  1. Ideally, it wouldn't matter what the magazine capacity is for semi-auto rifles if they are all removed from the population, except for those permitted to manage wildlife in certain rare circumstances. For recreational hunters and their permitted/registered bolt-action rifles, the mag size would be less relevant due to the low rate of fire. I realize this would all be a big change for a lot of folks and many sportos would left out and thus furious. Sometimes big things have to happen in order to solve our big problems. If we are ever going to provide healthcare for all of our citizens, big changes are going to need to occur. Solving homelessness will also require bold action. The AWB's problem was it was too narrow - it didn't apply to all semi-auto rifles and didn't have a need-based permit system. It catered to folks that wanted to make the requirements overly complicated, less effective, and watered down. Even so, the AWB is believed to have had a positive influence on mass-shootings during the time it was in affect.
  2. Semi-auto rifles provide no benefit to society except in certain limited wildlife management settings. The obvious route is to implement a buy-back program and needs-based permitting system (i.e., a trained professional wildlife technician permitted to manage populations). Other long guns and hand guns could have their own tiered needs-based permits. Australia did it and it worked. It would also all require a licensing, training, background check, and registration system. It isn't rocket science. The only difficulty is that people have tied their identity to firearms, a political party uses those people, and those people have been programmed to fear (both scary government takeover of freedom eagles and rabid horde caravan of illegal migrant crack-induced pedophile rapists).
  3. I don't give a fuck about the slippery slope argument. Society heavily regulates all kinds of things - explosives, vehicles, chemicals, etc. - to minimize harm. The people who need those potentially dangerous things still have access to them. It shouldn't be a big deal to heavily regulate semi-auto firearms, except many have entangled their identity to them and a political party shamefully decided to take advantage. The US is in an overall very sad and irresponsible place. I don't have a lot a sympathy for the stance that firearms confer benefit to a household considering they have been shown to increase suicide rates and homicide rates related to domestic violence. However, introducing licensing, registration, training and safety requirements may change that. Plus there isn't a need for semi-auto rifles for home defense (unless an identity formed watching Rambo or irresponsible media consumption allows someone to live in fear). The only need for those type of firearms are in certain limited wildlife management settings (i.e., needs-based permit system).
  4. How is it a problem with a two-party system when only one of those parties is broken? How exactly would a third party change that? Maybe Ralph Nader can save us? Or maybe if Bernie was the head of a third party, Trump would somehow not have won Florida? The problem is the propoganda arms of the right with their weaponized misinformation and large swath's of the US unable to protect themselves against that propoganda. The problem is the senate and EC's excessive weight to low-population, far-right states. Those problems can minimized (PR/DC statehood and regulate facebook, etc.) but it would take Dem control in the Senate.
  5. Meh. We have rules that address divesting and financial entanglements for certain government employees. Those rules don't normally extend to children since there is an expectation that children should be able to lead their own life. There are rules that act as guardrails against nepotism, against self-dealing between family members, and ensure disclosures when potential conflicts exists. There is zero evidence any of these guardrails or rules were crossed. That should be the end of discussion - but because of right-wing propaganda - folks but into the "controversy." If folks want to expand our current system and increase prohibited activities when it comes to children, that is fair and there is a rule making process to make those kinds of things possible. However, pushing manufactured right-wing propaganda isn't the way.
  6. Hey man. Have you ever considered whether you might be in a information bubble? Everyone is in one. The trick is to understand that and make a deliberate attempt to diversify the sources. Plus, brush up on the basics of journalism. Journalists shouldn't run with stories that aren't vetted. Plus note the difference between editorial and news and how many sources (most notable Fox) blends the two together. PBS newshour is an easy way to add is expand your bubble. https://www.youtube.com/user/PBSNewsHour
  7. Like everyone else, Rudy has to lay down on a bed when he "tucks in his shirt" while in the presence of a young woman
  8. I get that it is easier to maintain peace and moderate, keep threads on topic, and accommodate a broader user base, but how does maintaining a safe space eliminate gaslighting and allow folks to be honest? Doesn’t the opposite actually happen? If someone is logically or ethically weak in their political and cultural ideas, wouldn’t it be better promote honesty for them to see those ideas broken down and challenged?
  9. Just an observation but if these are your actual concerns with the Democratic Party, it is rather apparent you have been captured by right-wing culture war propaganda. My recommendation is to reflect on your information bubble and takes steps to diversify the sources of information you expose yourself to while increasing your general understanding of media. In this day and age with social media, it is important to take a deliberate and focused look at this in order to be an informed voter. Being an informed voter is your duty as a citizen. If you conclude you aren’t an informed voter, you should abstain from this election. Some easy steps: Delete your Facebook and twitter accounts. I also recommend you brush up on the basics of journalism, like the difference between news and editorials and how many sources blur those two together. Make an effort to understand how algorithms push consumers down rabbit holes on certain sites (e.g., YouTube.). Finally, fold in some easy nonbiased sources, like PBS’ Newshour, which is 50 minutes a day and available for free to stream.
  10. Are folks afraid that a Biden admin will go to war because of the Lincoln Project? Are they on the short list for Secretary of State? Are people contemplating whether to have them babysit their new infant?
  11. Folks aren’t too concerned about undecideds. There aren’t many. The game is about motivating turnout for your side and suppressing turnout for the other. If you are on team Biden this election, then consider not sharing the opinion that he sucks or is a bad candidate - when the opposite is true
  12. The dude is up by 10 points nationally. Define “good.” Like what? I’m afraid you may have missed out on the last two decades of US politics. Are you aware of Mitch McConnell, and do you understand the role he plays in US politics? I feel like someone should make an easy to digest video about how a bill becomes law. He is clearly the best for the US right now. Name a single person better.
  13. I see you are sad that both sides aren't being treated the same. Are you under the impression that one side is a victim? Do things just not seem fair?
  14. I’ll let you in on a little secret. The trumpists who manufacture and promote the Hunter stuff aren’t doing it so that educated or informed voters will think Biden is corrupt. They are putting it out there as a slight-of-hand, so that the uneducated, low-info voters are able to be okay with (look past) Trump’s cronyism, nepotism, selfdealing that he is doing our in the open. You are audience of that propaganda.
  15. Is it just me or do other people sometimes feel embarrassed for someone when they share a really terrible take?
  16. Like clockwork, hunter and Burisma are at the top of the Fox News website. There are newly uncovered emails!!
  17. The lack of climate change action is due to Mcconnell in the US Senate. If the Senate takes passes climate change legislation (cap and trade), Biden will sign it.
  18. These guys are top notch criminals. Using a sophisticated system with the Alfa bank server to transfer data and then cover it up is grade A stuff. A much lesser criminal organization would of done something dumb like simply have the campaign manger at the time, let’s pretend his name is Maul Panafort, email data directly to some Russian associate. You can send almost anything by email these days, like even internal campaign polling data. It’s a shame these criminals were so sophisticated and have totally gotten away with it
  19. “Covid-19 has created a crisis throughout the world. This crisis has produced a test of leadership. With no good options to combat a novel pathogen, countries were forced to make hard choices about how to respond. Here in the United States, our leaders have failed that test. They have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy. The magnitude of this failure is astonishing. According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering,1 the United States leads the world in Covid-19 cases and in deaths due to the disease, far exceeding the numbers in much larger countries, such as China. The death rate in this country is more than double that of Canada, exceeds that of Japan, a country with a vulnerable and elderly population, by a factor of almost 50, and even dwarfs the rates in lower-middle-income countries, such as Vietnam, by a factor of almost 2000. Covid-19 is an overwhelming challenge, and many factors contribute to its severity. But the one we can control is how we behave. And in the United States we have consistently behaved poorly.” - NEJM
  20. I get that the trumpkins and the both-sides boys are anxiously scraping the barrel, and you guys want this stuff to be relevant. But let me know if any of these mind blowing revelations change what we know about: - trump asking Russia for assistance. - trump’s son and campaign chairman meeting with Russian attorneys to get dirt on Hillary. - Russia running a hacking and dumping operation to get trump elected. Whatabout her emails!!! - trump and his advisor working with Wikileaks to coordinate timing of Russian hacked materials. - Russia running a social media campaign to get trump elected. - trump’s campaign manager providing internal polling data to Russian cutouts. - trump obstructing the investigation into Russian election interference including firing the director of the fbi because of that “Russia thing.” - trump and the GOP refusing to pass legislation to help protect our elections from foreign interference. - trump using national security funds as leverage to get foreign allies to attack his campaign rival. - Russia is currently meddling in the 2020 election to elect trump.
  21. Somebody should tell the African casket dancing dudes to stand down and stand by
  22. It’s the media’s fault that I have minimal capacity to consume trusted information!!?!
