  1. And he thought coaching football was tough. A lecture hall full of spoiled, sneering millenials and MacBooks will be tough. He hasn't exactly dazzled from behind the podium this year. Whose idea was this shit, anyway?
  2. Blood Simple, the Coens debut (1984). Awesomely small and so fucking good. Frances Macdormand as the horny wife of a mean, grumpy ass older guy (Dan Hedaya) who owns a bar and hires a salty old whiny asshole of a private eye (M. Emmett Walsh) to kill her. Enter her dumbass boyfriend who wants in the bar safe and all unravels. Heads are bashed. Bodies are buried, but. Snipers snipe. Exquisite.
  3. I am not that metric savvy but I know this. When UGA is in 3rd and 6+ Texas had better watch out for three players - Nauta, Swift and Ridley.
  4. Joyeux Noel (2005), about 1914 Christmas Eve and enemies spontaneously sharing drinks and songs and across battle lines, is nicely done with a fine cast, including the comely Diane Kruger. Nominated for oscar - best foreign film.
  5. Ruby Sue and Clark in the kitchen scene always chokes me up. And Clark freezing and crying stuck up in the attic watching home movies wearing a lady's robe and turban is a nice sentimental Christmasy make-the-best-of-things grace note.
  6. "On this lonely road, tryin ta make it home . . ." Shit they had me from the first chord of that dobro. The fantastic series was a wonderful surprise. Did a pretty good job of making SoCal look like Eastern Kentucky. The Elmore Leonard actual and EL-inspired dialogue was Coenesque (or was it the other way around?). Anyway, send us more like Deadwood, Justified, No Country For Old Men and True Grit (2010).
  7. That jibes because the diner owner/cook Mel (Vic Tayback) was I believe portraying a former Navy cook.
  8. I hope her soul passes "near Mexico" on its way to eternal peace. Need us more like Penny in this ole verldt.
  9. Finished it tonight. Well worth watching. This fucker wrote Animal House _and_ Caddyshack.
  10. A Futile and Stupid Gesture, about the life of Doug Kenney and the launch of the National Lampoon. Watched the first 40 minutes this morning. As the guy who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge said on his way to the East River, "So far, so good." Nicely captures the early 70s and Lampoon look and feel.
  11. Mmmmmmmm. Phoebe Cates, eternally in slow motion emerging from the pool, then looking around and declaring, without inhibition, "Y'allllll - ah'm waaaald."
  12. I can't hear that tune without flashing back to, "Yogi is smarter than the average bear, Yogi is always in the Ranger's hair, etc." Kind of chills the martial grandiosity. Disclaimer - to those under fifty who don't know who the fuck Yogi is or how the Aggie War Hymn to pomposity is related, never mind.
  13. He has nothing like the explosive burst that Ricky did in his prime but Derrick Henry is anything but slow. Big Ricky fan here - the college game needs more of his Rickyness, a kind and gentle man who will run over, around or through your ass.
  14. Last of the Mohicans (1992 version). Wes Studi and Daniel Day-Lewis, the whole cast, really. Steve Waddington as the British officer shot by Day-Lewis before being burned alive played an asshole you felt respect for in the end. Actors portraying the British and French commanding generals were superb.
  15. Yep, that was two years later. Namath on a bad knee vs Tommy Nobis, Ernie Koy, George Sauer and company. Horns had two 80-yard TDs. Horns were up 21-7 at the half. Joe ran a qb sneak on 4th goal from the 1 late in the 4th quarter, Bama trailing 21-17. The right side linesman with a great view signaled TD and the gotdammed motherfuckin summuvabitchin back judge came running in from the back of the end zone waving it off. Ball game. Namath came to the sideline telling Bryant he was over, that the whole football was in the end zone! Bryant told Joe he needed to get his whole ass in the end zone and remove all doubt. Point being, no one beat anyone's ass in that game, but the Horns got the win, I'll grant you that. I fucking hate games turning on a single bad call late. Joe signed with the Jets in the dressing room after that game for a $400,000 bonus, unheard of in those days.
  16. Over under is 80 1/2 last I saw. Paper clips +15 and the under look pretty good. Tua's normally bat-radar accuracy is off when he can't push off on his right leg and he is gimpier than ever (high ankle sprain + surgical procedure on his right ankle, left ankle sprain, knee still somewhat sore) and on top of all this he's been holding the ball too long. Hurts is an X factor. Ewok will scramble around and OU will score enough to beat the line, if not win outright. Crowd will be 75/25 OU. Success-spoiled Tide fans won't show up in big numbers. Neutral fans will whoop it up big for the upset if we have another shitty first half, which has been a trend last few games. As a Bama fan I am definitely not confident. Maybe we can channel the Orange Bowl of 1/1/63. Bama skunked OU and Joe Don Looney 17-0. Lee Roy Jordan had 30 individual tackles. QB was some yankee kid named Namath.
  17. Flick? Flick who?
  18. I'd like to see Peter Jackson's take on The Legend of Zelda. I'd pay money to see a good adaptation of the whole Zelda story / look / music schmeer.
  19. 1. I'm thinking he will be teaching the Insurgent Warfare course from the point of view of the insurgents. 2. The leg lamp takes the cake. 3. Mike Leach is Muddy the Mudskipper and I am Stimpson J. Cat. 4. My Army Air Corps WW2 vet dad would not "cotton" to Mike Leach.
  20. Always pause a beat or two to allow the defendant's atty time to object. Only answer what is asked. And don't volunteer shit. Be truthful. Fucking around on Surly is fine but being sanctioned, fined or jailed for contempt of court is not.
  21. This. One of Kirk's best if not THE best.
  22. Not single smile crossed his countenance during the entirety of the Heisman show. Sourpuss Aggieman, I'd say.
  23. Is it just me or is Kyler Murray's father a joyless, arrogant asshole?
  24. This story is now my Grecian urn of fables. It has set the tone for Christmas 2018. Many thanks.
  25. Not to mention a raven plucking an eyeball from the skull of a corpse and swallowing it. It's hard to stop watching this film if one surfs into it. The voice of Nigel Terry (Arthur) doesn't sit well for some reason but you like soft focus and tons if gleaming armor, you'll love Excalibur.
