  1. From what I've heard most of the players who refused to sing it did so because the lyrics can be easily misconstrued to be white masters barking at slaves. One person notices it and tells the others and all of a sudden it's racist. I doubt any players knew anything about the racist show origins or Robert E Lee until this all came up. That said, can be easily fixed by changing a few words so the song isn't talking at anyone and is instead speaking inclusively to the singer as well as audience. In the end though I think most black players just think it's a stupid ass old times whitey song and feel dumb having to hold their hands up and sing it after games and would rather not.
  2. Injun faced Orange! Goooooooooooooooood damn
  3. Holy shit. Please tell me that had to be World war II era or very shortly after.
  4. I think we're thinking the same thing. In my previous post I was specifically referring to the logo itself and not the brand name. You could have the most positive honest amazing depiction of an African American as a logo but if you give it a racist name then it's going to get an uproar. I don't know for certain but I do believe that exact logo tied to a non racist name would be perfectly fine. At least it should be.
  5. The Uncle Ben's one isn't inherently racist like Aunt Jemima. It's an accurate depiction. The problem is the "Uncle" name conjures a "Song of the South" connotation and it's an old brand so getting caught up in the wash. If it had the same logo it does today and was called "Grandpa Ben's" there's probably no problem. Especially if it was a depiction of the creator of the brand like KFC and Redenbacher. And insults aren't necessary. You should be better than that. It wasn't even a good one.
  6. Again, based directly on not only real people but accurate depictions of the creator of the product. So no problem really... But I'm for getting rid of it all.
  7. First, how nice of him to discount the feelings of people for whom he had no context or understanding of their situation. 2nd, what scientific method or statistical sampling did he use to get that number? How about this: if minority communities in the US weren't treated so ridiculously unfair and badly by the white establishment and the establishment's Gestapo police maybe they wouldn't feel this way. Getting rid or altering the majority of the norms and traditions isn't punishment, it's required because for well over 150 years oppression has ruled the land in the USA. If changing all of it now can even begin to change that for the next generation then it's worth it.
  8. Well looks like your services are needed to slap down limp legs Greggy https://news.google.com/articles/CAIiECafWkV6gvPkXY_i6Ub3uaEqGQgEKhAIACoHCAowocv1CjCSptoCMPrTpgU?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen
  9. Well I meant real black people. Depicted accurately as themselves. Not caricatures No one is complaining about the Jordan Jumpman logo. And if Nike made a shoe with LeBron's face on it no one would complain either.
  10. Are nurses millionaires? Well LeBron James and Kevin Durant are. And I'm positive if trauma babe or whatever faceless nurse were millionaires they'd furnish a whole hospital which Uncle Adam Silver is more than happy to do... For millionaire basketball players only.
  11. It had just hit and was brand new so science was learning quickly but best practices hadn't been established yet. Then thanks to the idiot in charge of country calling it a hoax for 3 months we were woefully unprepared and the republican idiots in charge once again made a massive fuck up by telling people not to wear masks. They lied because they wanted to conserve the N95s for health care workers but in doing so created a subset of the population that believed them and still refuse to wear masks. You know, idiots. But since that initial phase and shut down when places have had a chance to regroup it's been the democrat states even in the highly dense NE that are steadily dropping in infection rates while trump infested places like Texas and Florida are getting out of control and killing thousands more of their people than needed to die. And we're only at the beginning of that insanity. Getting caught off guard was horrible but refusing to adjust now that the virus is better known and proven defense strategies are well known is downright criminal.
  12. You can just use real people instead of racist stereotypes. I don't get why this is hard to understand. If there's a real person behind the artwork and you have it done faithfully by a legit artist and not cartoonish then it'll be fine. Although I'm for abolishing all human depictions in logos no matter the race.
  13. Oh shit I have heard that one in Pulp Fiction
  14. "increased testing" has become the go to phrase for anyone who's in denial, for political reasons or otherwise, about just how bad this is getting.
  15. Oh shit. No ICU beds in the middle of a work week?
  16. all the medical evidence on viral infections suggests that outdoors as long as masks are required and worn it's a lot less likely to transmit. You have to almost directly get spit/mucus particles in your eyes/nose/mouth for it to happen. Which is difficult with masks on. That's why places like that aren't seeing a rise but places like Texas where the governor let every indoor activity open with zero oversight are starting to get absolutely murdered.
  17. What is this song? I've never heard it before
  18. Exactly. I knew those lyrics had to be construed that way by at least some of the black athletes that come through the school. That's why I think changing the lyrics will appease the objection. Also acknowledging that even though they weren't originally meant to be towards slaves or have any racial overtones it is understandable that young black men and women in America with the systemic racism as strong as ever could take them to mean that. So make the changes to the lyrics to make it undeniably inclusive and also remove the obligation for the athletes to stay after a game and sign the song. They can if they want but if they choose not to they can go into the locker room before it's played. But with the alterations still play it for the players and coaches that wish to partake as well as for the fan base that has come to love the song as tradition.
  19. Change that one too we when appropriate
  20. You can literally de-racist any perceived or real racist implication of the song by simply changing the word "you" to "us" anywhere it appears in the song. If all the white people are saying us it includes them too so no longer can be perceived to be towards a 3rd party which could be slaves or whatever. I think this can be smoothed over by doing things that should be done (removing known racists names from parts of campus) and conceding to change the song to remove any possible perceived racist slant with a full explanation and cooperation of the minorities on campus.
  21. I definitely understand changing both but the Aunt Jemima is extremely racist. The Uncle Ben's is less so and more like an accurate depiction of an elderly man. That said no reason to use caricatures as logos. Uncle Julio's needs to be next. It's just as insanely racist as Aunt Jemima
  22. My favorite thing Callen did was "The Chicken" part of Carlos and and The Chicken in the Radio Wars episode of Frasier. I don't know who Brenda Schlob is but Callen and that other dude sound broken up. They must have been close friends with the dude. So is he like messing with 17 yr old type of pedophile or like "8 year olds, Dude" type of pedophile?
  23. I agree with that for the very beginning of the pandemic, but by May this virus had infiltrated every single place in this country so it then became about governance and the public's behavior.
  24. 1991 didn't have the sophisticated sea of internet wannabe critics we enjoy today
