  1. I did last year on the way to Colorado last summer. Absolutely beautiful water and cold (62 degrees). I went at 6 am (7 am Texas time) to beat the scuba traffic. I only lasted two minutes in water before having to get out. Worked my way to staying in for 15 minutes before needing to get out and then would get back in. Called them this year and they said no out of state visitors and they were booked up with scuba reservations through October. Could have probably done the 6 am visit again, but decided to go another way thru NM. Swam in Roaring Fork River in Colorado for the two weeks I was there, but waited til afternoon for the sun to warm up the water a little. Also swam in some of the gap lakes. Unfortunately, that area of Colorado just had devastating fires. Isn't Balmorhea still closed? We used to stop every time when driving west. I try to swim in natural water daily and living close to the San Marcos and Comal Rivers with constant temps makes that possible in normal times. When they opened state parks in the spring, we went to Lost Maples and did a creek walk along the Sabinal and found some nice spots to swim, but that's too far for a regular excursion. Under normal circumstances, we'd do a day trip and go to Wes Cooksey park to swim in the Nueces and to Fort Clark Springs in Bracketville for some good swimming spots. I have done the slime bridge on Blanco and Kendall County parks for the Guadalupe. But the water is so warm that it's just not an enjoyable swim. Have been going to Landa Pool regularly, but that ends on Labor Day. The March shutdown was much better as there were no fences limiting access and I would just go at 6 am to get in.

  3. And then there is The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Not a good suggestion for family night. Saw Greta Gerwig's Little Women for family night. This is the first Little Women version that I watched all the way through. Best parts of the evening were exclamations of hey, it's the guy from Matewan. He's been in a thousand things since Matewan, but he'll always be the from Matewan. Aand then someone interjected Better Call Saul when the father showed up. It was entertaining fare--Saorise Ronan (sp) is always good in the movies I've seen, albeit that's Gerwig's prior movie and was it, Brooklyn. Bullitt - Steve McQueen is Mr. Cool in this pic. Amazed that Peter Yates is the director. Better chase: Mustang v. Charger or ten speed v. Cinzano Semi? Lovely shots of SF and a few nice McQueen moments, but I prefer other McQueen movies like The Getaway and his ensemble movies.
  4. Valley Girl - original. Holds up ok as an 80's teen-com with Plimsouls and Frederick Forrest making it rise above the middling fare.
  5. All four seasons of Fresh Meat are available. Comfort food, but comfort food that makes one laugh. Six main characters awkwardly fuck and fuck up at a uni house in Manchester.

    GLORIA

Ill take Sherlock Pub in Sharpstown Mall 2 piece band that played Gloria 10 straight times to close out the night.
  7. Saw Across the Pacific with Huston initially directing until drafted to make war films and starring Bogart, Astor and Greenstreet. In between Maltese Falcon and Casablanca. Good action and acting.
  8. The Swimmer. Based on John Cheever story and starring Burt Lancaster. Studio very unhappy with result and hired Sydney Pollack to direct some changes and made Lancaster pay for last day of shooting. Read the story when I was young and would like to read now at my advanced age, but no longer have the book. I swim everyday and so my interest was to see if there was any like-mindedness. Lancaster picks his route across upper class suburbia and swims his way uninvited in neighbors pools with mixed reaction. It would be a better movie without the studio additions, but the movie that stuck with me. I share very little with the main character, although my ex-wife may find a few resemblances. Burt and I do share the absolute joy of diving in water. He in pools and me in the river.
  9. Hell yeah. Made me laugh after my divorce. BBC's Tinker Tailor and Smiley's People with John Gielgud are excellent. Available on regular youtube. And Fleabag had best answer for favorite period piece...Carrie.
  10. Curious to what your reaction was to Iannucci's other film "In the Loop" In the Loop was an instant comedy classic.
  11. Double feature on TCM: Dodsworth: Have you thought how little happiness there can be for the old wife of a young husband? Kurt! Your mother's leaving. Philadelphia Society: What most wives fail to realize is that their husbands philandering has nothing whatever to do with them. Then what has it to do with? A reluctance to grow old, I think.
  12. mmm...Marion Davies.

  14. ESPN's updated too early Top 25 now has 5 B-12 teams. BU-3, KU-6, TT-9, WV-17 and UT-20. UH is 19. Hopefully there will be a season. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/29194264/gonzaga-new-no-1-college-basketball-way-too-early-top-25-2020-21
  15. And when I heard that voice, I immediately thought of 16 Candles.
  16. Brewster McCloud - a WTF movie, but it's Altman and set in Houston. Hudson & Harrigan anyone. The Strange Love of Margaret Ivers - Kurt Douglas was a riot.
  17. The Wire is full of gems.
  18. Not by the Guardian. They have it ranked in arthouse films. https://www.theguardian.com/film/series/the-drama-and-art-film-25?page=2
  19. It might be even lower than that, since the movie, Point Blank was ranked No. 17.
  20. Saw Badlands over the weekend. Surprised to see that it was ranked as #4 on Guardian's List of Best Crime Films. Seen most of these and not a bad list. 路 Chinatown: the best crime film of all time 路 Touch of Evil: No 2 best crime film of all time 路 Vertigo: No 3 best crime film of all time 路 Badlands: No 4 best crime film of all time 路 Rashomon: No 5 best crime film of all time 路 Double Indemnity: No 6 best crime film of all time 路 Get Carter: No 7 best crime film of all time 路 Pulp Fiction: No 8 best crime film of all time 路 Hidden: No 9 best crime film of all time 路 Goodfellas: No 10 best crime film of all time 路 Bonnie and Clyde: No 11 best crime film of all time 路 The Conversation: No 12 best crime film of all time 路 The Killing: No 13 best crime film of all time 路 The French Connection: No 14 best crime film of all time 路 The Big Sleep: No 15 best crime film of all time 路 La C茅r茅monie: No 16 best crime film of all time 路 Point Blank: No 17 best crime film of all time 路 Hard Boiled: No 18 best crime film of all time 路 A Prophet: No 19 best crime film of all time 路 The Long Good Friday: No 20 best crime film of all time 路 Scarface: No 21 best crime film of all time 路 Heat: No 22 best crime film of all time 路 The Postman Always Rings Twice: No 23 best crime film of all time 路 Miller's Crossing: No 24 best crime film of all time 路 Daybreak: No 25 best crime film of all time
  21. Have they hired a new defensive coach?
  22. Simple process in watching an old or foreign movie, if you like it, then follow the director, star or something inspiring from the film. Watching Blazing Saddles gets you Treasure of the Sierra Madre or gets you Blue Collar. And from there you check out other John Huston, Bogart or Walter Huston movies or you get Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel and the great Yaphet Kotto in a Paul Schrader film. Blazing Saddles also takes you in a straight line to Brooks and Wilder films.
  23. Burning. Shit going down in South Korea.
