Is Game Day in Eugene? How the hell is he going to get from Oregon to Dallas and through that traffic to the game by 2:30?

I'm kinda confused on this too. Gameday ends at 11:00 CT. Let's say he has a police escort to the tarmac and can get wheels up by 11:30 CT. Eugene to Dallas is about 3 hours. That already puts him at landing at 2:30 CT? Even if kickoff is actually at 2:45 that seems almost impossible.

Any recs for car companies to/from JFK? General price?

Wife got stuck flying in to there based on flight windows

Are you opposed to Uber.com for some reason? $100 ballpark. Expect a long walk in JFK and an hour car ride.

  3. I loved the original Speak No Evil, and was very skeptical of the American remake. I thought they did a pretty good job. Definitely nowhere near as horrific as the original, but still a good flick.

Edited to remove whiff of a spoiler for those who care

Not sure he’d incite a riot. They’re in different categories. I abhor Cruz. Our daughters go to the same camp so I’m exposed to him for a day every summer. He’s very aloof and is basically a fat dork. One of his daughters got booted from the camp a few years ago because she’s fucked up. I give Cruz credit for not making a big stink about it, or pulling his other daughter from camp. I fully expected him to do both.

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I agree with Rex. Cruz is a piece of shit no doubt, but I probably wouldn’t have legitimate concern that he would launch a war if somebody tweets something mean about him. Hell, we already know you can trash his wife and he’ll roll over like a bitch.

Shaya was canceled years ago and Revolution is irrelevant. Get a rez for Saint Germain, the most ambitious restaurant in the city, or Saffron or Mamou at the bar. Or if you want to go old school, Clancy’s at the bar. Make friends with Garth. Peche at the bar remains fantastic. Nowadays that is my rotation when I go home. Have only been to Dakar in his earlier, much more casual iterations but really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the recs. Nothing available at Mamou and only a 9:30 at Saint Germain, so decided to go with 8pm at Dakar. Will see if I can squeeze in a second meal on Sunday.

Went to Shaya last week... feels like it's fallen off a bit. I'd recommend MaMou, which was the best meal of the trip. You need a reso, but you can make one for the bar. Great food/service/vibe.

Thanks, will look into. Friend of mine also just recommended Dakar. Looks awesome. My only hesitation is the non-refundable $200 charge at time of booking

  7. I have a solo dinner night in New Orleans in late October. Looking for recs for upscale/upscale-ish place (preferably with dinner service at a bar/counter seating, tho not a must). Thinking something like Shaya or R'evolution, but those are pretty established now so wondering if Surly has any other recs.

I hated on Broughton for his first three years here. He was soft and stood straight up out of his stance way too often. But he noticeably improved last year, and has continued that trend this year. The hardest thing to evaluate from outside the program is work ethic and effort. This dude’s obviously been killing it in those areas. He’s also a good reminder that experience and seniority is usually more important along the LOS than talent/star ranking (with the rare exceptions like Collin Simmons).

This is me. I thought he was a pure JAG, and then the spring game thing was really weird. But he’s been really good this year. Impressive stuff

Well our trip usual pre-Thanksgiving trip just became a trip that includes a 2.5 year old. We know what to do when it's just us, but what is there to do with a kid that age in late November?

Central Park Zoo (weather dependent) is good for a kid that age because it's in the middle of Manhattan (less travel time) and it's a very confined loop, so by the time your kid has entirely lost interest and/or is melting down, you are done and can get back to your hotel quickly.  The usual suggestion for kids would be American Museum of Natural History. I don't think you will make it long with a 2 year old, so just be ready to miss quite a bit.

I have an almost two year old, but I live in the west village downtown so all of my other suggestions are tied to the west side of lower Manhattan.

In that area, assuming weather is nice and you are sufficiently dressed, you could stroll your kid around the Little Island and then, when they get antsy, take them a 10 minute walk down to the playground at Pier 51. This is also close to the Chelsea Market (indoors and stroller friendly) and Whitney Museum (indoors and stroller friendly, but obviously depends on your kid's tolerance for adult stuff - maybe Pier 51 after Whitney).  The lowest High Line entrance is also right there and is stroller friendly.

There are a surprising number of good restaurants that are kid friendly in the 5:00-7:00 dinner window. Meaning, they have high chairs and won't treat you like a pariah.  Don't expect a Texas-style kids menu, but if you want actual good food and not shit food in midtown, suggestions include: (1) Barbuto (we eat here once a week at least); (2) Pastis; (3) Anton's; and (4) Locanda Verde, which is farther downtown in TriBeca. All of those are also good lunch options. Pretty sure Locanda Verde does a Thanksgiving lunch if that is something you need.  I have plenty of other suggestions (again, mostly in the West Village and TriBeCa), just PM me if you need more help.

Breweries are also great for kids and adults, but all of those are in Brooklyn. If you want to venture that way, I can give suggestions.

Good restaurant recs in the midtown area?  Would like to take him to a good dinner.  Maybe Italian, but open to others.

Thinking midtown so we're close to Penn Station to jump the train to New Brunswick to see the UCLA/Rutgers game.

For Italian near Penn, I think Ci Siamo in Hudson Yards is by far the best answer. It’s more upscale than red sauce. Need a reservation in advance.

Also plus one for Keen’s if you are trying to be close to the Penn Station area. Sure it’s a little touristy but I still try to go once a year with buddies. Not a god damn thing wrong with two martinis and a mutton chop.

W/R/T JFK to midtown, personally I always take a car, but if you are set on a train you can definitely take the AirTran to Jamaica and grab any number of LIRR trains into Penn/Moynihan Hall. It won’t save you time. By far the better option would be to fly into Newark or LaGuardia. Fuck JFK

They were plenty loud on the 1st drive.  They got quiet when they started getting their ass kicked.  Like every crowd.

Yep, it was really, really loud that first possession before reality started to set in. Between our missed kick and their first offensive possession, the Michigan guy beside me said it was among the loudest crowds he's heard at the big house. Things changed quickly.
