Would you rather us meltdown about losing Broughton and go three pages about how worthless Giles is? I think half a day reliving the good old times is needed given what is about to transpire over the coming weeks.
any more mentions of Broughton should be moved to the Strangers with Candi post thanks modz

I'm not sure I understand his last sentence.
I think he's saying he's going to get a lot of his predictions wrong and is blaming the staff for recruiting like ass... probably

Plus a shitty o-line...
it was all insufferable.
Warren was probably the worst style of back for that line-play. Porter a close second.

He was tearing shit up for the Raiders until he went down with a season ending injury. He had one carry in the USC IIRC and it was better than anything Porter put on tape all year long.
He was tearing shit up for the Raiders? Wow man let's go get him back!
He wasn't tearing anything up or down for the Longhorns.

Giles has been covered and if anyone believes that lazy fuck is an excellent coach, they’re doing so out of personal psychological need.
Some think he's a "plus" coach, and I'm one of them. I said "Plus Plus" once, but I have a tendency of over-complimenting someone before I go in on them, so I'll take that back fast and take any shit I get for having said it. But whether I or you/whoever feel he's a plus coach or developer of talent or not is really immaterial here: the dude cannot recruit worth a shit, and no one's having luck covering for him. You HAVE to be an excellent assistant coach to have any chance of keeping your job on a staff when you suck this bad on the trail, and Giles is not an excellent coach. It can't go unaddressed by Thomas Herman much further.
Agree with everything on Broughton. There's no way to spin losing these last two guys to aggy (one so far, but two on the way), especially when they're about the only 5-star caliber players who are giving you the time of day at that position. I get it, they're good at identifying the lesser-rated talent, but you need to be able to pick off of the top guys tree at some point.

I just dont buy this "Great Coach, Shitty Recruiter" notion without some kind of support.
I mean, if you're going to say his opinion is bullshit, at least offer up a specific metric as to why you think that, other than "Well that's my take." What has informed and has grounded your take? Is it back to back defensive Big 12 linemen of the year? Is it Poona Ford shining in the NFL? Well, ok I guess. I know it's not respect for him and his charges in the actual NFL draft by scouts. And I know it's not the development of Breckyn Hager. But at least that's a debate. What is NOT a debate is that Giles stopped putting talent in the high rounds of the NFL draft when he stopped being on a staff with Mack Brown, and he didn't have additional DLine help. I also know that Oscar Giles hasn't recruited high blue chip players since he came back to the Texas staff, and the players he has gotten were the result of Meekins/Carrington/Washington stepping into recruitments to win Ossai, Coburn, and Ojomo.
So he hasn't recruited well since he got fired here with Brown last time, and he hasn't developed high round draft picks. He's got a couple D Line of the year recently that were by all accounts extremely self-motivated workers with high motors. The most talented D Lineman in the Georgia game looked like, not very shockingly, a True Freshman uber talented blue chip talent that he got gifted by Carrington and Kevin Sumlin. There's a pretty decent trend-line that can be drawn that, shockingly, when Oscar Giles gets really talented recruits, he gets pretty decent results.
But please, inform us why you think he's such a great coach. And not a mediocre or middling coach, but a GREAT coach?
I think he also did a good job at UH, a year with and a year without Oliver. Never said he was the greatest DL coach in the fucking land.
I'm also confused as to why I needed to go into extreme detail as to why I "think" Oscar Giles is a plus coach on the field when I wasn't gifted the same.

Belichick's bona fides would do the recruiting for him. He would probably have the most efficient bagman network in the game.
His coaching methods and culture would probably lead to an above-average roster churn, though.
They'd rename the Transfer Portal the "Beli-Checkin' Out Train." It'd be insane. (EDITED to add, how lame "Beli-Checkin' Out Train" is, but eff it, it stands.)

Because a coach builds relationships and he obviously doesn't do that or he could recruit. All recruiting is based upon is relationships
Bro, the original reply of mine you quoted had me saying he wasn't a good recruiter, not sure why you're still rambling about it.
There's a difference between coaching and recruiting, and Giles is the epitome of it, IMO.

Biggest Texas fan generated myth to this day.
Eh, bullshit. Well, if you're talking about me anyway. I said "I think he's a plus defensive line coach", and that's my take. If you don't think so, cool, whatever.

In what way is Giles a plus coach?
I think he's a plus defensive line coach. Pretty much the only reason he's still on this staff.

Definitely. What will it take to get Giles help with recruiting, and/or just fire his ass? Same Drayton. Two wr coaches is ridiculous, and we have too much dead weight hanging around. Herman can't truly believe he has a great staff, can he?
We'll see with Drayton. If he can hold on to Bijan, or pull something else, that could buy him some time. But I'm good blowing that one up.
Giles. He'd need some huge help. Plus coach. Plus Plus, but it doesn't balance out the recruiting of the top DTs thus far.

I'm not ready to concede Broughton to aggy just yet. They all thought they were getting Ossai, too, and then we got a monster. Collins will be a Longhorn/Bama battle, but I think he ends up at Texas. When aggy gets too cocky, reality hits them.
Yah, I screwed up on giving aggy Broughton already. Gunna go back and edit that one.
Anyway, I do believe we can get there, but Herm's gunna have to cut some bait over there.

It'll happen. Herman is still relatively new to these recruits, so they want to see if he's the real deal. The Georgia win was good, not great. They went to the NC game year before. Once Herman gets 11+ wins, the highly ranked D-linemen will come. We just need Herman to get these guys drafted on day 1 and 2, even if it's just 2-3 of them. Sterns and Foster are easily first round (Foster may he 2nd), and Johnson is a day 1-2 draft.
Yah, but the two highly ranked linemen in question are going to Aggy (Well, Leal did, Broughton trending).
I'm guessing Aggy, no matter who the coaches are now, can sell Myles Garrett. Two DTs in the mid rounds this year isn't shabby, I guess. Also can tell the kid he's going to play exactly where he wants to play.

Large heavy defenses are going to be phasing out. Large agile d-lineman are in. Smaller hybrid lb's with larger hybrid db's. We are fine. Stop trying to fit into the $ec mold. It's outdated.
These large, agile d-linemen are exactly what we've been bitching about missing out on. We'd prefer the best of the best of them.

Tuscaloosa is a nice area. Of course I stopped through two months after the big tornado in '11, and there was quite a big chunk of it mowed down.

Herman calls Giles: "Osco, you hearing this Broughton/Aggy momentum going?"
Giles: *chewing noises
Herman: "GILES!? Where TF are you?"
Giles: "Buffalo"
Herman: "NY?"
Giles: "WW" *dial tone

Say we're landing Washington and missing on the other three. All three elite prospects are potentially replaceable by solid prospects by this staff, although I have particularly little faith in the staff replacing Bijan this cycle, but this all seemingly coming out in the matter of two hours or so was particularly brutal.
I do appreciate this staff's ability to identify talent that isn't 5-star, but sooner or later they've gotta close these five stars. We're worrying about them losing out on THE one five star they're in legit play for on that front once again. They honestly need to be in serious contention for quite a bit more than that.

All of the travel receipts that Giles turns in from the recruiting trail are just receipts from the Buffalo Wild Wings closest to campus.
