  1. Late in the Pacific campaign my uncle Sage Johnston was flying a carrier based Dauntless when a Zero kamikazied him and his gunner down into the Pacific. He survived the kamikaze and was picked up by a patrol boat. Unfortunately for him it was flying the rising sun. He spent the rest of the war in Tokyo at Ohana prison, a vety bad place. He witnessed the random beheading of American officers. Later he returned to Tokyo and testified on behalf of some of the kinder and more humane guards. A photo of him and a few other US POWs from the liberation of Ohana survives - He looked like death on a cracker. About 90 pounds on a 6’1” frame. He suffered from beei beti and was routinely beaten by guards and tortured by suspending him backeard from his elbows high on a wall from a bamboo pole. Sage was from Boligee, Alabama and lived well into his 80s. Sage’s remains rest about fifty yards downhill from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington. I was privileged to draft and probate his last will and testament and to witness the inurnment ceremony on a chilly, breezy, cloudless day in November, 2014. I gotta say, the air was rather dusty that day. Sage treated each day like Christmas Eve and suffered no fools. Makes sense. He did NOT talk about the war as a rule but would pipe up if you asked an intelligent question. After the war, he met a beautiful lady from Rennes in Brittany, she a veteran of the French Resistance, and they married and had three boys together, Sage, Derrick and Brett. He flew for PanAm for many years iin the 50s and 60s. He told me he and many of the other Navy prisoners at Ohana wanted to shank a fellow prisoner trusty who gave out their meager ration of food each day. He had mastered the art of dropping tidbits of meat and rice into the knee pockets of his flight suit (prisoners wore what they eere captured in) as he brought out a platter of food. Sage said the guards knew he was doing it but didn’t care.

  7. That was right before he loanded Michael Douglas his hairstyle
  8. “All the sudden, . . .” followed closely by “All of the sudden, . . .”; phrases which no one ever wrote, read or said until the 70s. Now these spoken phrases are showing up on local news and happy talk segues and any podcast. I’ve yet to see either in actual print. Please, just make it stop.

    Getting old sucks

And so it begins. Better save all of your passwords and PINs in an encrypted document and save the password into that document in a different encrypted document . . . Ahh, fuck it.
  10. 1969 Nixon =~= 2024 Trump? To quote the Fugs: ”It’s four minutes to twelve and there’s a madman at the wheel.”
  11. Tonight . . . whe shaell inta hischtaddeh.
  12. Attorney Woo Outstanding, addictive, fabulous lead
  13. I detest OSU but they just picked up a decent safety from the portal, freshman all-American Caleb Downs. And the rb from Ole Miss, Judkins, was another good pickup.
  14. Huh. Well I did see that but it looked like a heavy dump truck with a .50 cal mounted in the in the bed. My powers of observation are slipping. Thx
  15. Loved the wrap up to this season, other than Whit dying because he let Roy get too close, like being within striking range of a pit viper. One question - didn't Roy's army have some sort of APC or half track? If so, where was it when the defecation hit the ventilation? The "sheriff election debate" moderator, prior to being punched, specifically quizzed him on that point before Roy stormed off after the three clones began mocking him. I kept waiting for it to zoom up out of a hidden trench. Dot, Wayne, Scotty and the poison eater need some kind of follow up. AS grotesque as he is, that guy is riveting when he speaks. Jeez
  16. DeBoer did very well at u dub without having a raft of blue chip recruits. They were something like #25 in recruits landed over last five years. Bama locker room may be a mess, but the cupboard isn’t bare. So, there’s that. He may exceed Surly expectations if not that of ADD delusional Bama fans. His coach coronation is today at 1pm. I hope he’s breaking down UGA defenses in his mind today. We shall see. I have no assumptions.
  17. If he goes burnt orange, he goes and I wish him well. He (and Milroe) snatched defeat fron the slavering jaws of a zillion Aubie mouths, and for that I shall revere him forever. Sark will target him (and get it to him) 5x more than we were able to do. At this point, I’m just relieved Dabo or Rees weren’t named. Keep calm and carry on.
  18. Isaiah Bond (the Auburn killer wr) has entered the portal. He did this before the DeBoer hire was announced. Dumbass. Jesus. Well, at least we didn’t fart around “searching” for an eternity. The GOAT is gone; long live the new coach. May he have great success. If he doesn’t the attention deficit mob will run him, the AD and the UA president / system chancellor out of town on a rail.
  19. I am assuming Quinn Ewers reups with Texas. Given that every offensive play other than some sort of red zone wildcat begins with the quarterback, no other team even approaches Texas with (for now) Quinn Ewers at QB1 and Arch Manning at QB2. And the man calling the plays is no amateur either. 2024 playoffs will prominently feature the Texas Longhorns, with their ceiling #1. Over/under on losses - 1.5.
  20. So, I get 9-1 odds on Texas and 6-1 on Bama to win the national championship? Hell, man, I’d bet 10-1 a pissant (pronounced “piss-aynt”) could eat a bale of hay! Give me both for $100!
  21. “Way too early” is right but who wants to wait on speculation? I’m seeing Texas deflowering the Big House with Arch Manning mopping up with a couple of TDs. I see Alabama making the playoff and advancing, provided we discover a college football player who can consistently snap a football accurately to his quarterback. As Prophet exclaimed in The Hallelujah Trail after knocking back a swig of good whiskey, “There! Now I see it! Hook ‘Em and RTR. Fuck the others, especially OU and Alldumb!
  22. Not unkike Bryce Young going to the Panthers. QB graveyard since Cam (spit) Newton. Surprised he has survived with no protection.
  23. The Times was once a good source of college football in depth journalism. Sigh. I’m watching anyway. SIAP - didn’t see it elsewhere. Delete this thread with my blessing. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/31/us/college-athletes-nil-sugar-rose-bowl.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
  24. Much obliged. Fowler and Herbstreit aren’t bad but they’re obsessed with jumping on the right bandwagon and speculating about when Nick’s hanging it up. Hope ‘24 is to your liking.
