Couldn't agree more. His last album had me like WTF. I understand the need to explore different sounds but at least make it listenable.

I love the last album.  It's no where near country but its a jam. My only gripe would be that the vocal could be made clearer and I would have preferred him to put some more of his soul into it.  His best moments are when he really belts it out from the bottom but he just doesn't do it enough in my opinion.  Looks like he is playing it in its entirety on the tour.  Can't wait.

  2. My ex-wife ran for school board at one of the largest ISD's in the State about 6 or 7 years ago.  It was so eye opening to see how hard the incumbents fought for their positions.  I kept asking myself why?  Why would they fight with such vitriol for a VOLUNTEER, UNPAID position.  It made no sense.  I told her there is only one reason and one reason only they would fight that hard and it wasn't for the children.

I like them both about equally. That being said, I think Isbell plays it a lot safer. He doesn't deviate much from the playbook. He'll vascillate from stripped down acoustic to full band electric. But it's pretty firmly rooted in Americana and he doesn't stray too far from what works for him. Sturgill, otoh, never seems to want to do the same thing twice. He takes A LOT more chances than Isbell. Isbell's never written two songs as different as 'Hero' and 'Make Art Not Friends'. When you take chances and diverge from the genre that initially attracted your core fanbase, you're going to alienate people.  Sturgill's more of a rock and roll diva in that he pretends he doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks when he gets great reviews, and then gets super defensive and petty when he's criticized. I love them both, but I don't think it's an apples-to-apples comparison.

Totally agree.  I'll go farther to say Isbell won't ever be as good as Southeastern again (his last two aren't even close) and I can see Sturgill just getting better and better based on what you said above.

Probably blame the airlines, oil, and car companies for helping push that attitude.

Imagine high-speed rail between San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans.

Oh, and throw in a stop in Lake Charles - 45 minutes or so from Houston to Lake Charles?  Those casinos should pay for that stretch alone, because a fuckton of people in Houston would hop on a high-speed train after work on a Friday, get off in Lake Charles, and head back home the same night or the next day.

Toss in a line to Galveston as well - if you could get people in Dallas down to Galveston in under 2 hours, without the stress of traffic in Dallas and Houston, there would be plenty of families who would do it.

Please no!  The Island can't handle any more people on Summer weekends as it is.

So when will mlb release the findings on the Red Sox 2018 cheating? I can’t wait to see the double standard response from all the writers and news media. I’m curious how they couldn’t run a investigation simultaneously on both teams?

I thought last week they said today would be the day.  Prolly waiting till after 5:00 so it has the weekend to blow over like a weak fart.

  6. F*cking Veducci going ahead and claiming the Stros cheated Kershaw even though Kershaw says he doesn't want to say that.

“What did you think that night about that game?” I asked him.

That didn’t come to my mind,” he said, referring to the Astros knowing what he was throwing.

    “What did?”

“I just pitched poorly. Lost the game.”

    “That was it?”

    “Yeah.”

“But you were dealing the first three innings.”

“I don’t have the luxury of looking at it like that, like everybody else does.”

“So your thought was just that you didn’t pitch well?”

“It was a long time ago. I knew we had to fly back to L.A., so I was probably more worried about getting my kids on a plane at that point.”

“But if you look at the breakdown of that game, you threw 39 sliders and got only one swing and miss. The last two batters drew walks on 3-and-2 sliders they spit on.”

“I’m not going there. This interview is not going there. I’m not going there.”

“Can you explain why you don’t want to go there?”

    “I can’t. It’s over.”

I was at Primary Arms this afternoon picking up a couple of orders and a transfer.  Was going to launch a MULEDICK to see if @Zwylde poked his head up, but the two cops in there were already looking at me funny.

Lol.  I'm not in the storefront but I'm sure I would hear about "some crazy ass mofo yelling MULEDICK in the store today"

Checking in to report that Mile 0 Fest in Key West was well worth the price of admission.  A lot of great venues, from beach, to pool, to boat, along with a street party kickoff and the amphitheater.

I saw Robert Earl Keen in the 278 seat Key West Theater and it was fantastic.  Saw Charley Crockett for the street party and at his 11:30 show at Irish Kevin's.  I had never listened to Shinyribs, but fell in love with them at the street party and saw them the next day at the beach show at Southernmost Resort.  Isbell only played the amphitheater, but it was a great show as well.  Lots of others along the way, new and old, that were awesome and at great venues.

Now to give my liver a few days off to recover....  After Devil Makes Three tonight in my hometown.

If you don't mind me asking, about how much $ was the trip "all-in"?  Been dying to do it since the first year.

  9. To me it depends on who is in the pot with you.  If you recognize the players and understand what kind of players they are you should be able to make a decision.  If they are fairly tight players, I still lead out to see where they are at.  If they call, you're mostly likely up against it.  Check the turn if you don't improve.

    Metro pass is 127.

My cost of living in Manhattan is probably 1.5 times what my Houston living cost (Heights) was (just comparing housing and transport).  That does not take into account ANY other costs, such as taxes, cost of food, cost of entertainment, cost of gym memberships, etc...

    Bullshit article is bullshit.

The article from Reason that I posted points this out.  The reason that the metro pass in NYC is so cheap is cause its subsidized by resident taxes that the TM article fails to address.

First thing I checked. I used blue loctite on all threads and everything is tight. I tend to agree with you though.

If you think its the scope not the mounts send it our way and we'll check it out for you.  If its bad, we'll get you a new one ASAP.  Send me a PM.

Wife left her purse at the restaurant last night.  Realized it when she got home.  Drove back and it was still there.

How in the holy hell does a woman not remember to get a purse?  You walked in with exactly one thing ... and forget it.  I have a phone, keys, wallet, and sunglasses that I take everywhere.  Out of those 4 things, I've forgotten my wallet ONE time in the last 30 years.  Like, I just don't understand how, when you get up from a place that is not your couch, you don't turn around and look to see if you've left anything.  I can't recall the last time my wallet has fallen out of my back pocket when sitting down.  I STILL look at the table, chair, and floor before I walk out of any place that I go.  /end rant

Had lunch at Dairy Queen in Bastrop one Christmas Eve coming from Marble Falls (my family xmas gathering) to Deer Park (her family xmas eve gathering).  Get home in Houston with a couple of hours to spare before we have to head to Deer Park and wife realizes she doesn't have her purse.  Call Dairy Queen.  Yes, its there.  I get to drive back to Bastrop and turn around and go to Deer Park.

    Good times.........good times.

Posted the following in the “new music” thread but can’t get enough of the new Marcus King album

    Auerbach produced it.

    Played the Opry Saturday night

Saw him at SXSW last March on the Lucy’s Fried Chicken tiny ass stage when it was still the full Marcus King Band, then at Stubbs in the fall as the “Marcus King Trio” that was a 2 hour jam session...and I think the new solo album is the best I’ve heard so far

Been hearing his new song Too Much Whiskey on Outlaw Country.  Sounds like a tribute to Willies Whiskey River and I like it.

Anybody into Charley Crockett? Dudes got a great/unique voice and wild AF backstory

Just saw that he is on the bill for Karbach's Rodeo Clown Roundup.  I've been waiting for him to hit Houston so I'm definitely gonna check him out.  Blackberry Smoke as the headliner is sweet bonus.  Seen them twice before and they don't disappoint at all.

  16. Got back into a PLO game on Friday night.  Made most of my money off two consecutive hands against the same player.  Flopped top set both hands and he calls my pot bets after pretty safe turn cards ($900+) each time.  I get lucky and he fails to hit his draws.  Sammy Farha got to my table late but I never got in a hand with him before I left.  Netted a little over $1700.
