What would it take for Rodney Terry to earn the job?
horn4life replied to HookEm's topic in Basketball
I am curious why you believe this to be the case? Or are you saying suck next year, and hope for the year after that? Not trying to pick a fight, just I don't think we have the basketball school reputation to recruits to make this a certainty? The fact that when he has a good product to sell he has been integral in bringing in some of the best talent we have had on the 40 acres. Like I asked SL Express above, I simply do not understand the confidence that firing Terry will result in a "don't worry we will be just fine." Texas Basketball hasn't been that good the last 10 years. So that's not where my automatic thoughts go. I think he might do pretty well selling the program to recruits, as well as retain the kids already in the fold. IF he's gone, I think a lot of kids and future recruits will view it as a betrayal. Not saying that is reality, but that might be the perception. The only certainty at Texas ,is the absolute certainty that there will be a "Fire ________!" Thread the day a "permanent" hire is made. Fuck I hope Terry and Company win the whole Damn thing, so we can all stand around and backslap each other on what a fantastic hire we have made! -
Well today is multiple plans - but I will give a tip of a hat to what I know will be a great show. An early 3:30 show at Continental Club with Carolyn Wonderland and Shelley King, cover's $10 but worth it, they put on a very, very good show. If you don't have to work, that's one I might circle. We had planned to do to C-Boy for Louisiana Lafayette's party with crawfish, but there are a shit ton of RSVP's so we may do something different, as I doubt we can get loose before 4 or 5 today. I also have become a big fan of the Hotel Vegas. The indoor/outdoor stages were great, and they even had a decent hamburger though $14. I think it's one of the best SXSW venues offering up as much or more music that anybody. Best thing about today is if you get in before 5 pm you get in for Free. You have to wade through some of the not so good (or genre you don't prefer) to get to the bands you want. In fact probably if I was a late nighter I would be camped out here today. To see the Osees, and Austin's breakout "boy band with tits" Die Spitz (jimmy jazz's daughters group). But probably too late for me this early in the week. Shooks in the day, might be a winner too. Anyhow get out there and have some fun... "kids!"

What would it take for Rodney Terry to earn the job?

Basically as I said in the recruiting thread, we are at a tipping point where getting rid of Terry may provide more negatives in the eyes of recruits about Texas, than the positive aspects of a big name hiring splash. As quite frankly I think the team thinks it's Terry's team. I also think that success breeds 1000 fathers, failure none. We could have gone right down the rat hole. Scratching by fucking Rice, barely getting by OU who is not even in the NCAAs, and then getting fucking hammered by K-State...it could have gone bad. And I think that is underestimated, by most folks. But I bet it's not what any of the players on our team think. Anyhow voted for sweet 16. Simply as in my mind it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process. If Terry sucks in year two it's not like we can't give him with a big buyout and try to make that coaching splash. IF he shits the bed vs Colgate, I think it opens the door a lot more to an exit. I also think that no matter what happens there are gonna be a lot of folks on the other side. I was honestly surprised that so many thought a 16 or 8 finish was necessary. Simply as we haven't had many of those. I will say that if he gets two wins and we fire Terry, I can't honestly think of a hire big enough to offset the negative perceptions of canning him. So damed if we do, damned if we don't to some degree. IMHO flame away -
The secret is you have to go back 3 blocks off congress for street parking. You might get lucky with some Congress avenue parking, but i just usually go for the third block back.

Wife got done a hair early, and we got the wild hair and went down to Hotel Vegas, to see Iguana Death Cult after checking out some of their music. They were great. Sort of funny for me to see today's mosh pit closing out Rickshaw Willies Burger Patrol. I grew up seeing folks fall out and taking a boot to the face in Houston, so it was sort of interesting to see this help the other guy up mosh pit. A lot better to have it all be in good fun, that's for sure.It was funny because I don't think my wife had ever seen a mosh pit, and was worried Iguana Death Cult was gonna be a rehash of the pit. Iguana Death Cult was some band from the Netherlands I think and I really enjoyed them. Reminded me a fair amount of The Clash so many years ago when they first came though town. Good lead singer/ guitar player with killer energy. Glad we got the wild hair and went on down. Now likely SoCo Tomorrow, or maybe boomerang back to Hotel Vegas. Good to take advantage of the nice weather.

2023 Houston Texans Offseason - A Huge #2
horn4life replied to The Earl of Texas's topic in Football
The only question the Texans need to ask regarding a QB pick... Are you fucking smart enough not to do really, really, really stupid shit off the field that will fuck the organization needlessly in the Ass? Then you pray like hell they don't ponder for a second... -
That was the second game of Big 12 play after an absolute nail biter vs OU to win by one. I think a LOT of folks forget those two games starting off Big 12 play. We could have been not very good, and a lot of folks were nervous back then. There was still uncertainty about Beard's fate at that point, and the team was not exactly clicking on all cylinders. Beard was dismissed two days later, and the team was fully Terry's without question for the players from that point on.

Yeah Hotel Vegas/ Volstead is one area that has really gone wild as SXSW. Usually I just drive to wherever I am going but, Hotel Vegas is also right next to the Train. But I never have ridden the train. Might be the best way in and out should I decide to head down on the weekend. They have shit going today as well. A Giant Dog is good and i've hear good things about Pleasure Venom. One day I have to see Pelvis Wrestley just for the creative band name. and Iguana Death Cult has good name and good sound. But alas probably too busy today... but gonna do that train research

My Nephew is getting married next year, and the wedding in on the 4th of July weekend. I am assuming that plan tickets around the 4th are gonna be expensive and was thinking of perhaps making a longer trip and maybe going to DC for a couple days to see museums, Smithsonian and what not. Or maybe do stuff around Philly? I just want to do more than go to the wedding and back if I am dropping $800+ per round trip. Now maybe I can get cheaper flights by booking early, but looking at nearly any July weekend travel to Philly was around $400 each way. Now maybe I should just go out and back, but seems like I might take advantage of being in the NE and go to Washington DC? Or do I go on a Philly food expedition for a few days and call it a weekend? At least it's a normal Saturday wedding, rather than some Friday night or Sunday bullshit. I don't know where in Philly the wedding is yet, but the wife has never been to DC and I thought it would be cool to do a few days of National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, etc. Not sure if there are any cost savings flying into Baltimore/Washington, or not. I thought about a trip to NYC, but seems like DC might be a better option. Anyhow tell me what you would do. We are trying to decide whether or not just to take a week off and go see a bunch of stuff before the wedding. I am open to ANYTHING or ANYWHERE near Philly, as long as I can make the Wedding.

Figured somebody here might know. I see them every year, but the sheer numbers are overwhelming this year. I am wondering why there are simply so many this year. Damn things keep getting into the house when we open the doors. I know that this "plague" will pass due to short lifespan. But curious about why so many this year?

Side note: ALWAYS take a picture of your license! Simply because if you lose your license and do not have a picture of it... you gotta find your passport, birth certificate, pound of flesh etc. Whereas if you have a picture of you license you can go to the DPS website and enter that long audit number at the bottom of your license. And in less than a week you will receive you new license in the mail. The real problems with not having an ID? Try to get money sent to you after having your wallet stolen! It's damn near impossible unless there is a branch of your bank that allow you to withdraw off your fingerprint or other biometric Identification. It took me talking to the VP of my bank and having a faxed letter to a bank in Corpus just to get $150 of my own money to get enough gas back to Austin. It was actually sort of crazy, and I can only imagine what would happen to somebody without resources who lost their license and needed money. Fucking crazy. Whenever, I read these stories it reminded me of how easy the state of Texas has made getting an official ID in Texas... to help with voter ID requirements. 😉

This is exactly where I see the potential for problems where the negatives may outweigh the name hire "splash." Everyone knows that in todays recruiting the coaches recruit like hell, but so do the players. Transfer portal makes this a lot more dangerous than it used to be. Would we keep what we have and add to it in the portal? Or lose the future players we have developed this year and easily replace any losses with the new big name coach? Something in between? It is an interesting dilemma to be sure. But I think a lot of folks discount the fact that this team could be in a complete rebuild if the players don't buy into the, "Yeah Coach Terry kicked ass, but you know Chris Beard was actually responsible for this teams victories." The mantra of a lot of a lot of folks which I understand. I personally simply just don't think you will find many of the actual players on our team agreeing with that premise. An that to me is the fly in the ointment.

We are now in the territory of losing as much as we might gain by getting rid of Terry. Of course Terry could win the Big 12 Championship last night, and shit the bed in game 1 of the NCAA's but that is probably not the most likely scenario at this point. Had Shaka Smart won two or three games in the NCAA's would he still be our head coach? Only a first round loss makes the decision easier to replace Terry. I agree that Beard was the man who put all the parts into place, then created the fucking chaos that could have EASILY allowed for this team to implode and shit the bed this season. The Big 12 is without a doubt the toughest conference in the country, and we have seen more and more contributors as the season has rolled on. At this point in time I think that we are right at the tipping point, where firing Terry would have more of a negative that might overwhelm any positive of a splashy hire? If Terry wins three games I think we would be fucking stupid to fire him. Others will differ. It's not like the old days where the new coach can come in knowing that there is at least a solid core group of players to build upon. The transfer portal could remove a lot of the talent extremely quickly. While basketball is a business to a lot of the players I think it foolish to discount the emotional ties that a coach builds and profits from in truly creating a team. I think that a lot of folks think you get the talent, you win the games. Sort of... The hard part is getting the very best players to think of the team first, rather than the potential of their personal highlight reel. It's harder than you think in most instances. Anyhow I think we are at that point where there is no clear good choice. Texas' desire to make a splash with a new hire is certainly understandable. But I think we are at the point now where if Terry wins a couple more games the negative perception for potential players may be as big as any splash. If you want Terry gone, his victory last night was disappointing. If you want Terry gone, each NCAA win makes your position less palatable. So if you want change you need to root for the Horns to dump the first or second game. The only certainty is that Texas is not a basketball school. It is a football school with a shit ton of other sports that compete for championships, while our football team does not. (Yet!) I think if given the opportunity after making a decent run in the tournament we shit can Terry, we start from scratch. Probably retain a couple players, and lose just as many to the portal. It's also possible that Terry might not be able to raid the portal in the same manner as Beard. But if Terry has a Big 12 tourney championship, and a sweet 16 appearance... you have more to lose than gain IMHO. I am looking at this mostly from the recruit perspective. Terry has something going here, and the team clearly loves him. A lot of times the new trophy wife is not embraced by the kids, no matter how famous or respected by everyone else. So I guess a lot of us are rooting for the team to win a few more games... and a lot of folks are rooting for an early exit making it easy to replace Terry. I don't honestly think you can with a straight face root for both.

City is a lot different than 3 years ago. Hell the skyline alone is different. To be honest this weekend to me is always like the "soft opening" for SXSW, next week it's on! I did really enjoy seeing The Heavy Heavy at C-boys. For the first time in a very, very long time we were at the front of the line. Helps when you are kicked out to clear the room for the next show and you simply decide to wait. I think this band is actually going somewhere. A little more mellow than my usual rock/blues based preferences, but good music and the Georgie has a gorgeous voice, with some serious range. I guess the main thing that makes me think these kids may be on the edge of greatness? IS that the kids fucking shut up and listened to the set. Usually they are too busy talking about bullshit to list to at least half the show. They are playing multiple shows around town including SXSJ on Wednesday. in fact they remind me a lot of the "drifty" music that has been a staple as SXSJ over the years for their day shows. I will also say that I was both surprised and impressed by the midnight act Wayne Baker Brooks. Good old school Chicago Blues. Even better Brooks' set began as sort of a "chicago blues history lesson" with his song selection. Apparently they only came in for this show specifically, but they are now on my list to watch out for in case they ever come back though. I need to get my plan of attack together for next week...

Nope. Simply as it's not that simple. To use your cake analogy- I think Beard got all the ingredients, the mixer on the counter, and preheated the oven... then he took a nap from which he would never awake. There a lot more left to do than icing. I also understand how folks can disagree with me. I simply know that team building is a lot more than simply getting talented players. In fact quite frankly, managing talented players, is a lot harder than most people think. Again I emphasize, that this could have been a complete cluster fuck, very, very, very easily. A little doubt and a little selfishness, and right down the rat hole you go. This honestly was the more likely scenario. But everyone is a father to success, so it appeared easy. Right now after Terry and company nothing the first Big 12 Championship, defeating the defending National Champion twice in a week in a humiliating manor. There's a lot more than simply an accumulation of talent here my friend. There is a real team, and not just the players, the team is both the coaches and the players. You can tell that his group loves each other and most importantly they have played with heart and UNSELFISHLY! Managing talent to be unselfish and put the team first is quite simply the hardest thing a coach which team. At this point I think there really is something to build on with Terry. I also understand how you can disagree with this assessment. But I think right now Terry is the heart and soul of this team. If you were a recruit, would you like to play for a guy who looked to be so loved by his players tonight at the close of the championship game? I would think so. I also now think that replacing Terry might have more of a negative than positive effect. I think you keep Terry and you build upon this success. Fire him and we are back to the chaos IMHO. flame away....

"Had" unfortunately being the operative word. The other thing that Beard was able to leverage was not only his great year at Tech, but the weight of the University of Texas name in the transfer portal. Terry has honestly done a great job. Beard put the pieces and staff into place. But let's also be honest in that these college teams don't run themselves, and not every coach can get the most out of his players. The potential for this season to become a complete shit show was right there, next to "inherited success." Like the USA today article said about us, we are fucked no matter what we do coaching. If Terry wins today notches a Big 12 Tournament Championship over a #1 NCAA seed to do it? Then makes a run in the NCAA's do you shit can the guy? For the hope of another guy coming in? The real problem is Terry can't sit in a kids living room, or talk to them as a transfer and assure them he will indeed be the head coach of UT next season. And that puts him at a disadvantage to his peers, as uncertainty is what folks are selling negatively on the Horns. The flip side is who do your hire to make a big enough splash and keep the team unified? The players seem to like Terry. With the ability to transfer now a staple of recruiting that could work against us if some of the kids love Terry and he gets canned. They could jump off as easily as they jumped on. I guess the best case scenario is Terry wins today and makes it to the final four (a dare not say the W word and jinx all hope). Then uses the talent and his record to get a couple of high profile recruits to give verbals immediately after his contract is formalized. The other "best" option is to have no decision at all and have our boys lose the next two games they play. To open the door for the "splash" hire. I personally would prefer to win another 3+ games. The fact that the team is doing well without Timmy Allen also says a bit about coaching IMHO. Anyhow such is the plight of Texas Basketball coaching decision making, no great moves... and that's Chris Beard's fault unfortunately.

First off the best place to handle a party of 11 is Kody's. Good quality level of food, and you order at counter so it's easy peasy dividing up the bill. Kids... you could get another couple drinks in by letting them play putt putt. Pro-hint- order the garlic fish. Every single one of your days is completely fucked up however! The first item on each day should read, woke up before dawn and wet my first line as the sun began to peek out of the darkness. Followed by pictures of sunrise and then fish pics. 😉 As stated La Playa is gonna be sort of a clusterfuck with 11. Volunteer to break the group into two tables to have a chance of getting a seat. And on day two you are NOT going to go to La Playa, and then catch the dolphin watch period. Simply not enough time. Honestly you will get to see porpoise on the ferry ride. You could also go out and see them ride and jump in the waves of most any of the large boats that come up the channel. And thats free! With your group you might also be able to get on the wait list for Virginias, remotely (another pro-tip) via yelp. Lelo's is also solid food, nest to La Playa, with a kids area. I would probably skip going to corpus at all, but if you are going to go you will likely NOT opt for the ferry. But the one way to have an absolute W on the board is to make damn sure you make sure to stop at Black Diamond Oyster Bar by the naval air station! I would do lunch on the way back. Pro-Tip- substitute salad with 1000 island for french fries. You also could consider going to Snoopy's on the bay, they have Scoopy's ice cream right there as well. This would also be a good place to accommodate your larger group with counter ordering. One thing that I always loved to do when the kids were in your age slot was go to Fisherman's Wharf and watch the catch being off loaded. Usually around 5 pm. If you are lucky one of the mulit-day tuna trips will come in and the kids can really see some stuff. While I am in a mental protest with the invader that is Grumbles, my buddy loves their pina colada as it has the punch of a good margarita so he says. It also would be a way to get a drink waiting for the party boats to come in. Another thing we used to do when the kids were younger was go walk the packery channel jetty. It's level, and has rails so relatively safe. But a near guarantee of seeing sea turtles, on any jetty walk. ---------------------------- Here is are my general thoughts. Get out to the beach as early as you can. That way you guys can have a decent time on the beach before the college kids get up and light their hair on fire again. Or you can slap on your mirror ray sunglasses, and watch the shit show, later explaining what beer bongs are to the kids. The other thing good about getting the kids out early on the beach is a strong chance that they (and drinking dad) may get an afternoon nap. For big groups like this we nearly always make some breakfast casserole that requires little morning prep, and reheats fantastically for later risers, and late night nibbles. I have never been during spring break, likely never will, nor memorial day, labor day, nor July 4th. Basically the earlier you get out and do shit the fewer a-holes you have to deal with. If you are on the beach at 10 am, you are likely gone by 1 or 2. Make sure at have some sort of shelter for sun protection if you are lucky. Going out to dinner with as large a group as you have may be the most stressful part of your trip in all honestly. Especially if you are trying to eat anytime after 5 pm, the crowds will be crazy.

OK Mofo's Im gonna fuck myself and help ya'll out. Next Tuesday, 5 pm at C-boys on SoCo. Music and complementary mudbugs while they last. In Katy last weekend visiting the kid at BB's Tex Orleans they were like $10.99, with a two pound minimum. I was a little shocked by the price, but the freeze makes sense.

I was turned onto the Viagra boys after hearing their song "Punk Rock Loser." Would love to see them live sometime! Going to go see "the Heavy Heavy" at C-boys this weekend, then it's no for SXSW!

What you will not see from McCarthy is ANY legislation... to fix the situation at the border. And WHY do you think that is? Because there is NO PLAN at all from the GOP to actual fix the border (or any other issue of significance). Because there isn't a bill that would that could pass the GOP controlled house that would do anything but lose votes nationally for the GOP. You see all the GOP "fixes" don't work, and they don't address the issues that need to be addressed. So while Greg Abbott is rolling around telling us how Biden is wholly at fault for anything at the border, electing Republicans into a majority means that this all important issue which is broadcast every 14 minutes, 24 hours a day on Fox News simply will not be addressed with any legislation. You will get the dog and pony show hearings, and stunts but what you will not see is legislation. Just like you will never see health care legislation from the GOP, because there are no solutions at all to big problems by today's GOP. The whining and lying will continue but you will never, ever, ever see any legislation produced by the GOP controlled house of representatives. In fact I would bet my 401K that you will never even see a bill on the border brought to the floor to be debated! The absolute definition of a do nothing congress.

Adams was quite simply an ass. And a greedy one. Sugar is just better than Vinegar, for example. Ahh... I loved the Oilers growing up in Houston. I forgot about it but this thread reminded me. My greatest fighting accomplishment (OK I was like 12) was winning a fight with two sons of an Oiler linemen. An older teenager Ricky Cluet? saved my ass. They were about to take me on two on one, and he stepped in to make it a fair fight, one at a time. I also remember some Neighbors one street over winning some playoff tickets to an Oiler game. Apparently the tickets were just to get them out of the house. With everyone tuned to the game, they backed in a truck and cleaned them out. But on the Bright side! When I came up to Texas my freshman year, I took pot luck just to meet different people. Little did I know I would room to nearly psychotic St. Marks kids from Dallas. They were getting the fucking Dallas Cowboy Weekly delivered. Thank the Lord for Earl Campbell helping kick Dallas's ass that Freshman year, With Staubach, Peason and Dorsett. Earl ripped off a couple big ones. Just went back and looked at the Box score. 30-27 Houston Earl had TD runs of 61 and 27 yards! God Bless Earl Campbell, for had Dallas won I would have had to listen to Dallas shit for weeks and weeks! rter Tm Detail HOU DAL 1 Cowboys Drew Pearson 56 yard pass from Roger Staubach (Rafael Septien kick) 0 7 Oilers Earl Campbell 61 yard rush (Toni Fritsch kick) 7 7 Cowboys Robert Newhouse 21 yard pass from Roger Staubach (Rafael Septien kick) 7 14 2 Oilers Toni Fritsch 27 yard field goal 10 14 Cowboys Tony Dorsett 1 yard rush (Rafael Septien kick) 10 21 Oilers Earl Campbell 27 yard rush (Toni Fritsch kick) 17 21 3 Oilers Mike Renfro 47 yard pass from Dan Pastorini 23 21 4 Cowboys Rafael Septien 44 yard field goal 23 24 Oilers Ken Burrough 32 yard pass from Dan Pastorini (Toni Fritsch kick) 30 24 Still Luv ya Blue!
