Why do you assume that sports will go away?

I'm not assuming that. I'm saying a) I don't care if it does, and b) cynically speaking, if you really want people to pay attention and you really want things to change, you have to impact things they really care about. And in this country, we care about diversions an awful lot.

    Yeah, valid concern

  3. It's somewhat strange as I'm the type who always remembers shit like this, but I can't remember where I was when this happened. Maybe I wasn't watching, or maybe I was in my dorm room? I must not have seen it live. I saw Flutie's Hail Mary live on TV as a boy and I can still picture that vividly. The Michigan-MSU punt snafu, likewise, I remember it precisely. James Brown to Derek Lewis, I can see every detail of that moment in my mind's eye. But I can't picture the Michigan Miracle. Must not have been watching.

He would be a better mentor and leader if he told them to grow up, grow a thick skin and dont be distracted from your ultimate goals.

maybe, but after the players quit and his team collapsed and went 0-12 he'd be an out of work mentor and leader

and that work pays really, really well. plenty of people will line up to eat that particular Bag of Shit if Herman says "no no, this is a time for a principled stand against the mob". Jimbo Fisher's not telling his players "all lives matter!"

Upon what data will he decide if America is sufficiently not racist for him to play again?

I know you're doing drive-by zingers and I can't really blame you, but he's looking to be heard and feel like his concerns were validly considered. So what will probably happen is, he'll be on a small Committee of Concerned Athletes that get to meet with Hartzell and Milliken and teach them all the amazing things Eagles and crew know, and there will be a bunch of meaningless pandering concessions to the Committee, and then they'll all play.

This goes to what Tom said earlier this week:  you can't just love them and support them on Saturday and then write them off and disparage them Sunday-Friday - they deserve better.

OK, but what does that look like in practice? This is one of the rhetorical bits I think we need to define as part of the Important Dialogue to which we've all been invited.

One question I would have for folks is what happens to his scholarship?

this is conceptually a good question, but in practice a silly one-- you already know what happens to it, nothing.

Another of Olin's brilliant pieces from a few years ago. Linebacker U?

it's silly, but one of the least silly claims they've made about their shit-ass program. At least they DID buy a lot of really good linebackers in the 80s/90s.

This is his only leverage to effect change.

it isn't hard to envision say six teammates joining Eagles, and then influencing or pressuring another dozen to join them, and if you get a quarter of a team saying "I refuse to play football this fall", that sort of makes the "playing games with COVID/social distancing" discussion moot.

If I can learn to stop peeking elsewhere on this board, I'll be happier. Otherwise I'm out of here.

  11. if he's not going to play football, is his enrollment going to retroactively have the same admissions standards that non-football players go through applied to it...? I don't know him, maybe he was a well-rounded ace student with good board scores coming out of high school. But he's a football player, so probably not. UT's a competitive school, not easy to get into.

I don't care if he plays or not. At this point I don't care if football comes back, because this is a fundamentally unserious country and you gotta him 'em where it hurts, so let's take sportsball away and see if that's enough to provoke some real change. The players refusing to play would certainly move us in that direction.
