  1. aren't student interest loan rates fixed? Why would they go up?
  2. Yeah I've noticed pretty widespread over predicting of the temps from local sources. June at ABIA doesn't seem as hot as they made it sound like it was going to be during that heatwave: https://www.wunderground.com/history/monthly/us/tx/austin/KAUS/date/2023-6 Obviously it was still miserable with the heat index, but they made it seem like it was going to be over 100 on a lot of those days from mid-month on
  3. I think I remember his part in the Chernobyl mini series
  4. Thanks man. Realistically we wouldn’t be doing this until for 2-3 more years if we’re being honest with ourselves, but when the heat index is 115 you start day dreaming about gtfoing. Whenever we do pull the trigger I know who we’ll be working with on the next mortgage.
  5. when do we think house prices will start going back in the Austin metro? We bought only a year ago in West Buda (thanks Wulaw), and it is quite nice and we've enjoyed living here so far...but idk if either of us can take too many more summers around here. This is all quite hypothetical at this point, but if we were to sell right now we would lose money, seeing how we bought right before the rates turned everything over. Just wondering how long the experts around here think we have before we start to see things go up modestly. I'm sure rates going back down is a big part to play.
  6. The Village Buttery is the best place to get lunch in Ruidoso. And their pies are insanely good.
  7. I don't know if it has already been brought up, but I think dating apps make up a large part of the problem for younger generations. I am very thankful I never had to deal with them. They encourage only giving somebody a cursory glance before making a decision. It is more like a job interview process than a romantic initiation. Interactions are so transactional and disposable if you don't stand out immediately you get no matches, which would really hurt someone who might be physically unremarkable but has a lot to offer in the personality/smarts department. I know they have worked for people, but I just feel like it is overall dehumanizing and antithetical to how humans have been finding mates for centuries.
  8. I personally don't think this will amount to that much. Frankly I think too many people are addicted (myself included) and there won't be a large drop off of people who have the willpower to stay away just bc they have to use a worse mobile app.
  9. Based on Huffman's post a lot of the mod tool issues will be remediated. Granted, he hasn't really earned the right to take him at his word, so we'll see.
  10. I also agree with all of this. Reddit as a company has always been an unserious, poorly managed mess (much like Twitter in all its iterations. Elon is destroying it but it was never going to survive with Jack at the helm either). It grew in spite of its founders and subsequent leadership.
  11. I'm not really sure what people expect. The only way social media sites make money is via ad spend, and if a huge swath of your users aren't being served ads, then it is never going to be profitable. That it should be expected that 3rd party apps be allowed to pull data for free that Reddit pays to store indefinitely is kind of ludicrous. On the other hand, their API pricing model is steep for its use case, since an app is having to make a call for every single post/comment.
  12. this cell popped up right over the spot in the spot that needs it the most
  13. But don't you think it wouldn't be stigmatized if it didn't suck so much? If it took half the time to get downtown than it does sitting in a car, I'm pretty sure folks would stop caring how poor they look passing all the schmucks in traffic.
  14. sounds like both of those situations would be solved if there was actually BRT
  15. that was a fun 40 minutes heading down SH 130 when that storm came through. Very heavy wind and rain. Though some people made it more dangerous by going 30 mph when 60 was more than slow enough
  16. How often are you talking to people about riding buses? Even if your anecdotal evidence is true and only poor people rode the bus, well, we have plenty of those who need getting around. I’m guessing the bottom 25% wouldn’t mind not having to be so car dependent to free up some money tied up in vehicle expenses. Or are you saying they’re too proud to admit they’re poor despite working at McDonald’s? Also, did you just call the bicycle, the most individualistic means of transportation possible, mass transit?
  17. One maybe two of those are still there…
  18. Yep, and these are going to be the real casualties of AI. I've never heard anybody who has had to work with Indian SWE/IT teams come away happy, myself included. Most of the time it is tearing-your-hair-out frustration.
  19. I don't understand this position. Are they working with pen and paper? Are their tasks not being done via software with easily reviewable metrics? I manage a team at a software company, all of whom wfh, and there is never a question of who is doing their work or not. Just look at the numbers.
  20. sounds like you just work at a company full of retards (what does that say about you)
  21. hey, I don't want anyone to die. But I'd rather it be politicians than innocent folks at the mall or kids in a school. Kind of in a 'the end justifies the means' situation at this point.
  22. Man, I know a lot can change but I don't see how either Worthy or Ewers are 1st round picks. Especially Worthy. I guess the hope is he is like Devonta Smith but that feels almost like the exception that proves the rule.
  23. The thread title takes on a new meaning
  24. i've heard people throw out the possibility of turning vacant office space into residential units. Is that at all actually feasible? Seems like an easy way to pivot, but I'm sure there are a lot of barriers I'm unaware of.
