J. Scott Wilson, 74 of Austin, died October 31, 2025
Scott was born on September 29, 1951, in the old St. David's Hospital at 17th and Rio Grande in Austin during a UT Football game against Purdue. He attended Gullett Elementary, Lamar Junior High, and McCallum High Schools, graduating from McCallum in 1969. As a senior, he was the Drum Major of the Marching Band.
Scott graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May of 1972 with a BBA in accounting. While at the University, he was a member of the Longhorn Band. In the Longhorn Band, he was a member of the Band Council and Kappa Kappa Psi, as well as a Flag Section Leader. He attended Baylor Law School in Waco, graduating with a JD in May 1975. While at Baylor, he served as an Associate Editor of the Law Review and as a member of Phi Delta Phi. He was licensed in Texas as both an attorney and a certified public accountant.
He first served as a Briefing Attorney for Judge Connally McKay of the Twelfth Court of Civil Appeals in Tyler in 1976-77. From 1977 to 1985, he served as an Assistant Attorney General of Texas, working in the utilities, transportation, and Medicaid fraud areas under three attorneys general. While with the A.G., he appeared and argued in many appellate matters, including cases before the Texas Supreme Court and the U.S. Fifth and D.C. Circuit Courts.
He was a Staff Attorney for the State Board of Insurance from 1985 to 87. He worked as Risk Management Attorney for Texas Association of School Boards from 1987 to 97. He was a trial attorney for the State Board of Public Accountancy in 1998-99. Since December 1999, he had been in-house Counsel for the TML Multistate Intergovernmental Employee Benefits pool, from which he retired on December 31, 2016.
Scott's love affair with UT athletics began at age 7 when his father took him to see Texas and SMU play football. Continuing to go to games through his younger years and through college, he began a remarkable odyssey through Longhorn history, attending every football game, home and away, from October 22, 1977, forward, for 595 games in a row. Football was his first love in UT sports.
However, UT Baseball would become his last love. He first attended one of these games in 1969 versus Notre Dame at old Clark Field. ln 1975, he began sitting with the Wild Bunch at Disch-Falk Field. In the late eighties, he became the unofficial cheerleader, running up stairs and leading clapping. He also led the fans and players in the Eyes of Texas at the road games, win or lose, start and finish of every ball game. From 1981 forward, Scott missed only three UT Baseball games, home and away. He had attended the last 1564 consecutive UT Baseball games, home and away, starting in April of 2000. He went to 40 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, 20 of which Texas was a participant.
Scott also attended all other UT sporting events, holding season tickets in up to seven sports at a time. He attended many road events in other sports, going to four Softball World Series, eight NCAA Volleyball Final Fours. several NICAA Golf national Championships, and a Women's Basketball Final Four. He was present when UT won nine national championships in four different sports. He witnessed UT athletes playing in 40 different states and on two continents. Combined with other travels, he visited all 50 states and all 254 Texas counties.
