There is some sort of Brunch? Which could be full band(s) but not like the last few days. You might be able to get the kids into C-boys outside if you go early enough to an angle where they can see. Inside is 21+, but outside is all ages. You can drive by and see the outdoor stage from Congress. Sir Woman may pack the place, but I was hoping to see them and West Texas Exiles, but working on trying to convince my sidekick to join me. I am tempted to go way south to the Far Out Lounge to see Iguana Death Cult and Die Spitz, but think that's gonna be a bridge too far too late for me after this party week.

Texas Basketball Recruiting Notes: It's Miller Time
horn4life replied to texifornia's topic in 🤫$9.95🤫
HE needed to say there are GREAT coaches... that are interested. I was watching Musselman extolling how fantastic Arkansas' come from behind edging of Kansas. Then I thought about how much I questioned Kansas being a #1 after having Texas stop their dicks into the dirt twice in the prior week. And I did not see hiring Musselman as making a big enough splash to justify dumping Terry. I still feel that way.If they shit can Terry now the name better be bigger than ANY of the ones I have heard mentioned thus far... a LOT bigger. I think that once the permanence is established Terry will be able to bring in the quality of kids we need. Terry has been in on a lot of our biggest recruits over the years, and getting the kids here is a huge part of the coaches job. A lot of folks here think that simply getting the kids to sign and show up is more than half of coaching the team. basically I feel Terry has earned the job. And now I think perception negatives might way any potential positive of a splash hire to recruits. Musselman for example isn't a big enough splash IMHO. And I can't really put a name to who would be big enough that I think would say yes to our offer. My wild recruiting prediction? That Disu may return as unlikely as a lot of folks think that is. And that would be a coup to help firm up the foundation. But hell when you set the UT NCAA scoring record, set by Durant and Aldridge, there is likely a place in the NBA for you. So it's a long shot, but one I think possible unless we cut down the final nets. -
Says every 40 year old guy that wears a jersey with somebody else's name on it... Which... well... makes it not true.

Fun Fact that I just found out after many decades of fishing in Texas. It is FREE to fish in Texas State Parks! I nearly always have a current fishing license, but don't even not dip a line in the future for fear of not have a license!

Yeah really wish I had started the walk up to C-boys sooner. The billing of 10 guest singers doing "the Pretenders" sounded interesting, and like I said clearly everyone was having a great time on and off the stage! Trying to get some stuff done around the house and rally... but might be a struggle after the last week of fun.

Not a bad day... started off at C-boys with Shooks at 1 pm. But it was cold and early on St Patty's, hard for the band to get energy from the smaller crowd. But I totally reminded me of Charlie oh so long ago, and would love to see them with I imagine a night time throng of heart throb girls.. Moved down to Continental for Garrett T. Capps who was a fun funky band with cosmic cowboy look. Then Nik Parr and the Selfless Lovers. I had forgotten the wife and I had met the Guitar player before a year to more ago at T 22, and that guy was damn fine player and paired with the keyboard / sax player band leader. Then walked up to try to catch the last few songs by English Teeth and guest singers. Cam in for the last song and a half. Everyone was having a grand time from what I could tell from fans to the large ensemble of musicians onstage to close out the set. Wasn't sure what to do and they guys next to us said we should hang around for Low Cut Connie. When Steve the owner of C-boys introduced them as the worlds greatest rock and roll band I was definitely curious. They fucking kicked ass. They put fun rocking show, that was really, really fun to have witnessed. I can only imagine what a non-time restricted show might have been like. Sort of a working class rock and roll show if you EVER get a chance make the time to see them. Then walked back down to SXSJ and saw Thee Sacred Souls. Nice tight band with a song my wife realized was one she liked from Sun Radio. Nice groove and a super high register range for the lead singer. Was very close to staying a few more minutes to see Nude Party because I really like that "ride on" song they are getting some airplay on. But I gave the wife mercy and we headed home. I really do love this time of year to go see all the different styles of music. My top 3- #1 The Heavy Heavy at C-boys #2 Low Cut Connie at C- Boys #3 Iguana Death Cult at Hotel Vegas. sounds like a fitting mix of Austin music band names doesn't it!

I guess my only question is... where did you go poop? After Steak and Eggs with Spicy Salsa to load the cannon, and using a double Chili burger with jalapeños and onions with obligatory Dirty martin grease, to power the cannon load, there really should be a bathroom listed in that 7.5 hours. Unless you... packed it home. 😉

The only eternal truth at A&M is that their inferiority complex results in a near constant overestimation of capability. Followed by a kick to the balls when the reality of their inferiority is again brought to the forefront. A story that will be repeated as long as Aggies breath... And Longhorns smile...

PS South by San Jose has a good lineup as well and they do have a tent for the audience if the weather sucks. With the Nude Party the headliner last band and Shadow Show kicking things off. Thee Sacred Souls and Nude Party should both be great but I will likely be gone by then. The Nude Party | Thee Sacred Souls | Gypsy Mitchell | Blondshell | the GOLDEN DREGS | Oracle Sisters | Izzy Heltai | Shadow Show

The Heavy Heavy is my "breakout" band for SXSW, I am pretty sure they closed our SXSJ last night. I THINK THEY PLAY AT (;#) pm at Armadillo Den. and if you take a rideshare they will knock off 10% off you tab due to little parking. The reason I think the Heavy Heavy may be a breakout? The kids shut the fuck up when they played last Friday at C-Boys. Sort of a throwback sound, but I spoke with Georgie the female lead and she was as sweet as can be. I am rooting for them to break out, AND stay true to themselves, and not go off the success cliff. But worth seeking out. I ended up going down to C-Boys to catch Shiny Ribs at 1 pm, but decided after a few songs that rather than ordering a Jack N Diet for breakfast I should want down to Hopdoddy for a 2pm Burger and Rita "Lunch/brunch." Decided to wear my summertime Aquamarine polo to try and bring on the sun rays and it worked. Turned out to be a lovely day! I can't overemphasize how much I appreciate Continental Club for keep so many bands over the years in some pocket change for survival. I ended up pretty much camping out there and seeing a lineup catered by Tomar, of Tomar and the FC's. I tend to go more towards blues and rock but talent transcends all genres and it was great to hear stuff I might normally not have sought out. A guy came out and freestyled who was awesome. Wish I had caught his name, but he was awesome on his one song. Ter'ell Shahid had a really nice set! There was a young gal who stepped up for two songs who was from NY who absolutely killed it. I recorded a lot of her last song and I think I got her name on tape, she was a cousin I believe of Tomar. Anyhow I hope that Tomar continues to curate a show for CC during SXSW in the future, I really enjoyed it. If the weather doesn't suck think I will again start at C-boys and see The Shooks at 1 pm. Then who knows. It was packed yesterday for Shiny Ribs and I am sort of hoping The Shooks don't bring out quite as large an early crowd. I am going to bet that the English Teeth Pretender's show with the guest singers will likely kick ass. I figure we will be heading out after a couple hours... but you never know. Barfield is always fun, and Tameca Jones has some real pipes. Basically something for everyone, with lots of Genre changes. Which is what I love most about SXSW. Sometimes you have to wade though some shit you don't prefer, but the surprise finds are always worth it for me! Go have some fun kids! C-Boy SOCO Stomp OUTDOOR STAGE 1:00 – SHOOKS 2:15 – TAMECA JONES 3:30 – ENGLISH TEETH PRESENTS “DAMN THE PRETENDERS” WITH 10 GUEST SINGERS 5:00 – LOW CUT CONNIE 6:30 – BIG FREEDIA INDOOR STAGE (21+ ENTRY) 1:45 – RESTOS (FORMERLY WESTERN YOUTH) 3:00 – WACO BROTHERS 4:30 – KAM FRANKLIN (OF THE SUFFERS) 5:45 – BARFIELD

Went down to SoCo to enjoy the weather, meet up with some friends, and see some tunes. The new SoCo Stomp at C-Boys is the real deal. Great stages setup outside and the usual more intimate indoor stage. Somebody I had not seen before was Django Walker. I enjoyed him even before I realized he was Jerry Jeff's son, a younger band from Ireland was Milk and they were fun. You can sort of tell instantly who the hot bands are at Continental as the surge to turn the dance floor into standing room only is pretty rapid. Not sure about the weather today, but Shiny Ribs at C-boys at 1 pm may be on the menu. Supposedly we are gonna rain, sun and then late storms today, so I am gonna play it by ear.

What would it take for Rodney Terry to earn the job?
horn4life replied to HookEm's topic in Basketball
I guess the only thing you and I differ on is that you believe that we are a premiere recruiting destination in Basketball. I think "we are getting there." I think the Moody Center is a huge plus and is a big component it truly becoming the premiere program we want basketball to become. I will also say that most of our sports are among the top tier in their areas of competition. But we have probably lit the tower less for basketball than almost any of our other sports. If you basically think Terry isn't the guy I get it. I am not a basketball guru by any means. Beard worked the portal masterfully. I don't think he will be able to recreate the buzz at Old Miss though that he did at Texas. The reason I want a very hard look at Terry is I probably have a greater respect for the fact the team could have gone off the rails. I think that is heavily discounted by most folks, simply because it did not happen. I also believe the team believes it had a lot to do with Terry. Anyhow it's an interesting debate. Hook'em. PS- I also have no idea if hiring Terry is really a good decision or not long term. My argument is that we may hurt our progress if he wins a few NCAA games and we shit can him. Simply as I cannot put a name to the coach that will say yes to our offer whose splash might eclipse was I see as potential damage from the dismissal. And of course I could be wrong. -

I am curious why you believe this to be the case? Or are you saying suck next year, and hope for the year after that? Not trying to pick a fight, just I don't think we have the basketball school reputation to recruits to make this a certainty? The fact that when he has a good product to sell he has been integral in bringing in some of the best talent we have had on the 40 acres. Like I asked SL Express above, I simply do not understand the confidence that firing Terry will result in a "don't worry we will be just fine." Texas Basketball hasn't been that good the last 10 years. So that's not where my automatic thoughts go. I think he might do pretty well selling the program to recruits, as well as retain the kids already in the fold. IF he's gone, I think a lot of kids and future recruits will view it as a betrayal. Not saying that is reality, but that might be the perception. The only certainty at Texas ,is the absolute certainty that there will be a "Fire ________!" Thread the day a "permanent" hire is made. Fuck I hope Terry and Company win the whole Damn thing, so we can all stand around and backslap each other on what a fantastic hire we have made! -
Well today is multiple plans - but I will give a tip of a hat to what I know will be a great show. An early 3:30 show at Continental Club with Carolyn Wonderland and Shelley King, cover's $10 but worth it, they put on a very, very good show. If you don't have to work, that's one I might circle. We had planned to do to C-Boy for Louisiana Lafayette's party with crawfish, but there are a shit ton of RSVP's so we may do something different, as I doubt we can get loose before 4 or 5 today. I also have become a big fan of the Hotel Vegas. The indoor/outdoor stages were great, and they even had a decent hamburger though $14. I think it's one of the best SXSW venues offering up as much or more music that anybody. Best thing about today is if you get in before 5 pm you get in for Free. You have to wade through some of the not so good (or genre you don't prefer) to get to the bands you want. In fact probably if I was a late nighter I would be camped out here today. To see the Osees, and Austin's breakout "boy band with tits" Die Spitz (jimmy jazz's daughters group). But probably too late for me this early in the week. Shooks in the day, might be a winner too. Anyhow get out there and have some fun... "kids!"

Basically as I said in the recruiting thread, we are at a tipping point where getting rid of Terry may provide more negatives in the eyes of recruits about Texas, than the positive aspects of a big name hiring splash. As quite frankly I think the team thinks it's Terry's team. I also think that success breeds 1000 fathers, failure none. We could have gone right down the rat hole. Scratching by fucking Rice, barely getting by OU who is not even in the NCAAs, and then getting fucking hammered by K-State...it could have gone bad. And I think that is underestimated, by most folks. But I bet it's not what any of the players on our team think. Anyhow voted for sweet 16. Simply as in my mind it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process. If Terry sucks in year two it's not like we can't give him with a big buyout and try to make that coaching splash. IF he shits the bed vs Colgate, I think it opens the door a lot more to an exit. I also think that no matter what happens there are gonna be a lot of folks on the other side. I was honestly surprised that so many thought a 16 or 8 finish was necessary. Simply as we haven't had many of those. I will say that if he gets two wins and we fire Terry, I can't honestly think of a hire big enough to offset the negative perceptions of canning him. So damed if we do, damned if we don't to some degree. IMHO flame away -
The secret is you have to go back 3 blocks off congress for street parking. You might get lucky with some Congress avenue parking, but i just usually go for the third block back.

Wife got done a hair early, and we got the wild hair and went down to Hotel Vegas, to see Iguana Death Cult after checking out some of their music. They were great. Sort of funny for me to see today's mosh pit closing out Rickshaw Willies Burger Patrol. I grew up seeing folks fall out and taking a boot to the face in Houston, so it was sort of interesting to see this help the other guy up mosh pit. A lot better to have it all be in good fun, that's for sure.It was funny because I don't think my wife had ever seen a mosh pit, and was worried Iguana Death Cult was gonna be a rehash of the pit. Iguana Death Cult was some band from the Netherlands I think and I really enjoyed them. Reminded me a fair amount of The Clash so many years ago when they first came though town. Good lead singer/ guitar player with killer energy. Glad we got the wild hair and went on down. Now likely SoCo Tomorrow, or maybe boomerang back to Hotel Vegas. Good to take advantage of the nice weather.

2023 Houston Texans Offseason - A Huge #2
horn4life replied to The Earl of Texas's topic in Football
The only question the Texans need to ask regarding a QB pick... Are you fucking smart enough not to do really, really, really stupid shit off the field that will fuck the organization needlessly in the Ass? Then you pray like hell they don't ponder for a second... -

That was the second game of Big 12 play after an absolute nail biter vs OU to win by one. I think a LOT of folks forget those two games starting off Big 12 play. We could have been not very good, and a lot of folks were nervous back then. There was still uncertainty about Beard's fate at that point, and the team was not exactly clicking on all cylinders. Beard was dismissed two days later, and the team was fully Terry's without question for the players from that point on. -
Yeah Hotel Vegas/ Volstead is one area that has really gone wild as SXSW. Usually I just drive to wherever I am going but, Hotel Vegas is also right next to the Train. But I never have ridden the train. Might be the best way in and out should I decide to head down on the weekend. They have shit going today as well. A Giant Dog is good and i've hear good things about Pleasure Venom. One day I have to see Pelvis Wrestley just for the creative band name. and Iguana Death Cult has good name and good sound. But alas probably too busy today... but gonna do that train research

My Nephew is getting married next year, and the wedding in on the 4th of July weekend. I am assuming that plan tickets around the 4th are gonna be expensive and was thinking of perhaps making a longer trip and maybe going to DC for a couple days to see museums, Smithsonian and what not. Or maybe do stuff around Philly? I just want to do more than go to the wedding and back if I am dropping $800+ per round trip. Now maybe I can get cheaper flights by booking early, but looking at nearly any July weekend travel to Philly was around $400 each way. Now maybe I should just go out and back, but seems like I might take advantage of being in the NE and go to Washington DC? Or do I go on a Philly food expedition for a few days and call it a weekend? At least it's a normal Saturday wedding, rather than some Friday night or Sunday bullshit. I don't know where in Philly the wedding is yet, but the wife has never been to DC and I thought it would be cool to do a few days of National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, etc. Not sure if there are any cost savings flying into Baltimore/Washington, or not. I thought about a trip to NYC, but seems like DC might be a better option. Anyhow tell me what you would do. We are trying to decide whether or not just to take a week off and go see a bunch of stuff before the wedding. I am open to ANYTHING or ANYWHERE near Philly, as long as I can make the Wedding.

Figured somebody here might know. I see them every year, but the sheer numbers are overwhelming this year. I am wondering why there are simply so many this year. Damn things keep getting into the house when we open the doors. I know that this "plague" will pass due to short lifespan. But curious about why so many this year?

Side note: ALWAYS take a picture of your license! Simply because if you lose your license and do not have a picture of it... you gotta find your passport, birth certificate, pound of flesh etc. Whereas if you have a picture of you license you can go to the DPS website and enter that long audit number at the bottom of your license. And in less than a week you will receive you new license in the mail. The real problems with not having an ID? Try to get money sent to you after having your wallet stolen! It's damn near impossible unless there is a branch of your bank that allow you to withdraw off your fingerprint or other biometric Identification. It took me talking to the VP of my bank and having a faxed letter to a bank in Corpus just to get $150 of my own money to get enough gas back to Austin. It was actually sort of crazy, and I can only imagine what would happen to somebody without resources who lost their license and needed money. Fucking crazy. Whenever, I read these stories it reminded me of how easy the state of Texas has made getting an official ID in Texas... to help with voter ID requirements. 😉

This is exactly where I see the potential for problems where the negatives may outweigh the name hire "splash." Everyone knows that in todays recruiting the coaches recruit like hell, but so do the players. Transfer portal makes this a lot more dangerous than it used to be. Would we keep what we have and add to it in the portal? Or lose the future players we have developed this year and easily replace any losses with the new big name coach? Something in between? It is an interesting dilemma to be sure. But I think a lot of folks discount the fact that this team could be in a complete rebuild if the players don't buy into the, "Yeah Coach Terry kicked ass, but you know Chris Beard was actually responsible for this teams victories." The mantra of a lot of a lot of folks which I understand. I personally simply just don't think you will find many of the actual players on our team agreeing with that premise. An that to me is the fly in the ointment.
-
We are now in the territory of losing as much as we might gain by getting rid of Terry. Of course Terry could win the Big 12 Championship last night, and shit the bed in game 1 of the NCAA's but that is probably not the most likely scenario at this point. Had Shaka Smart won two or three games in the NCAA's would he still be our head coach? Only a first round loss makes the decision easier to replace Terry. I agree that Beard was the man who put all the parts into place, then created the fucking chaos that could have EASILY allowed for this team to implode and shit the bed this season. The Big 12 is without a doubt the toughest conference in the country, and we have seen more and more contributors as the season has rolled on. At this point in time I think that we are right at the tipping point, where firing Terry would have more of a negative that might overwhelm any positive of a splashy hire? If Terry wins three games I think we would be fucking stupid to fire him. Others will differ. It's not like the old days where the new coach can come in knowing that there is at least a solid core group of players to build upon. The transfer portal could remove a lot of the talent extremely quickly. While basketball is a business to a lot of the players I think it foolish to discount the emotional ties that a coach builds and profits from in truly creating a team. I think that a lot of folks think you get the talent, you win the games. Sort of... The hard part is getting the very best players to think of the team first, rather than the potential of their personal highlight reel. It's harder than you think in most instances. Anyhow I think we are at that point where there is no clear good choice. Texas' desire to make a splash with a new hire is certainly understandable. But I think we are at the point now where if Terry wins a couple more games the negative perception for potential players may be as big as any splash. If you want Terry gone, his victory last night was disappointing. If you want Terry gone, each NCAA win makes your position less palatable. So if you want change you need to root for the Horns to dump the first or second game. The only certainty is that Texas is not a basketball school. It is a football school with a shit ton of other sports that compete for championships, while our football team does not. (Yet!) I think if given the opportunity after making a decent run in the tournament we shit can Terry, we start from scratch. Probably retain a couple players, and lose just as many to the portal. It's also possible that Terry might not be able to raid the portal in the same manner as Beard. But if Terry has a Big 12 tourney championship, and a sweet 16 appearance... you have more to lose than gain IMHO. I am looking at this mostly from the recruit perspective. Terry has something going here, and the team clearly loves him. A lot of times the new trophy wife is not embraced by the kids, no matter how famous or respected by everyone else. So I guess a lot of us are rooting for the team to win a few more games... and a lot of folks are rooting for an early exit making it easy to replace Terry. I don't honestly think you can with a straight face root for both.
