corn whiskeys with age statements that routinely go for $100 or less or you could get a 40+ year Chronicles Canadian corn whiskey off the shelf for Rebecca Creek 16 money if you want to try some old corn whiskey. - Bourbon
