  1. I spent 2 months in Germany and I was amazed at the lack of accidents I saw, even considering the unlimited speeds on some stretches of the autobahn. The German culture of safety and compliance and generally not driving like an asshole goes a long way over there.
  2. I admittedly don't know much about the workings of a barge, but now that they know where they are, can't they just toss a rope to one and drag it to shore?
  3. I told my wife I'm not going to bed until these barges blast into these locks. It's been over an hour since they were supposed to hit, but no one can find them now. I'm about to go find them myself to I can go to sleep.
  4. Thanks again for the explanation. At the end of the day, what I'm looking for a way differentiate the strength of a mesocyclone or TVS versus another. Given all the parameters that I can see on this app, which one is the best indicator of a tornado? Based on what you've said, it seems like the higher the LLRV/LLDV, the higher the shear value, and the higher the strength index, the stronger the rotation and the greater chance for a tornado. If true, this seems pretty straight forward. Going back to Storm Relative Depth for a minute, does a storm with a 100% SRD vs. one with a 50% have a higher chance for a tornado? Or is SRD just more of a geez whiz type info that really isn't a great tornado indicator?
  5. I can hear that little fucker from here
  6. I can't rep this enough. Thanks for the explanation...which of course leads to some follow up questions in which you can politely tell me to STFU if you wish. 1. With the LLDV, since this is a delta, with a number like 108kts in the example above, does this mean that the max winds within the column of air are way above 108kts? Or is it possible that the max could be 109kts and the min 1kt, hence the 108kt delta? Also, since you're saying the more shear, the more likely a tornado, in general, can you say the higher LLRV, LLDV, and MRV are, the more likely a tornado, and/or the greater chance for a strong tornado? Is there one value that is more indicative of a tornado than others? I think I'm tracking that MRV + LLRV = LLDV? 2. With the storm relative depth, you say the % is the total distance from the inflow to the max shear point, and that a higher % means a greater potential for a tornado. However, wouldn't a low % mean a lower-level shear point (altitude wise) which might indicate more instability on the surface? 3. On my first post on the previous page, I included a TVS readout. One of the parameters is max shear (measured in m/s/km) and height of max shear. Is there a scale for max shear? What's considered a lot? Also, if you look at that read out, the Height of Max Delta Velocity, storm base, and Height of Max Shear are all at 1.9K feet. Does this mean the maximum shear is right at the cloud base? This kind of ties into my second question about the "ideal" altitude for shear. What's worse: high altitude or low altitude shear?
  7. @phdhorn Here's the parameters of a mesocyclone. Can you explain the "storm relative depth", "strength index" and what triggers a TVS true/false?
  8. @phdhorn I've had the Radar Scope app for a couple years and use the velocity tilt often to check out the wind speeds and direction to try to spot rotation, so I have a handle on that. However, can you explain to me some of the parameters shown in the pic here. I mean, most of them seem self explanatory, but at what point does someone smart look at these numbers and say oh shit this is serious? I know what a TVS is, and it seems the max delta velocity it just basically the max wind speed within the rotation? What about the shear numbers? What else would a trained meteorologist or storm chaser be looking at?
  9. That sounds like an 8th grader wrote it. Please tell me the author isn't a professional pilot.
  10. My wife and I still quote this to this day. Chappelle is a god damn genius.
  11. I haven't kicked anyone off my plane, but I have told more than one passenger to "sit down and shut the fuck up".
  12. Looks like every other retractable roof stadium in the league. Can't at least throw in a home run porch or something?
  13. This is the conclusion I have drawn. Happy hooking, boys.
  14. Before we go sucking each other's dicks, keep in mind the M's had a 2nd baseman pitching at one point last night. But yes, getting 2 convincing wins on the road is a nice surprise.
  15. We need to get younger but that's damn near impossible with our cap situation. I'd bring Rudy back on a MLE (unless there is a better, younger option, too lazy to research), try to off load Marco and Patty for pennies on the dollar, and pray Dejounte is worth a few more wins.
  16. I switched from beer to Tito's at halftime and thought I had done it, until Pop decided to retire with 30 seconds left. Fuck this shit.
  17. Hedging against Connor or backup for Travis in case his AIDS flares up?
  18. Wut? Sounds like a normal 3 degree glide path to me.
  19. A couple weeks ago, the family and I were driving from Abilene to SA, and decided to take some back roads to see wildflowers and whatnot. We stopped just north of Castell, where 2768 goes over the Llano River, and decided to get out and walk around the river bed. I am always on the lookout for sneks, and I knew on this warm spring day that they would probably be hiding under rocks or in some other shade. We are walking on the rocks on the west side of the bridge when a guy with his family on the east side of the bridge yells "Holy shit!". So I ask what he found and he says a snek under a rock. We continue our picture taking, rock collecting, and head back up to the bridge a few minutes later. At this point, the guy has walked down to the General Store, and fetched the owner who is now walking back with a 12-gauge. He sees the snek, about 5 yards from the bridge, and blasts it with a single shot, which cuts it in half. And that was the vacation that started with a Cottonmouth getting shot in half about 20 feet from my 3 kids, all under 7. Texas, fuck yeah.
  20. I don't think I'll ever be able to top this year if I went again. I can't possibly think of a better story line unless Tiger loses an arm in a car accident then goes on to win major #19 to pass Jack. That won't stop me from trying to go every year though.
  21. Well, it might have been the best weekend of my life. There's too much to type so I'll just copy and paste my post from FB: "I can't truly put into works the experience of attending the Masters. Walking through the gates, seeing the emblematic scoreboard on the first fairway, the serene tee box on two, the elevation drop on six, the magnolia tree on 10 that Bubba curved his approach around to win in 2012, the pine straw that Lefty hit out of on 13 to win in 2010, and the Sunday hole location on 16 that has shaped so many wins and losses throughout the years. On top of that, I got to witness arguably the most iconic athlete since Jordan winning his 5th Masters 22 years after his first, after so many people had written him off. The atmosphere at Augusta National with Tiger in contention is indescribable. No matter where you are on the 345-acre course, you know when Tiger hit a remarkable shot as the roars echo through the pines like thunder. This weekend was one I'll never forget and one I'll be talking about until the day I die. Just bury me in this hat" :wearing Masters hat in pic: That pretty much sums it up. I lucked into weekend passes so we saw the 3rd and final rounds. The first day we took our time, hit the gift shop on the way in, so by the time we walked out to the course it was after 9AM, so all the good chair spots were taken. We ended up setting up on the 17th tee box and then walked the course. I followed Jordan for the second nine. Spent some time in the bleachers on 12, fairway on 13, and bleachers on 15. On Sunday, we got up earlier, and were able to get about 5th row on the 16th green with a great vantage point. They don't serve beer until 11AM on Sunday, but fortunately we had some suite passes with a full bar. Had a Tito's in hand by 8AM and walked the course. We spent a lot of time on the 2nd tee box and that might be my new favorite spot on the front nine. We were on the side with the wall and you're so close to the players that you can reach out and touch them. On the groupings with no notable players, we were literally the only patrons at the tee box. We could heard all the player-caddie and player-player convos. Got to hear them cut up, make fun of each other's drives, and drop F bombs. Definitely a different experience than on TV, and it was surreal that we were at the Masters and were the only people on a given hole. We ended up back at our chairs on 16 right after Justin Thomas' ace, so we missed both that day. Ended up watching the last 7 groups come through. The Tiger effect is real. The electricity in the air when he is on a hole is unreal. And to top it off his shot on 16 sealed the victory for him. 10/10. Would experience again.
  22. Really wanted the Rockets but will take the Nugs. The last two times we started the playoffs with the Nuggets, we won the championship.
  23. The Shed is the new hotness for BBQ. It's open 11-6 or until they run out of meat. Stillwater is my #2 for BBQ. Sharon's is a distant #3. There's a new Hooters on the north side that's stumbling distance to a lot of the hotels on I-20. Not sure how old you are, but if you're under 40 and have a taste for surprisingly good looking, north-central Texas white trash, Guitars and Cadillacs has college night on Thursdays. You may think you're better than this, but you're not, and you should go. It's the best nightlife scene of any night in Abilene. The brew scene sucks here, but Pappy Sloakum and Sockdolager are decent. If you're into cougars, The Mill is your spot. Thursday night is steak night. They usually have live music too. This place is mostly outside and is made up of tables and gazebos, so not really a sit at the bar for hours type of place. The Beehive is downtown, makes a good burger, and is known for the Long Island Ice Teas. La Popular has bomb ass breakfast tacos. Go there. Don't pay attention to the people bagging on Jags. It's not the worst strip club in town.
