It's a tough trade-off in terms of getting there early, because while you'll get their mom there earlier for a good seat, it can be an extra couple of hours for her out in the evening heat.  If it's the two of you (or more), get there early to get seats (60-90 minutes prior to commencement), and then let your mom go inside one of the 6-pack buildings or nearby churches to stay cool/shaded.  And then bring her out as the ceremony begins.  There's really no strategy to where you sit, you won't be able to see your graduate in any way, shape, or form.  So just stick to shade, or an aisle seat for your mom's sake.  Most people enter from the west or southern ends.

If you donate $200 to UT in anything but athletics, I'll give you my parking pass which will enable you to literally park about 50 feet from the South Mall/6-pack.  No, it's not a handicapped tag.

Thanks for the great advice and taking the time to post this.

  2. My son is the one graduating, so I am looking for advice more in the area of where to park, when to get there, bet places to sit, etc. My 80 year old mom will be with me, so I am trying to do a little advanced planning. You know, insider tips from someone who has been through one before.

  3. My Longhorn graduate is starting a new job this summer in The Woodlands, and is thinking about living in Conroe as apartments appear to be a little less expensive. That of course means driving I-45 to and from work daily. What is the traffic like for that commute? Hook'em!

Yeah I've been looking into it and it might not be so bad as we'll probably spend a lot of time eating and getting drunk. Hopefully the worst thing I'll have to do is watch the damn Backstreet Boys, but that was her favorite boy band growing up so it'll be enjoyable enough if she's having fun.

How is freemont street? I booked 4 nights in the 2 story Spa tower suite at Golden Nugget and from my limited research there seemed to be some good dining options nearby in Andiamo, Vic and Anthony's, Pizza Rock and Carson kitchen. I'm sure we'll spend a lot of time hopping around casinos on the strip and doing stuff like the High Roller too.

Also, has anyone seen the Michael Jackson show? Was thinking to make that and backstreet boys the two higher priced shows we see.

My wife and I saw the Michael Jackson show last May at The Mandalay Bay, and while entertaining, it was LOUD. Of course I am an old so maybe it wasn't really that loud.

Fremont Street on the other hand is great! I have always stayed on the strip until my last trip 3 weeks ago, when my son and I were at Main Street Station for 3 nights. Cheap food, cheap drinks, cheap gambling, and decent inexpensive rooms can't be beat! Not to mention the awesome bands and people watching at The Fremont Street Experience every evening. Also, whether you stay downtown or not, check out the Mob Museum. It takes about 2 hours and is well worth the price.

  5. Bally's has had $5 craps early in the morning, but expect most strip properties to be $10 at a minimum. Four Queens and all other downtown casinos to have $5 tables 24/7. At least this was the case when I was there 3 weeks ago Tuesday-Thursday. 2nd the Ellis Island diner and brewery, and get the steak dinner special with their player's card.

News said it'll be a few wks depending on weather, can't imagine what kinda shit show it woulda been around there if it happened during Christmas season as if it's not bad enough.

Let's hope the Montgomery Street road crew is not working this one or it could be years.

  7. I tried Brix BBQ in the Americado Food Hall on Saturday. The lean brisket, pork ribs, and homemade sausage were all excellent. The cilantro based coleslaw and ranch style beans were pretty good too. There is wait service, and one single menu/check for all of the food stands and the full bar. Much better set up than having to stand in line. Brix is only there weekends.

  8. I went to the recently reopened Sammie's BBQ on Belknap for lunch on Saturday after reading their new pitmaster is from La Barbecue. I had the two meat platter with two sides. The lean brisket was moist and tender, and the pork ribs were very good. Added bonus for me was the mustard potato salad which few places seem to get right, but this place does.

Think I'm gonna try that Bourbon Street joint tomorrow night. Bowl of gumbo, half dozen raw, half dozen char grilled sounds real good right about now.

I went there last week and can report that the gumbo is legit.

  10. Long time lurker and Arlington Heights resident here. Went to Barrel and Bones in Montgomery Plaza last night. Brisket was way under-cooked, and a can of Community Witbier was $7. Even though the service was excellent and the owner engaging, I probably won't be back.
