  1. Maybe she’s actually an evil genius that knows she’ll be called back quicker if she’s a loud pain in the ass in the waiting room.
  2. I mentioned this one up thread. Wow, what a movie.
  3. But isn't that a distinction without a difference? Either way, you are asking God to intercede. Where is the line that God can help? They can change the mind but not the body?
  4. 2005 Texas was only good because of VY, so they weren’t really that good.
  5. Just make sure you do something with it. I know many of the "we're praying for you" types that I have come across are doing it to just feel good about themselves for doing something without actually doing anything. If you want to be useful, bring my family food or watch the kids for a night when I am stuck in the hospital and my wife is doing everything in the house.
  6. I had a whole new experience today. I was waiting for a sandwich at a shop and some dude was watching The Family Guy on his phone. It was full volume where everyone in the small place could hear it. JAIL
  7. I have been struggling with the prayer issue as I have been battling cancer for 3 years. At this point whenever someone says “I’m praying for you”, I just want to yell “it’s been 3 years, what’s the fucking point? It ain’t working” To me, these are the options: 1. There is no higher power 2. There is a higher power but is unable to effect anything 3. I have been abandoned by said higher power Any way you slice it, what’s the point of the prayer? Is there a jar with my name on it, with a line and when the prayer count goes over that line, I am cured? I have basically ceased going to church outside of some things for my kids and since I explained the above to my wife, she kind of stopped asking me to go. I can’t imagine losing a daughter (I have an 8 YO going to Longhorn this summer) at summer camp and not feeling the same.
  8. I have a friend very close to me who has three daughters there. All safe, one waiting to be picked up by his wife. He was in another state getting his son from camp. Can’t imagine being that far. After I checked in, I decided to leave him alone but will check back in a couple days. I have a few other stories but it sounds terrible. We have an 8 year old daughter, so there are a lot of connections out there.
  9. I always loved when David Benioff was winning all of those Emmys for GoT, he would always say “thank you to my wife, Amanda Peet” to remind everyone who was married to and that he’s just running up the score.
  10. Who the fuck doesn’t think Amanda Peet is hot? She’s been hot for 25 years and always an enjoyable presence.
  11. TIL that he was Virginia Madsen's brother.
  12. People have forgotten about Edgar Wright. IN
  13. I had a variation on this the other day. I was walking through Target and some woman was playing music through what sounded like a speaker (it was at least her phone speaker) while shopping. I am not immune to the charms of the Britney Spears techno-pop hit "Toxic", but I don't need to hear it when shopping for a birthday present for my kid's snot nosed friend. JAIL.
  14. Three straight days of something building SE and then dying in Austin.
  15. I wouldn’t say I loved it but I agree with this take in general. There were a couple of things I didn’t like (including the tonal whiplash at the very end), but there was some really cool/fun shit. The chase at night was especially awesome. But yeah, it is a very strange movie.
  16. Every beach needs to have a jail for people who play music on their bluetooth speakers. Some mother fucker had his speaker in the sand near the surf, facing out into the ocean, playing some trash pop country music. He goes to jail without parole.
  17. I have seen pieces of Jaws for years, but I don't know if I had seen it straight through since I was a teen, 30 years ago. I remember liking it, but didn't hold it in high esteem. I listen to The Big Picture/The Rewatchables, etc, so I am a movie guy and they hold it in such high regard. So, I saw it at Alamo last month in the theater to get the experience and was blown away by how good it is. It deserves all of the praise it had received for 50 years now. My wife we with me to the Jaws on the Water thing for Alamo a couple weeks ago. I honestly offered for her to go out of politeness, because I was sure she would say no and I could go with a friend, but she said yes. I enjoyed it, but her feelings were very mixed, particularly the divers grabbing at her feet. She liked the movie, though. It's just not a great way to see it for your first time.
  18. I have kids who are 5 and 8 and they have no interest in Elio. I'm very interested in the effect Disney+ (and other streamers) is having on the original animated film issues. I think there is just so much available now that if they want something new, it's right there for them. Why go to the theater for something new? They're much more interested in the continuing (or regurgitated) adventures of their favorites. When we were little, we still had our favorites, but we didn't have direct access to new things, so it was exciting when a new movie was coming. It's the same issue with movies in general, but worse with kids since they just don't care where they see things.
  19. I've been working through the movies of modern Asian masters, so Park Chan-wook, Wong Kar-wai and Bong Joon Ho. Park Chan-wook is my guy. I watched Oldboy years ago and I praised The Handmaiden earlier in this thread. I got to Lady Vengeance and that movie is so much my shit. Woman is wrongfully imprisoned and puts together a team of a sort to help her when she gets out to get revenge. Fun first hour getting her crew together and the second hour is devastating. Park is clearly a deranged person, but he puts together some incredible movies. I still have some work to do on Park and Wong Kar-wai (In the Mood for Love, holy shit), but I have finished up Bong (great throughout, Parasite is still tops). It's been a fun project. May start an international film thread to discuss more.
  20. I've always felt that Citizen Kane was good, but its' stature is more about how influential and innovative it is. He used so many techniques that were brand new then, but are just part of visual storytelling today. I like The Third Man better if you're looking for more Orson Wells.
  21. Disappoint her.
  22. This was for Rilo Kiley. I got squared away on the floor. I assume it will just be a bunch of people in their 40's, so GA should be fine. This show is on Thursday night before OU, so we're making a weekend of it and going to the fair Friday and the game Saturday. Should be a great time.
  23. Listen, I get the importance of Raiders and how good it is. But, if you put the two movies in front of me and told me to pick one to watch, I would do Last Crusade. It came out when I was nine and it brings me so much joy.
  24. What's the story on the Bomb Factory in Dallas? Is balcony worth the extra cost?
  25. I've seen random clips of Taskmaster over the years, but I saw Jason Mantzoukis was on this season, so decided to give it a shot. Very little makes me laugh more or brings me more joy. Basically, the hosts put 5 comedians/actors through a series of tasks in an episode and name a winner. The tasks are sometimes clever, sometimes the tasks are there to make the contestants look like total asses, and sometimes both. A ton of low stakes fun
