  1. The Hammwolds are loading up the Wagon Queen Family RV rental and heading to your beautiful state to watch the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. We will be traveling in from North Carolina, through Tennessee and Arkansas, before arriving in the Great State of Texas, and returning through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Lesser Carolina. Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated as we plan out our route Austin will be our destination for a few days immediately after the eclipse, but we’re planning on being a little closer to the center path of totality for the big show We’ve considered Waco, but I’m interested in hearing thoughts about another city or town North of Austin Here’s the path: After all y’all help us decide where to watch the actual eclipse, I’ll need answers to simple questions like best barbecue, best tacos, and best brewery along the way and in Austin Thank you in advance
  2. I haven’t lived there for over a decade, but that’s near my hometown Kure is at the south end of “Pleasure Island” (dumb name) The Northern side of the Island (as you cross Snows Cut bridge) is Carolina Beach, which is rougher around the edges but has some nice beaches and more of the usual amenities like grocery stores, the ABC store, and the Boardwalk. The marina is there if you’re interested in deep sea fishing or evening river cruises (Cape Fear river runs on the backside of the island) Most bars are on this side of the island. The Fat Pelican is unique to say the least and has a huge selection of beer in the walk in refrigerated trailer. If you have a capable 4WD (not AWD), you can buy a permit to drive out on the North End. If you like seafood, in descending order of how casual: 1) Michael’s is a long standing favorite for locals. 2) Cape Fear Boil Company is new but comes highly recommended 3) Shuckin Shack has been around for a long time and is great for bar vibes + seafood 4) Hang Ten is another good option for casual Other popular spots: Flaming Amy’s Burritos (but that may piss you off as a Texan), Island Bagels, and Island Burgers & Bites I would avoid Buzz’s Roost and Pleasure Island Tavern. I won’t go into specifics, but I’m not a fan of the owner In the middle of the Island (Wilmington Beach), you will find Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar. Solid food, but even better to head out to the tiki bar for live music and drinks. It gets packed but is worth the crowd for the music and scenery. Kure is much more residential and family oriented. There is a fishing pier with several restaurants nearby. I’d highly recommend Ocean View for breakfast/brunch, and Freddie’s for dinner At the far south end of the island is Ft Fisher. There’s a Civil War museum that is set to be demolished and replaced, so this may be your last chance to see it in current form, and the NC Aquarium At the south end, you can also catch a ferry to Southport, NC, which is a charming beach town If you get sick of the island, Wrightsville Beach is much more upscale, and Downtown Wilmington is packed with awesome restaurants and breweries, as well as a ton of history Let me know if you have any specific questions, I’ll do my best to answer
  3. Wednesday, not Thursday They had a sign on their door that said back on April 12th. It was April 12th
  4. Basto’s was supposed to be open yesterday but they just weren’t. We rolled up for dinner and we’re left out in the dust Oh well, we ended up going around the corner to Limon and HFS!! Go there. Order the ribeye, the pork chop, and the lobster Sergio. Among the best of each beef, pig, and shellfish I’ve ever had
  5. Thanks for the recommendation, @midtown ordered some a week ago—this one is a keeper
  6. Never been to Lenoir, but I am a North Carolinian and have been to a couple Vivian Howard restaurants Eastern NC cuisine is actually quite different from Lowcountry cuisine, but Chef and The Farmer in Kinston, NC was excellent ~8 years ago. If they have the peanut risotto or any kind of field peas on the menu at Lenoir, you should order it. Also, Tom Thumb or any manner of air-dried sausages are a delicacy
  7. I am heading to Bucharest in a couple months. Not my first time in Romania (was in Cluj last summer), so I kinda know what to expect, but any recs would be appreciated
  8. CEO shouldn’t be far behind. Very often, it’s tech leaders advocating to spend on modernization, but it often falls on deaf business ears
  9. I’m in the city right now and just heard Billy has postponed until June

  12. Thanks for the advice. I’m somewhere over the Atlantic right now Plan is to hit Marienplatz via the S8, then lunch at Augustiner-Keller. Weather should be very pleasant tomorrow This is my first flight on Lufthansa and hopefully my last. Dreadful business class product on the A350 -It’s a 2-2-2 in business, and I’m next to a guy who’s really salty I didn’t give him the window seat so his wife could there. Sorry pal, not riding facing in with a septuagenarian guy named Helmut for 8 hours in the middle seat. She’s still next to you -broken power outlet (2 outlets shared by me and Saltman) -awful food -dated infotainment FA is great but doesn’t make up for the overall scheiss I never thought I’d say American Airlines is a great carrier, but their 777 business smokes this hunk o shit every day of the week Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Yep, but he ain’t necessarily wrong For full disclosure, UNC guy here Why is everyone so fixated on the ACC GoR? ESPN and FOX can pay the penalty out for each school they target and still profit. I just hope my alma mater doesn’t become an alma later [emoji1690]
  14. I am going to Romania for work late next month and have a 13 hour layover in Munich. What should I do with that time? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. I prefer Sweet Lew’s. But Midwood and Lew’s are also barbecue cooked in NC, not NC barbecue If you ever want authentic Carolina barbecue, and you’re in Charlotte, you have to drive an hour away to towns like Shelby or Lexington But even the most cynical of y’all bastids would approve of Jon G’s, which is also an hour east of Charlotte and only open on Saturday https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/texas-brisket-migrating-north-carolina/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. You can tip in USD, but you get hosed on conversion when paying in anything other than local Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Where did you go? That is barbecue made in NC, not NC barbecue Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. We just made it to Costa Mujeres and are taking the ferry over on Tuesday. It will be our first time visiting Isla Mujeres Our driver recommended going to a resort and purchasing a day pass. He didn’t suggest a specific one and said they’re all great Wife & I are here with no kids, so family friendly isn’t a consideration. What should we do for a long day?
