  1. The last line of defense may be stand up comics, or other forms of satirical comedy. Or, in all seriousness, just the arts in general. Allowing the arts to be defunded, monopolized, politicized, or marginalized may indicate that the end is near. Organic, artistic expression keeps people awake.
  2. A great song. As an aside, I watched a movie from the 80s called Local Hero the other day. Kind of a weird little movie. Music by...Mark Knopfler.
  3. People are not static beings. They can evolve. I don't think he's a huge POS and not predisposed to abuse women. I think he allowed himself to remain in a bad situation for such a high strung individual. It indicates poor self-knowledge or inability to manage and resolve conflict. Those issues don't go away. Who knows how the rest of his career will go. But Hookem2147 said it best. Not being mugshotted in an orange jump suit on game day is a minimum qualification for this job, for better or worse. Milk is spilled. Move on.
  4. That stumped me because I had no idea Adelaide was a queen of anything.
  5. So, lots of undeveloped and/or undisciplined talent. That doesn't happen in a short period of time. There must be something rotten in youth and lower level school sports that feed that school. Or just overall community rot. It's a shame for kids coming up in that system if that's the case.
  6. Maggie Moores. Had a similar feel to Fargo. Idiots vs Normal Cops. I won't tell you who wins. The hired killer kind of steals the show at the end imo.
  7. The girl who plays the bar co-owner is good. Would like to see more of her.
  8. Might be too far south for you but we loved Durham and York. Especially Durham. It's the kind of place that seems frozen in time. The cathedrals in both towns are spectacular. There's more shopping and what not in York but it's more crowded. Great ancient history museum in York next to the old abbey ruins. And a fabulous train museum. we spent a few days in Newcastle and were pleasantly surprised. Aside from the interesting architecture it had a real modern upbeat vibe compared to my expectations.
  9. When we lived there we loved Paloma Blanca. No idea if it's still good. Used to love split pea soup and a root beer from Schilos and the biscuits and gravy from Gunther House. The days when everybody drove slow.
  10. Lake Como is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Padua was also lovely. But that was 30 years ago. In Rome I got a slice of pizza from a street vendor and could not believe how good it was. Driving around Tuscany seemed like heaven. Enjoy.
  11. If you're visiting the Dday beaches it's probably worth a side trip to see the town of Bayeux, with the highlight being the tapestry. The audio tour of the tapestry is magical. We did it twice in a row. The adjoining museum upstairs is really interesting too. There's also a military museum on the outskirts of town that's kind of a hike but fairly interesting. As far as the beaches, of course you'll want to see the American Cemetary and Omaha. I did not make it to Utah. I also found the town of Arromanches-Les-Bains worth a visit, with a little museum and lookout point onto the artificial port. You could spend days in the area. We used the Rick Steves guidebook to figure out what to do. Or, just driving along the coast from town to town is a nice way to spend a day. The weather can be really shitty in the Spring (and obviously into June) but there's so much to do and see you don't have to let it mess things up. Rick Steves recommended some small guided van tours of the beaches. We looked into those and almost did one, but in the end just decided to wing it.
