Anyone watch “Alone” on Netflix? I like it better than naked and afraid because it’s not just watching people starve for 21 days. They’re actually surviving. Seems like their snares and traps actually work on Alone

This is a fun show. Hope they get the other seasons on Netflix soon.

I live in South Korea right now.  People don't fear the police here. The police don't fear the populace. The crime rate is extremely low.  If you own guns, the police keep them and you come check them out to go hunting, target shooting, etc. then check them back in.  Most police don't carry firearms here, even in riot/protest situations. An exception to this is that airports always have armed officers with automatic weapons.  Police talk first and use force later. Police are focused on criminal matters and settling citizen disputes. Most traffic enforcement is automated. Rather than having a large central station they sprinkle many smaller stations around the community so it easier for the community to come to them and faster for them to get where they are needed.  The police force is very small compared to the U.S.A.

I have only directly interacted with police once here. A neighbor was beating his girlfriend and would not stop, even when the building manager and my Korean neighbors asked him to stop and told him the police were on the way. Listening to the guy beat his girlfriend was pretty infuriating so I asked the manager to open the door for me, which he did (most locks are key coded and managers have a universal pass key), and I went in and stopped it by getting between them and not allowing him to hit her. Five to ten minutes later the police came and took them both away.  Afterwards one of my neighbors told me I almost got arrested because the police assumed I was the boyfriend since the victim would not leave my side and was holding onto my arm and would not let go since she was so scared of her boyfriend assaulting her again. Also, probably because as a foreigner here you are always going to be assumed to be the problem unless a Korean witness lays out why you are not since the Korean crime rate is so low and the hermit kingdom (foreigners bad) still lingers among some here.  Luckily, the police asked my Korean neighbors what the situation was before they just slapped the cuffs on me. Sadly, I heard nothing happened to the guy, which is not uncommon here as domestic violence is seen as a private matter often times, rather than legal. I ran into the abused girlfriend randomly when out shopping, with my wife, and she thanked me profusely and her coworkers thanked me as well so it must have been an issue for awhile if they knew about it.

I really like living here when it comes to crime and the police. My biggest issues are some of the laws here are really messed up, but many of those are likely to be changed in the near future as the older generation dies off as they are mostly related to face and face saving.

Yup I know from some of your other posts. I lived there for 5 years and didn't have a single interaction with a cop(lived in gangnam at the time). It actually felt like they there to help/protect(outside of the DWI stops hey had in the busier areas). Almost every foreigner I ever met there always said they felt very safe there in regards to crime/theft. I never really had to deal with the foreigner stigma since I'm ethically Korean. But I think that's changing as well since so many foreigners are going there to live/study/work/marry.  I tripped out a few times when I went to the winter olympics in Pyeongchang and would meet white foreigners whose Korean was better than their English.

Agree with everything you said. The one part of Korean society I don't really like is how money is basically the cure all to most crimes but I guess it's the same here - just paid to lawyers.

My brother got an associate's degree in criminal justice, including tons of ride alongs,  in the mid 90's and then did not apply anywhere to be a cop. I asked him why. He said, "I wanted to become a cop to help people. That is not what cops do any more."

He said he had a class where the instructor said you have to be a total dumb ass to get in legal trouble as a cop, but if you do this is how to get out of it, and spent the entire class going through the greatest hits, you hear all the time from cops when incidents occur that get publicity, on how to muddy the waters so you were unlikely to get in lasting trouble.

Guessing you don't feel any fear of seeing cops where you are right now.

The only thing I've ever likes there is the fried pickle spears. Those are far superior to the pickle chips.

The last 4-5 times I've had to go there because the group I'm with wanted it I got a basket of pickle spears and some blue moon. Their chicken and sauces suck.

Also, about 3-4 years ago they had a promotion for a while where on every full moon night the large mugs of blue moon were $4. That got me there at the bar during a game a few times.

Used to go to the original location all the time when I was in school. Loved the fried pickles and fries. Never got the hype about the wings. There's so many places that do it better. Once you've had KFC(korean fried chicken) it's pretty hard to eat anything else.

I’m gonna guess “Proshares” is going to be looking for a senior marketing director very soon.

Guy just threw away a (mid?) six figure job I’m guessing.

One of his old tweets had a picture of some cycling shoes which match the exact ones in the video. Couple that with deleting years worth of tweets including a bunch of right wing political stuff and GPS tracking. Gonna go out on a limb and say he's probably that asshole. A

Also, saw some other pics outside of his profile. It's him.

I guess I need to take my lumps. Could be this guy too. Former cop.

Kinda looks like him. I’m sure he’s got pics of his road bike on his Instagram which will look curiously like the one in the video.

It's too early to tell for Bangkok/Thailand, but is not optimistic.

They've effectively kept borders closed to arrivals for nearing 2 months and just extended the closure for another month (through June). They're letting limited repatriation flights come in, they're also now setting up some hotels to be quarantine hotels in prep for letting some foreigners enter, but these are likely to be people with work permits or permanent residency. Everyone who enters has a mandatory 14day quarantine. There is also talk about the local CDC coordinating with certain countries that have good control of Covid to set up travel agreements to allow people from those countries expedited entry. Given the current situation, it's very unlikely the US makes that list.

Hoping things will be under control enough to lift the 2 week quarantine by late fourth quarter. Was planning to spend another 2-3 months traveling around Asia playing golf and visiting friends in Korea/Thailand.

That’s fair. I just wish I had a better option than Biden. I’m going to vote for him but he certainly doesn’t make me super excited.

I think it's safe to say most of us are in the same boat. But when you've been eating shit for 3 years a stale piece of bread looks like manna from heaven.

The death spiral is right. Democrats in these cities have done jack shit to curtail police abuse of minorities. LA, SF, ABQ, Philly, Minneapolis and a ton more large cities are full blown Democrat top to bottom. Those cities are as shitty to minorities as Salt Lake City, Phoenix/Scottsdale. They just go out every couple of years to make it seem like they actually give a shit about African Americans. The entire system is fucked up. Our federal government is a shit show on both sides of the aisle and nothing Biden does will improve it. The only benefit Biden gives you is that:

    A) he is not Trump

    B) when he dies two years in to office he gives way to a younger, (hopefully diverse) female VP to be president

    I only need A.

Yeah, the fuck is that supposed to mean?

The best defense they have are "he was gonna die eventually of heart disease anyway amirite?"

Hmmm...this sounds very familiar to another thread in DT.

As a Mayonnaise American who lives in a the wealthy part of Prince George’s County, MD, I also see it, in so much as the traditional infrastructure will allow it.

I think this is changing in the Asian demographic at least in my social circle. Growing up most of us did fit into that model minority/keep your head down and work hard stereotype but the last few years woke most of us up. The two Trump voters I know of haven't said a word about politics in years and we look at them like dumbasses whenever the subject gets brought up.

Ok- so I’m a big chicken about winding roads up in the mountains. Every time I go to Colorado in a normal car I freak the fuck out going to breckenridge and say never again. Is the a flat road through the Rockies well to the north?  I don’t want to drive a 33 foot rig thru switchbacks at 8 MPH with cars stacked up a mile deep.

Was just gonna ask if you were skipping Colorado for a reason. Either way, trip sounds awesome and your kids may remember 2020 for the rest of their lives for something other than COVID.

Seriously. Jesus Christ. Golf is probably the one thing he has actually put work into and that ugly ass swing is the result? No wonder he needs the foot wedge.
