  1. You're partially right. I do have a perspective that others don't. Here is a real world example. Say there's a discussion about a trial and some attorneys are discussing the legal merits of the law suit. I will read the comments but won't post because the law isn't something that I am versed on like the attorneys are. Its similar to this thread. I give a damn about the kids. If you want to hate Coach Smart, good for you. I don't understand the cheap shots at 18 and 19 year old kids.
  2. Not that any of you can understand this but every team is different. Next year, we will be primarily juniors and sophs and playing in the NIT has been a great experience and that experience could help next year. I could care less about trends. And of course, there are no guarantees. There are no guarantees that Calipari's next recruiting class will win the NCAAs. Coach K couldn't make the final four with Zion. And Burt, my comments were directed at the right audience.
  3. No. I am saying that the kids have worked hard this season and despite the fact that it didn't turn out like many fans felt they were entitled to, they still have a chance to win the NIT and despite what many of the board experts think, thats big for these kids and can be a positive going into next year. My comment has nothing to do with the coaches.
  4. You probably shouldn't post about things you know little about.
  5. He lives on a 260 million ranch. I would like to be a show pony like him..
  6. Great game guys. Enjoy the night and then get ready for the finals. The NIT has been huge for the kids and could pay dividends next year.
  7. I don't think that there was a Klein High School in my day.😀
  8. Think of the biggest afro you've ever seen and thats what it looked like.
  9. Braff, the media didn't like him and they did everything they could to hurt the program. For example using this example, the late .Anita Martini did an interview with Godine when he was in a hospital with a bad sore throat. She did so because she wanted to make Coach Black look bad by investigating this poor innocent black child. The next day, I called her show and made her look foolish. Last time that I have called a radio show. The point is that for some reason, much of the media didn't like him. And he was honest to a fault.
  10. True but he didn't get smart until he went to Cal Tech. I know he's a native Houstonian. I think went to one of the Cy Fair high schools.
  11. No. These 3 kids knew that they were being investigated to make sure that their recruitment was clean. That's a problem for you? Thats not what killed the SWC. It was television because of the demographics of the conference and then the pigs left. SMU was a gazillion times worse. BTW, the media disliked Coach Black because he was honest and wouldn't play games.
  12. I thought that this thread was about Sheldon Cooper's grandmother buying a new purse.
  13. Best hair I ever saw on a white boy. Danks parents owned a funeral home in Kentucky.
  14. A couple of comments. First, Coach Black didn't snitch. When Godine and Williams came in for their official visit, they were told that they were going to be investigated to make sure that wherever they went, it was a clean recruitment. Belcher who was part of the trio came to Texas and he was still investigated. If these kids were stupid enough to take stuff anyway, they got what they deserved. Coach Black was vilified in the media because those idiots didn't know the real story. As far as leaving coaching, I don't know how true that was. It had as much if not more to do with the fact that DKR treated the bball program like crap and nothing more than an inconvenience to his football team. RIP Goodner. Abe's refusal to use his bench much cost us dearly when Wacker got hurt. That was a final 4 team but the only bench player that saw much action was Montgomery who I think transferred from NC State. He could shoot but he wasn't that athletic otherwise. He became the 5th starter and it went down hill from there. The reason that Junior was headed to Providence and I believe that was before the Big East was formed was because that was his only real offer. If I remember correctly, his other offer was from the U of Indiana at Pennsylvania and that was because his brother went there. The larger point is that many of these "stars" that kids get mean little. If I am not mistaken, Johnny is still the all time assists per game leader for the Spurs and its a shame that his career was cut short. Don't sweat the stars nonsense. Most people didn't know that Krivacs was a transfer from Auburn when I think that Sonny Smith was their coach. Also, after the 3 point line was instituted, coaches started adjusting to it. Not Abe. He was actually running a 3 point offense before it actually existed. Finally, derka, the reason that I jump on you is because I knew your Dad and you had opportunities that very few fans had. You should know how hard these kids work and most fans don't. You should also recognize that coaches get too much credit and too much blame. There is no problem being critical but you should be smarter than most posters. I hope your Dad is well. Thanks for posting. It fun to remember the past.
  15. Unless things have changed, the premiums are the responsibility of the family and not the .school.c
  16. Maybe Coach Barnes should have consulted Coach Smart on how to beat Purdue. It was good to see Coach Keady at the game. Hope he is doing well.
  17. 100% correct but this may be a problem. NBA teams will tell you one thing and do something else. The Rockets told Rashard Lewis that they would pick him with one of their 3 consecutive 1st round picks and didn't. The Spurs told Cory Joseph that they would pick him and they did. If he doesn't have that guarantee, it might not be a bad idea to come back for one more year.
  18. No. My point was that Abe deserved to be fired for things that he said. Weltlich was a good coach but the wrong coach at the time to replace Abe. The larger point is that Abe let the kids basically do whatever they wanted and Weltlich was a more strict coach. Going from one end of the spectrum to the other wasn't a good fit and thats one of the reasons that kids left. I am well aware of what happened to him after he left Texas. I am also aware that in the coaching community if things don't go well, its tough to get another high level coaching job..
  19. This is about the kids not the fans.
  20. I didn't know Bob so there may be some truth to what you say. I am not sure that Coach Knight was involved but maybe you know something that I don't and thats certainly possible. What I do know is that there was a 5 man committee to pick a new coach and the committee didn't like the fact that Abe basically had few if any rules and thats one of the main reasons they picked Bob. And don't forget that Bob's Ole Miss team had the SEC tourney stolen from them by the SEC refs against Kentucky at the end of that season. Look at Gene Bartow. He followed Coach Wooden. We played them several times and he was a great coach. But it was impossible to follow Coach Wooden. I am not comparing Coach Wooden and Abe other than they were 2 really good coaches but sometimes coaches put themselves in tough positions and again I am not a Weltlich apologist.
  21. Again, Weltlich wasn't the problem. The problem was that almost no coach could have stepped in for Abe because he basically had no rules. BTW, Abe was the first coach to have the Drum so Im not sure how he increased attendance unless you're comparing Gregory to the Drum.
  22. You basically made my point. Abe's kids basically did what they wanted. Obviously, they had to show up for practice. When they went on road trips, the kids were told that the bus leaves for the game tomorrow at a certain time and be on it. That was it. If they didn't want to go to the shoot around the day of a night game, they didn't have to. There were no team meals. The kids got meal money and they could do whatever they wanted with it. Weltlich as almost every college coach in the country had rules. You went to the shoot around. You had team meals, etc. I'm not sure that there were many coaches that could have followed Abe under those circumstances. And Dodds didn't make the decision alone. He was part of a 5 man committee that chose Weltlich and he went along with the other committee members.
  23. Maybe we should go after Bruce Pearl who just won the SEC tourney.
  24. Not to change the subject slightly but Junior is a great reason not to sweat all of this star nonsense. Based on his offers, he probably would have been a 2 star recruit.
