  1. “I have a really strange feeling about this game. I’m going to be honest with you. I think it’s going to be high scoring. I think both offenses are going to be able to move the football. I think that Georgia, for whatever reason, is going to play their best football game. Because Georgia, while no one is really talking about this, no one is really saying the quiet part out loud, but if Georgia loses this game it is far from a foregone conclusion that they’re in the college football playoff. They still have to go to Ole Miss. They still have to play Tennessee at home. It is not a guarantee that Georgia is in the playoff in the event in which they lose this game. Texas, however, things look pretty good for the Longhorns. So you know what I’m getting? I think I’m getting a desperate Georgia football team. I think I’m going to get Georgia’s best punch. And I think Georgia goes to Austin and pulls the upset.” https://longhornswire.usatoday.com/2024/10/17/espn-analyst-greg-mcelroy-has-strange-feeling-predicts-upset-when-georgia-faces-texas/

  3. Yesterday: According to Draft Kings Sportsbook, the Bulldogs are now 5-point underdogs to the Longhorns following their win over Mississippi State and Texas' win over Oklahoma. The line initially opened with Texas being a 2.5-point favorite. The over/under for this matchup is presently set at 55.5 points. Rece Davis picking "poor jawja" to win... (10:56 mark)

  6. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10139359-br-recruiting-grading-college-footballs-biggest-transfer-players-of-2024-so-far When Isaiah Bond left Tuscaloosa for Texas right around the time of Nick Saban's decision to retire, the Longhorns were the destination for one of the top playmakers in the entire portal cycle. So far, the 5'11", 180-pound junior from Buford, Georgia, hasn't disappointed—but he hasn't wowed, either. Even during a quarterback shuffle that saw the injured Quinn Ewers replaced by Arch Manning and Ewers returning, Bond has posted the best stats of any Texas perimeter weapon. He has 21 catches for 369 yards and three touchdowns to lead the team. Those aren't bad numbers, but we're going to be tough in this grading system, and a deeper look shows Bond has yet to find the end zone in a game against Power Four competition. He got hurt early in the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma and had just one catch for five yards. Still, coach Steve Sarkisian seems confident Bond's ailment is just a minor ankle injury, and he may suit up this week for Georgia. It would be a great opportunity for him to boost his numbers in a marquee game for the nation's top-ranked team. The 'Horns have blown out some opponents, so Bond hasn't played a bunch of complete games. But Bond has more spark in him than what he's shown so far. Could this week be a breakout performance? Grade: B+

  8. The NCAA is closing the loophole used by Oregon to shave time off the game clock at the end of Saturday's win over Ohio State. In a release Wednesday, the NCAA issued a new rules interpretation on how to handle a penalty for 12 players on the field in the final two minutes of either half. If the defense has 12 players actively participate in the down, the offense can choose, along with the 5-yard penalty, to have the game clock reset to the time that had been displayed at the snap. No time change would be made if there were 12 players but one of them was attempting to leave the field and did not affect the play. Oregon coach Dan Lanning said Monday that the No. 2 Ducks had intentionally used 12 men on defense against the Buckeyes to help run time off the clock as they closed out the final seconds of their 32-31 win. "We spend an inordinate amount of time on situations and some situations don't come up very often in college football, but this was obviously something we had worked on," Lanning said. "You can see the result." Just before the ball was snapped, Oregon defensive back Dontae Manning walked onto the field, giving the Ducks an extra defender. Ohio State failed to complete a pass against Oregon's 12-man defense, and the Ducks were flagged for an illegal substitution penalty, surrendering 5 yards but also taking four seconds off the clock. A scramble by Ohio State quarterback Will Howard on the next play ended the game. Such a ploy will no longer work going forward, as NCAA football secretary-rules editor Steve Shaw said in a statement that they were looking to "take away any gain for the defense" from committing an intentional penalty. "Football is a very dynamic game," Shaw said. "Occasionally there are specific situations where committing a penalty can give a team an advantage. A guiding principle of the NCAA Football Rules Committee is that there should be no benefit when a team commits a penalty."

  12. Halfway through the season, the Texas Longhorns' defense has been nothing short of spectacular, allowing the fewest yards per game (229.7) and points per game (6.3) in the entire country. However, some have raised concerns of the quality of the offenses they've played. Of the six teams the Longhorns have faced so far, UTSA has the highest-ranked total offense at 67th out of 133 FBS teams (396.5 yards per game). Of the Power Four teams the Longhorns have faced, Mississippi State ranks 78th in yards per game (381), Michigan ranks 119th (306.3) and Oklahoma ranks 125th (287.7). It could be a chicken or egg situation, but none of those teams have shown much offensive firepower against other opponents either. With the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs, who have one of the top quarterbacks in the country in Carson Beck and a host of offensive weapons, next on the schedule, there is some concern about how the Longhorns will hold up against stronger competition. For Texas defensive back Michael Taaffe, though, there's full belief the defense will go out there and play well. "I'm not sure who said that because I think the teams that we've played have been pretty elite," Taaffe told reporters Monday. "So, I don't want to discredit any of the teams that we play. You know, those quarterbacks have been special. I think the guy that we just played [Oklahoma freshman Michael Hawkins Jr.] is going to have a really bright future, and so there's really no discredit to those other guys. "I think, like I keep saying, Georgia's offense is elite and we have a great challenge. But, you know, we're just going to take it one week at a time and we have our full attention on Georgia." Regardless of one's opinions on the Longhorns' other opponents, pretty much everyone would agree that Georgia is the best team they've faced so far. It's going to be a battle, and the defense will have to be up to the challenge against a dangerous Bulldogs offense.

  14. Gap between first and second highest paid coach in college football at all-time high There is a huge gap between top paid coach Kirby Smart and second-Dabo Swinney. Doug Samuels 33 minutes ago USA Today released their annual database of college football head coaches and their salaries today. The list that had Nick Saban leading the way in compensation for years now has his top former pupil leading the way with Georgia's Kirby Smart. While that will come as no surprise, the gap between Kirby and Clemon's Dabo Swinney, the second highest paid coach in college football, is a record since the salaries have been tracked. Kirby's total pay is listed at $13,282,580 while Dabo is set to make $11,132,775. Back in May Georgia announced an extension for Kirby Smart's contract aimed at keeping him in Athens through 2033. The new deal included a raise of more than $2.5 million, thus widening the gap between Smart and Dabo to about $2 million. That gap is the largest it has been since Steve Berkowitz and USA Today began tracking salaries dating back to 2006. Not surprisingly, the rest of the top ten is dominated by SEC coaches with six making up the top ten. The Big Ten and ACC both check in with two on the list. Other notable nuggets from the database: Marcus Freeman is set to make $6,687,754 at Notre Dame, a private school that normally doesn't have their salary information public. Highest paid Group of Five coach? USF's Alex Golesh at #63 ($2,503,099) and UTSA's Jeff Traylor isn't far behind at #64 ($2.5 million). Lowest reported salary belongs to Brian Bohannon at Kennesaw State ($376k). Salary info not available for Kevin Wilson (Tulsa), Manny Diaz (Duke), Bill O'Brien (Boston College), Kalani Sitake (BYU), Jon Sumrall (Tulane), Fran Brown (Syracuse), Troy Taylor (Stanford), David Braun (Northwestern) and Troy Calhoun (Air Force). Berkowtiz and the USA Today crew do an outstanding job on this every year, see the full run down via this link.
