  1. Most of Hooper was filmed in and around my hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. My wife attend the extras call daily but unfortunately was never picked. She did have lunch at a table where Robert Klein, who played the asshole director of the film within a film, was also dining. She said he was an absolute prince of a guy, a Manhattan comic among drawling Southerners. He was engaging and hilarious at times, as you might expect, and most gracious about autograph requests. One day when nothing much was going on, Buddy Joe Hooker gave my wife a thrilling ride on a powerful Harley along the course of the big destruction explosion-a-ganza scene. I got the feeling she was rather stimulated by the experience of wrapping her arms around Buddy Joe's velvet ribs, as the Boss sang. The shoot took twice as long as planned because it was done in January and February when he weather was rotten, wet and cold 80% of the time. Original title was The Hollywood Stuntman before changed to Hooper, I suppose as a hopeful homage to channel the panache of better films such as Hud, Harper and Hombre.
  2. https://www.al.com/auburnfootball/2021/10/lacking-transparency-bryan-harsin-puts-auburn-in-limbo.html Still and all, his team is playing better and better ball. Guaranteed, they will be a serious test for Alabama come Iron Bowl time. Just the same, fuck Auburn. Punt block TDx2 and field goal returning TD assholes. Ole Miss at Auburn this weekend. Should be very interesting.
  3. "No gas - no squeegee" guy's next customer should be Javier Bardem, only this time the call on the coin flip is wrong.
  4. Well, that sucked but I'm not complaining. I've seen a shitload of defeats snatched from the jaws of victory and vice versa in my 70 years. No Bama fan should ever complain after Tua-to-Devonta on 2nd and 26 snatched a NC from the slavering jowls of UGA a few years back. Last night Aggy deserved to win. Whipped our asses three quarters out of four. Too many fuckups to overcome. It still sucks but ob-la-di, ob-la-da, and on we go.
  5. I'm turning seventy this weekend and I love college football, especially in person. I've been going to Bama games since the late 1950s. I saw Colt go down in 2010 and actually was disappointed when it happened because I wanted the game to be a good one. As you know, it was a helluva game. With five minutes left it was a three point game and the Horns were one Shipley catch away from overtime or winning, until the blind side sack fumble. This move by Texas, Oklahoma and the SEC is outstanding. I'm most pleased and amazed at how quickly it went to full orgasm. This shit will go much better if visiting fans just keep an open mind, get good and high, lay back, enjoy themselves and leave the sociocultural biases the fuck at home. Tomatillo provided a decent, albeit subjective sketch above. The schools and fans are evolving in unpredictable directions. This will be one cool journey, with plenty of unexpected surprises. As Spinal Tap drummer Viv always said, "Have a GOOD time ALL the time."
  6. Darwin Award Trump Toffee-Noser Candidate #743 He called coronavirus a “scam-demic” and now Dick Farrel is dead of the disease. The former Newsmax commentator and veteran radio host died of COVID-19 complications at age 65 last Wednesday. On one of his many inflammatory social media posts, the outspoken anti-vaxxer famously called the country’s leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci a “power-tripping lying freak.” As recently as last month, Farrel posted on Facebook, “Why take a vax promoted by people who lied 2 u all along about masks, where the virus came from and the death toll?”
  7. When FSU had little talent or clout Bobby bootstrapped the program into national pos rep by scheduling road games against powerhouses and eventually winning most of them on and off campus. Good on yer and hope the afterlife is good for you.
  8. I thought it was, but not according to The Atlantic. I guess they know what myths they are exploding. Kind of disappointing, and I thought it was "I have never wished anyone dead, etc." Learn something every day. Too bad Mr. Apley didn't.
  9. "I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction." Clarence Darrow
  10. Ohhh, yes! The "GEEEE-NO!'s" rang out like "AIIRRRRR BALL's" early and often, and grew stronger through the night, the more he stuggled. Do you remember coming out of a timeout he trotted onto the field and stood facing the offense, calling the play Erickson gave him. As he was calling the play Bama substituted several players. When Geno turned around and stood back in the shotgun, all eleven defenders were on the line of scrimmage. Six or seven of them blitzed. Can't remember the result but the body language from Toretta was clear. "Ohhhh, fuuuuck!" And, we all saw in the flesh the greatest non-play in college football history when George Teague stripped the ball from Lamar Thomas and came back the other way.
  11. John Lennon sang "Just gimme some truth." Well, here it is. The "S-E-C, S-E-C!" chant was born in an instant on the night Alabama humiliated Geno Toretta and Miami 34-13 in the Sugar Bowl to top off the 1992 season. Most Miami fans had left the Dome. About five minutes remained in the 4th quarter and some one or some group started it up. It spread fast and before ling the 50,000 or so Bama fans were yelling and stomping it out in unison. I was there. I heard it and I saw it and I said it with gusto. We were sick to death of hearing about Miami and their unstoppable offense. As far as I'm concerned it was an isolated event of regional resentment spilling onto the field. The origin of a behavior which may appear offensive or shitty today is completely logical in context. Did I chant S-E-C! when Auburn scammed their way to #1, or LSU, or Tennessee back in the 90s? Fuuuuck, no. With all that said, do I like Texas and OU joining the SEC? Why hell, yes. Because I love college football! Let's rock and roll!
  12. Agreed. This guy must, repeat MUST be included.
  13. This is a watershed moment and I am glad to be a witness. Long live Thujone. Please, man, hit us with more of this when you get the vibe. Of such stuff life is made.
  14. I'd go on tour with the Commitmentettes any time. If you were ever in a garage band, hauled your own equipment to and from gigs and appreciate soul music, this the best. Yeah, I'm an ancient "Old" but I know what I like. Plus, Colm Meaney nails the Old Fart Elvis fan, nails it!
  15. Sir Ridley to agent: Hallo, Cedric? Yes, fine, fine. Listen, find us a winter gig in France involving at least six medieval chateaux, stylized armor, bizarre political shit and (taps index finger on cigar case). . . oh yeah, Affleck and Damon. Right! Off you go, there's a good agent! Cedric the Agent: Why?
  16. Yes, I did know that and it only made me desire her beautiful bones all the more. And that fantastic voice. But maybe not so happy younger years. I imagine she was referring to her parents when she sang, "My father sits at night with no lights on His cigarette glows in the dark. The living room is still; I walk by, no remark. I tiptoe past the master bedroom where My mother reads her magazines. I hear her call sweet dreams, But I forgot how to dream." But I digress
  17. Football - terrible, band good. I attended RIce from 1969-72. Man, we even cheered first downs. A favorite chant we yelled with gusto after a fumble, interception, missed extra point, failed fourth down and similar FUBAR type plays, which occurred all too often, was this: "oooooooOOOOH SHIT! GOD DAMN!" Lots of students left at half time, which was usually the high point of a Rice football game because the band was so fucking hilarious. At halftime of a Rice-Houston game in the early 70s, the PA guy announced, as the band tried to form the outline of the Astrodome, "The Marching Owl Band salutes Judge Roy Hofheinz and the Houston Astrodome, the WORLD'S SMALLEST INDOOR FOOTBALL STADIUM!" at which point Hofheinz himself, whose box was nearby, stormed into the PA booth and yanked the mic and cord out of the wall and chased the PA guy out. The MOB carried on sans narration. Empty seats are nothing new. Rice Stadium was filled for only two games in the three years I was a student there: Texas in 1970 (LBJ was there, along with 55,000 Texas students and fans) and LSU in one or two of those years. I remember seeing Rice torch the VMI Keydets 55-0. We had some memorable wins over Aggie, one in particular I recall in Aggieland in which Rice was trailing at the half, did not make a first down in the second half and somehow won the game. The Rice OWl mascot dude had a sign pasted to his ass, covered by his tail feathers. He would strut from section to section, waving at the fans, then would bend over, flip up his tail and show the sign, which read, in block print same font as Aggie helmets, "EATME." The guys in khaki pelted him with cups and ice, just did not understand the sporting humor. Great link to Rice band adventures: https://www.texastribune.org/2016/09/19/five-other-times-rices-marching-band-made-people-m/ Direct quote from the link: During a 1973 game against Texas A&M, Rice’s marching band made fun of several Aggie traditions. The band marched out to the field in a military-style goose-step and turned the Aggie War Hymn into "March of the Wooden Soldiers.” The band also made fun of Texas A&M’s school mascot, the dog Reveille, by forming a fire hydrant. An angry group of Texas A&M students gathered outside Rice’s stadium, and the band eventually had to be transported out via food service trucks. The performance has since been dubbed “The Halftime of Infamy.” In fairness to the Owls athletics of that era, in 1971 (70? 72?) Rice was #1 in the SWC in every sport but football. So, we had that going for us for one year anyway.
  18. 1. In "Yesterday," when the door opens and there stands John Lennon. Man, that was as powerful as anything I've ever seen in a theater. Keep in mind I came of age in the 60s and have always revered the Beatles, problems and all. I was watching MNF when Cosell stopped the world turning as he informed the world of John's killing. I know it was fantasy but the spoiler had never been revealed, thus it was stronnng juju. 2. Multiple scenes in "Fargo." I'm in awe of the visuals and music in the opening credits. I crack up when Margie interviews the Bear Lake girls. Lundegard is so squemish and nerdy he is a pleasure to watch, as in a monkey with a hand grenade, you can't stop watching. The old gent shoveling snow being interviewed by the deputy, "He says, "We're dyin out here at the lake,' so I says 'What do ya want ME to do about it?' " and do on. Love me some Fargo.
  19. A perfect clinical image of a nation in the midst of acute anal prolapse following sutures after jamming the prolapse back into T(he)RUMP, right there in the middle.
  20. Alien / Blade Runner / Twilight Zone episode with giant alien human-looking farm couple, tiny astronauts and US Air Force saucer in attic / War of the Worlds (both) / Contact / Arrival / The Time Machine (both) / Barbarella / Flash Gordon / 1970s original Star Wars whatever TF its actual name is
  21. Agree 100% but my comment was not about guardians or conservators. The proof bar's lower for a "person alleged to be in need of protection." The remedy is not a court supervised ongoing case, but a trust.
  22. The Green Leaves of Summer from soundtrack whiz Dimitri Tiomkin. The staff car creeping slowly up the hill to this music took me right back to 1960 and another throat grabber (same song/tune). Saludos, mis amigos de Texas!
  23. NIL deals will put states' Protected Persons laws to the test. In protected person cases, the petitioner does not have to prove a lack of mental capacity. These typically originate in probate court; if a petitioner shows that the "person alleged to be in need of protection" is unable to manage their money or other property because they're dependent on drugs or alcohol, a spendthrift, susceptible to undue influence, or just a hapless dumbass, the judge can literally impose a trust out of thin air and appoint a trustee to administer the PATBINOP's assets and income. This action usually arises just before a doofus, druggie, alkie, or easily-led patsy inherits a truckload of cash or securities, and the PR/executor who has been dealing with the person for months or years takes action to prevent "entourage predation" and waste. There are parallels in the coming storm of NIL deals. Probate Court is about to get even more interesting, as will the upstream removals to higher courts and appeals. Hooefully, in the end, the young people actually WILL be protected.
  24. The "Play 'La Marseillaise' -- PLAY IT!" scene in Casablanca adrenalizes me like no other moment in cinema, this one in particular: Aux arms, citoyens! Armez vos batallions! Fuckin Nazi assholes.
