I didn't come here tonight to be pissed off but here we are.

In a vaccuum sure, but I doubt this was Sark walking into PK's office out of the blue with a pink slip. If PK was lining up his exit to USC or wherever then it's Sark's perogative to move forward with a clean break and secure what he views as the top option.

Heh, when you phrase it like that it does sound kind of wack. I don't really think one thing or the other, just speculating really.

BOOM MOTHER FUCKER - Will Muschamp's Triumphant Return
gmr548 replied to Nueces River Rat's topic in Football
Can you post it again? I have high expectations for Muschamp and think he can do a great job, I don't disagree with you, but with the caveat that year 1 in any new system has hiccups. It's the latter part that makes me skeptical of the fanfic line that Sark just canned PK because the defense took a step back (as if the OC isn't a bigger problem through that lens). Texas is all in on 2026 and that vision probably didn't include breaking in a new DC because the year 1 issues that can entail are at odds with the idea of maximizing next year. I think Sark was proactive in the sense that he was aware that PK was looking for an out and made a quick move to secure a top replacement - not that he just looked at PK this season and over the past 4 years and said "Nope, not good enough." Anway, I think we're kind of going in circles so I'm gonna drop this here. -
May be the other way around. Maybe he knew PK was headed out the door, putting him on a level playing field with Smith and Barnes with regard to learning a new system. Will be interesting to see if this changes our defensive portal strategy. Could be a name to watch if Texas needs a backup option for Baugh/Lacey: Was a stud behind Jonah Coleman at UW and shredded Oregon. 220 pound back with vision. Husky fans are really bummed, I think he'd have been a 1,000 yard guy next year.

BOOM MOTHER FUCKER - Will Muschamp's Triumphant Return

If Tom Brady hasn't taken a snap for two years and Tony Romo has led his unit to to four straight top 13 defensive FEI seasons, probably not unless Romo makes me think he's gonna walk and I need to be making calls to potential replacements. I'm not saying it was a bad move - I think it's the best hire Sark could have made. I just think folks should be real about where it's coming from and the challenges associated with it. Muschamp was an analyst. Smart and Schumann know a thing or two about defense. This isn't gonna have a material impact on Georgia's defense. -

The rational move would be to make a change with position coaches in the back end and not fire an established, top tier DC. Regardless, I very much doubt Sark went into the offseason looking to replace PK. The idea that he was on the hot seat or a firing was justifiable based on performance alone is silly. Seems pretty clear Sark's hand was forced. Sometimes things that are less than ideal happen. Again, don't need to rationalize it into a slam dunk. I think he's made as good a move as he can in the circumstances and we'll see how it goes, but it won't be without challenges. Stupid penalties? You serious? No amount of stupid penalties seems to satisfy Sark on offense. It's been a constant pursuit to accumulate as many as possible on that side of the ball since he's been here. If he's tired of them, the low hanging fruit is replacing the OC. -

I meant more along the lines of PK not liking where Sark was going with a replacement, or just the general musical chairs with secondary staff. I'm speculating though. I think USC/Oregon coming open this cycle (and USC not being a total gut job this time) are probably the most appealing options he'd have since being here. -

I understand the urge to rationalize in the face of surprising, potentially detrimental news; but this is giving major "I didn't want that #1 prospect we lost out on anyway!" energy. PK has been a very good DC his entire career. Losing him when we're already looking at significant roster turnover isn't great. Now we've got to install a system and re-recruit guys too. Muschamp has also been a very good DC. He knows the SEC and perhapshis more agressive style will be a nice change of pace. Change can be good and bad, even simultaneously. We'll just have to see how it goes. -

It's not like his HC teams had terrible defenses either. He is a good hire. It's very surprising news but if PK was looking for an out, Sark had to move quick to secure a hire. And PK looking for an out seems like the most likely explanation to me, and frankly the only believable one. The idea that this was a straight perfomance thing seems nonsensical. Had to be more to it. Maybe PK, a northwest lifer prior to coming to Texas, is indeed looking at USC and/or Oregon to get back to the west coast footprint. Maybe one of those two was prepared to make a truly $tupid offer he could not refuse or Texas couldn't reasonably match. Maybe Sark was going to can Akina and friction regarding position coach selection reared its head - remember, it was a somewhat awkward fit from the start with Sark hiring assistants (Mike Stoops lol) before a DC, thinking he could get Muschamp. Maybe it's a little of all of it. -
This will probably look stupid in hindsight, but I'm starting to develop a gut feeling Texas is going to kick Vandy's teeth in. Something that looks like the aggy game last year. Doesn't get beyond a 10-17 point margin because of clunky offense but doesn't feel that close.

Someone didn't get invited to the frat house. I was referring to the specific position groups I mentioned. Sark is drunk right now. Unless he's not. I don't know. Want a beer?

Well with the rumors about Arch maybe he tought Sark would be cool to party with.

All this talk about takes from back when Sark was hired. We all had'em. Some were right, some were wrong, most were a bit of both. And yet as we sit here today, one Real Man of Genius appears to be firmly in the lead for most accurate take:
