  1. I don't know how many bowhunters we have here but this season I'm making the switch to mechanicals. Picked up some Wasp Jakhammers as they seemed to be a good no-frills expandable. I've always shot fixed blades and have had good results but just curious what y'all's experience is with mechs.

I have used Rages and they leave great blood trails... If you make a good shot.

On the flip side, I lost a monster buck because of the mechanical nature of the Rage. Shot a tad high, hit shoulder bone, no penetration, arrow came back out after a few yards. Tracked buck for 300 yds, called out tracking dog, everything. Never found it. Likely survived. Tracker said 90% of lost bucks were due to high lung shot with mechanical broadheads.

In contrast, last year I shot a big buck with fixed blade, missed a little high, but the arrow penetrated and severed the spine. Buck dropped right there and died.

So, in conclusion, if you make a good shot, mechanical broadheads are awesome. But if you miss, you have small margin for error vs fixed that can blow through bone much easier.
  2. For the record I have no idea what the store is, maybe someone is nice and will pm
I hear you. I remember it being mentioned here in the thread (or maybe on the old site), just forget the name.
  3. My buddy told me Sam Houston 14 sold out in about 3 hours at his local store. MGP hype isn’t Weller hype, but it’s getting there.
Found this in the wild today. Looking forward to cracking it. 9a8ca00f1cbe7c4c2ce05784eff0662d.jpg

  4. I haven’t followed this very closely. Suppose I only want to take one ski trip this year and ski 3 days. Is there a good place I can do that without buying a full Epic or Ikon pass?

If I had my choice I would be interested in Big Sky or Telluride, but willing to consider other options.
Crested Butte. Minimal crowds, awesome mountain.

  5. My son (10 yrs old) is going to try to stick a deer (or pig) with an arrow this season. Neither of us have ever bow hunted.
We went out this weekend (Austin County) and brushed in a pop-up ground blind near the intersection of 2 game trails that is also near a corner of a food plot we hunt annually. Our cameras near the location catch the traffic often. We have hunted this plot with a rifle and have seen many deer enter and exit the field from this corner. So we feel decent about that. We cut shooting lanes and practiced shots through the blind windows between 7 and 15 yards.
For those of you that bow hunt from pop-up/ground blinds - Do you wear camo or black? I'm assuming we need to wear black and black out our faces since the inside of the blind is black. I figure we open as few windows as possible so we don't get back lit. The blind has shoot-through mesh on the windows, but I'm not sure if we should leave those up since he's shooting low poundage (~35 lbs) draw weight. Most of our hunts will be evening hunts due to sports and church commitments on weekend mornings. How long before sunset do you guys get in the blind?
    Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Definitely wear black. Long sleeve if possible. Black face mask or paint as well. Evening hunts, set up with sun at your back if possible.

Other tips: no squeaky chairs, swivel is best so you can move slightly without moving your body. Don't use mesh windows. Only keep front windows open, and try to pin them up in the corners to make opening smaller. The key is to block out as much light as possible. Sit in the very back of the blind so you are invisible.
