How he fits at Texas: Johnson is a quick fix to the very real problem that is Gary Johnson’s forthcoming graduation. He’s got similar size, great change of direction and speed even if it’s not quite at Johnson’s unworldly level. As a JUCO he already has valuable experience in college schemes and is the kind of “cover him up and let him run wild” rover that Todd Orlando’s D can really maximize. Shorter but quick guys like this are easy to find now but they don’t typically come with two years of college ball experience. – Ian Boyd

Coach says: Strengths — Arrives at the ball in a damned hurry with something to prove. Appears compactly built and thick through the lower body. Takes on blockers and runners willingly and appears quite fearless. Great range and shows some great motor plays in limited tape. Seems assignment sound and delivers a bit shock on his hits. 41 tackles with 8.5 for loss with 5.5 sacks seems about right based on what I see on film. Diagnoses plays quickly. A blitz weapon. Two-year eligible and ready to transfer in spring 2019. Self-reported GPA pretty decent. Areas for Improvement/Concern — De-committed to Iowa State. Not much film on his pass coverage or ball skills. Would like to see this guy playing a little heavier but if he’s Gary Johnson 2.0, I would not care if they left him at this weight.

How this affects Texas: Johnson fits in multiple spots for this defense, but ultimately brings experience and age. This class needs more linebackers and Johnson can be one of those. Herman has no problem mining the junior colleges like with Gary Johnson, so this isn’t a surprise. He’s a December grad so he’d enroll in January, which is incredibly beneficial. – Justin Wells

Feel free to point out where any of my statements are false. I can see fans of Glass being content with him and Brown, Katy system concerns notwithstanding, I'll give you that. Anything else?

It's because you always leave out the good news - for example "Our biggest needs are interior OL and RB"

Right now they are, but at the start of the cycle everyone was panicking about slot WR and LB for good reason, but we fixed most of that early and are about to put a bow on the LB class tonight. You can acknowledge where things went well while also noting where we've fucked up (hi Drayton).

    Why are Katy RB's ass?

Talented, well-coached OL gives them enormous lanes to run through. Great weight program means they're physically maxed out. Scheme means they all have 1000 miles on the tires before they even get to college.

Who is celebrating the fact that we're going to miss on Bru and Sanders?  I'm fucking pissed, and I bet most of you guys are too.

I'm pissed that we're not getting those instant-impact guys.  I'm pissed that we've missed on a ton of in-state instant impact guys, too.  I'm pissed that we spent so much time and effort on Sanders and Bru that presumably could've put placed elsewhere.  I'm pissed that Drayton, who was hailed as some kind of mythical rainmaker, has totally shit the bed as a recruiter and position coach.

I'm pissed that we have a bunch of other coaches on our staff that aren't worth a hot shit, either.  I'm pissed that Herman is keeping those coaches around (at least through NSD1) because they, presumably, would help with recruiting, when that's obviously been a bad fucking idea.  I'm pissed that we have huge holes on our defensive depth chart and coaches that are so fucking oblivious about their players' mental status that they don't know a player is in a bad spot until the fucking pack up and leave.

This is all true. Still pretty stoked we're going to the Sugar Bowl, and holding out hope there's some course correction on the staff.

But I'm an eternal optimist idiot so don't mind me.

Not that it would have mattered but I always felt that sanders and bru’s visits were too early. They should’ve been in December or late November.

But we weren’t getting bru unless usc didn’t exist and sanders unless we were willing to match what bama and uga offered.

These 9.95ers are sounding really aggy about the comments of how the staff did all they could etc... sounds like what looch and Hamm were saying last year about Jimbo at least getting a visit from these guys.

Those kids aren't even keeping us in the game if we don't press hard early.

Read that after one of his games this year, the Hebron coach literally had to bear hug Bridges to keep him from chasing down and fighting an opposing player afterwards.

So maybe a bit more than "kind of" a dick, then.

I don’t know what his Twitter looked like before, but it doesn’t seem to have OU stuff on it now.

Interesting.  Wasn’t he, uh, supposedly more of an OU personality fit, according to our posters here?

Bridges is supposed to be kind of a dick who won't be here to play school even more than your average D-I player. On the flip side he's fabulously talented.

The way we currently utilize our nickel, I don't think Jamison can hold up in the run game

Brown probably can't cover slot receivers down the field well enough

Thompson makes the most sense. If he gets hurt, then it might have to be Sterns or maybe Cook

    Adimora in a year too

All of the RB stuff makes me ragey. No way Evans gets out of SEC country due to $$$, DJ Williams will split schools with Evans most likely between Bama and UGA, not likely on Cain because pedo state, Glass is somewhere between Rodney Anderson and Kyle Porter (big fucking gap guys), but Glass is upset that we havent prioritized him and we have no relationships with them.

Of note on the WR targets: Bru likes us more, but not 1,400 Miles more. Elijah Higgins, who happens to be 6'3 230.. is our other WR target worth mentioning. Problem is, he won't ever see the field at receiver at that size unless he doesn't gain a single pound over the next 4 years.

This is shaping up to be awesome and we should all be proud that we came in second for so many top national targets?

If we can't land that JUCO RB with our depth chart there is something very wrong. We better wrap keontay in bubble wrap for both camps. He might be our only RB.

We could be in a position of actually needing to get carries out of Kirk Johnson next year.

Beating SC and OU for California kids is no lay-up.

So from previous reads if dj got offered by bama then Sanders wasn’t going there. But Williams hasn’t been offered by bama but he’s signing with an sec team. Welcome to Texas glass. Am I getting this right?

I don't follow recruiting as closely as many here, but some of the projected outcomes in this update read like aggy celebrating their losses against Bama and Clemson.

I get we have to take since big shots and the biggest shots have the lowest %, but there's a lot of "great team effort, came up a little short against great competition" in this.

Winning even one of these battles would feel like all the effort was worth it.  If we can't win any of them, we may need to reevaluate what we're doing.

IT has been a little cheerleader-y this cycle. I get that there's a weird pessimism around this class even though it's pretty excellent, and they're trying to combat that, but it's reading a bit aggy.

Looking the part and playing the part are quite different from one another.

Yeah, but he's too skinny to play meaningful year one snaps anywhere right now. Rhule will try to redshirt him, too - the dude knows how to build a good line.
