Only thing Ohio State would gain from playing the aggies is exposure to novel ovine coronavirus.

Exactly. I'm not sure when I woke up in a college football world where people felt like Ohio State had to prove itself against fucking A&M of all teams, but here we are.

If people want to say "fuck Ohio State", I don't blame them. If those people want to, out of the other side of their mouths, praise A&M, then the answer is "no, fuck you." There's a sort of implied equivalency ("oooh, they should play, they're both in the Top 5!") when the reality is, Alabama already made this a moot point by exposing what happens to teams like A&M when they tangle with the top shelf programs.

  2. It's not the fans that have created or sustained the "culture" that's the problem here. But there is a problem with our culture, going back to the political dick-swinging at the end of DKR's time here, extending through Fred Akers (RIP) demise where you had influential alumni trying to steer recruits away from UT to hasten Akers' firing, continuing through the retarded thinking that David McWilliams had shown anything that made him qualified through the job, and culminating in the mantra of "it's not good for the kids to win too much" which is where we're stuck now.

I don't know how or why we got into this mode of wanting above all else to be a Central Texas Stanford knockoff, but our culture lacks the kind of cut-throat win-first football primacy that Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and a few of the wanna-be hangers-on (LSU and Georgia, to name two) have. I don't know if Urban Meyer will be the coach here or not (it seems not), but if not, it wouldn't surprise me if a key reason was his read of "the room". He probably saw right through the salary offer and the mealy-mouthed platitudes about football being "king" here and realized this is an athletic department that intrinsically creates a selfish, soft football culture, because revenue and brand and glad-handing from ESPN and influence/access for BMDs are all more important than wins.

Meyer will try to create his own culture wherever he goes but that's easier in some locations than others, and he has limited time to accomplish it at his age.

Sounds about right. We're the only one of those programs that doesn't take football life-or-death seriously. They go to the CFB playoff, we get to look smart in our Christmas sweaters as we smirk at them playing football on TV around New Year's, what a bunch of Philistines.

Then explain to be the differentials in the payouts between Herman's original contract and the modifications contained in the amendments to that contract. Regarding payments to both TH and 1-0 LLC.

    You don't have a clue.

"Yea, but take a second look at the deferred payments due to 1-0 Culture LLC, and then calculate the NPV of the contract." Just the way to sway a high school athlete's college choice.

    lol.

Do you really think recruits scrutinize prospective coaches’ buyout terms.

    Lol

Dumbass, no, the recruits themselves can barely read. But they and their uncles get told by others how likely it is the coach they're signing to play for will be there two or four years down the road. And that's not a difficult thing to interpret contractually.

CDC can make the best hires in every other sport but if you fuck up the football hire you essentially signed your own pink slip.

you wish that it were this way, but it's not

The AD at Texas is always going to be judged holistically, and the way that whole is weighted would disappoint you as a football fan, but as long as we're profitable* and scandal-free* and in aggregate win a lot of championships, then the AD is judged to have done a good job.

Football can't lose indefinitely, but over the thirty-plus years Dodds was the AD (1981-2013), Texas football wasn't in the Top Ten in win percentage and only won its conference seven times (including the bullshit 1994 conference title), so it can be mostly mediocre for a long time without any pressure on the AD.

Football can be mediocre if Texas wins a bunch of national titles in Olympic sports and raises a ton of money and builds a lot of impressive facilities. COVID year aside, Del Conte is as good at those things as Dodds was. So get ready for a lot of lather, rinse, and repeat around here, indefinitely.

This epitomizes the ideal for Texas athletics among our leadership, and note that when this issue came out, it didn't look like Mack Brown was ever going to be anything but Oklahoma's bitch and before TJ Ford led men's hoops to the Final Four:

    * Del Conte is not going to be blamed for the drop in athletic revenues related to COVID

    * Del Conte is not going to be blamed for the tennis coach selling access

WGAS who "would have won"? Chicago's star player pussed out and ran off to play baseball for two years.  Championships are won on the field of play.  The first requirement is actually showing up to compete.  If Jordan had stuck around, he may have had a career-ending injury, or the entire team might have died in a plane crash.  Or maybe just lost to Houston--even the better team doesn't always win.  Nobody knows, and it's useless wankery to speculate.  Houston has the skins on the wall, and that's all that matters.  Their championships are just as legit as all others.

Trying to asterisk those championships is like the NCAA vacating wins as punishment. I know how it felt to root for those Rockets teams in the moment as they won. It was fucking great. I couldn't care less how it looks to anyone else 25+ years later and there's nothing that can change what it was like as it happened.

Well well well. Will ya look at those Chanticleers. And that's how ya coach a damn team. I know their HC isn't yet ready for the big time but damn will he be at some point. Go Coastal Carolina.

I'll consider him a worthwhile candidate as soon as he's put a P5 team in an NY6 bowl a couple of times. Minimum. I am done with trying to guess which G5 flash in the pan is heading to the Hall of Fame in thirty years.

The optics in these socioeconomic and political times are bad no matter what

Notice that you are saying "optics", not "ethics". In other words, how it looks to other people or what other people will think of us. Not if it's morally right or wrong, but how it will be perceived. I feel like that's how the University has run its athletics for the thirty years I've followed the programs.

If we can't stop worrying about how we'll maintain decorous appearances, then I quit as a fan. I don't care how we're perceived, optically, sonically, olfactorally, any of that shit. I want us to win. More to the point, I don't care to try to guess in advance how what we do will be perceived. I want us to to the things that are most likely to result in fucking victories on the field and I don't care if it shortdicks every cannibal on the Congo.
