  1. Let us know how it turns out...
  2. Not a huge fan of their wine, but don’t hate it, either. I’ve just found you can get better cabs for the same price (esp. the reserve price) or maybe a little more. We did the tour their a few years back. The facility is WAY over the top, almost comically so. I kept waiting for Caligula to pop out. That said, the barrel tastings (1) provide a really nice side-by-side comparison of wine aged in French v. American Oak and (2) provide a copious amount of wine. I still have some of their wine, and wont buy much again, but the tasting itself was a pretty good experience.
  3. Wow -- John Mueller didn't show up to open his restaurant? That's never happened....
  4. And Brian chose poorly with his dish. I mean, come on, who cooks freaking porchetta for a BOAT PARTY??? And the Blue Team, as a whole, failed to get that it was supposed to be a party, not a wake.
  5. He may have the points (or close). See my post above. Chase and AMEX both transfer 1:1 to Air France. Our total for DFW to CDG, business class, was 112,000 points per person non-stop round trip. Air France flies out of IAH, but haven’t checked the points
  6. It was $141 (lunch for both of us, 1 rib each to take home and a pound of moist to take home.). Wife saw that on the account and gave me the "WTF?"
  7. We’re Cab drinkers, but really like a good Malbec as well. Falls somewhere between a Merlot and a big Cab. It’s one of the Bordeaux varietals, but I think the best are the Argentine Malbecs. Head to Total Wine and grab a bottle of Catena Alta (not the plain Catena, get the Alta). Reasonably priced at about $45, and a nice pour. Decant and enjoy
  8. Rick Barnes’ Tennessee #1 Shaka Smart’s Texas #2
  9. Wife just corrected me (as usual). 4 full days in Rome, one of which will be going to Florence and the other to Amalfi coast (with a stop at Pompeii)
  10. Thanks. Yeah, not trying to see everything -- we are just try get a feel for it for another trip
  11. Heading to France and Italy in a couple of months. The Italy portion has been condensed because we are spending more time in France, so we booked a nice hotel in Rome and will do a couple of day trips (we will have 5 full days in Rome). One of those will be Florence. Will take an early train, so we'll have a full day. What are the 2-3 "can't miss" things to see or do in Florence? Also, any recommendations for lunch and dinner? Thanks
  12. I read somewhere (I think TMBBQ)that the owner changed his brisket sourcing/selection a couple of years ago, with good results
  13. The tacos at the 7-11 are not bad (they have a similar set up at the one inHudson Bend); biggest issue is they cook up a load of the fillings and they set on the steam table. Tortillas are good, though Haven’t tried the truck in the truck park —will check it out. The tacos from the little trailer by the old gas station at Marshall Ford aren’t bad, but they aren’t always open.
  14. I live in the 620/2222 area, which is taco wasteland. A couple of months ago, the Torcy’s in Lakeway started using different tortillas. Can’t tell if they a fresh, but they seem to be. Definitely thicker and better. I have not been to another location since then to see if this is a broader change. Oh, and breakfast tacos do require eggs. You can have whatever you want in your taco at breakfast time (except oatmeal), but without eggs it’s just a taco you are eating at breakfast time, not a breakfast taco
  15. Sorry. I haven’t set up any medium to use to post photos. You’ll have to trust me (or not) on this. I will urge you to stay away from Southside on Saturdays, so I can have more beef ribs. Ribs were about 1 1/2 lbs each Here are a couple of links, and this is pretty much what I had: https://mobile.twitter.com/southsidebbq/status/911946933576589313 https://goo.gl/images/jueWzB
  16. Went duck hunting outside Columbus on Saturday. On the way back to Austin, we stopped at Southside in Bastrop. Moist brisket was good, but they also had beef ribs on Saturday. These were the Flintstone brontosaurus ribs, and I have to say they were pretty damn amazing
  17. I had not made it over there until just before Christmas — had preordered Barbacoa and pork tamales — awesome. Also grabbed some brisket and pilled pork for that day, and had preordered a whole cryovac brisket. Really great stuff
  18. Yeah — I saw the name. What ad genius came up with that?
  19. If you go to the big places, or just go to tasting rooms (both of which I urge you to avoid for all kinds of reasons) you can show up and get a glass. Others are going to have a fee, which typically gets waived if you buy (x) amount of wine. Places I mentioned, you can do different levels of tastings, starting at $40 at Chapellet, $25 at Mumm. Krupp is higher ($90) but waived by buying 3 bottles
  20. Going to revise my suggestion slightly to make the Napa suggestions easier: 1.. Head up Silverado Trail from Napa and start in the morning at Chappellet 2. Head back down and stop by Mumm for a glass of champagne (you can hit Domaine Carneiros on the way to SOnoma, or back, the next day) 3. Grab a box lunch at Soda Canyon Store 4. Stop at Krupp on the way back to Napa. You will then be very close to Napa and can head back to the hotel. Another choice would be Miner, but I think Krupp wines are better Make reservations for anywhere you want to taste, by the way
  21. We always stay in St. Helena and do small-production places, but I can help a little: 1. I would stay in/near the town on Napa (some nice hotels there) which would make the drive to Sonoma easy. 2. Keeping you relatively close to the Napa area so you don't have to drive too far: Wineries -- can't help on Sonoma. For a great view, maybe Chappellet on Pritchard Hill (20-30 min drive but will give you a great view of the valley). Decent wine and great view. Maybe hit Domaine Carneros for champagne. For a smaller production place, the new Krupp facility (very close to Napa) has a good view and great wine, and nice people. Plenty of other stuff around (and also great stuff further up the valley, but trying to keep you from having to drive too far). I would limit to 2-3 per day (we generally do 2), and actually enjoy the experience instead of seeing how many you can hit. 3. If you follow (2), you should not have consumed too much wine and can drive yourself. If you are going to drink a lot, Uber is there
  22. Yeah -- I wanted to go to Joshua Tree. Maybe it will be reopened by the time we go...
  23. Problem is we (obviously) don’t know the area. Any suggestions you have would be great!
