  1. Back when I lived in SA in my McMansion we lost one of three AC units. AHS wanted to replace it with a mismatched cheap unit. On the divorce thread I’ve chronicled my ex’s insanity but she harnessed it and unleashed it on the warranty company til they replaced both inside and outside components with top of the line Trane. What’s the statute of limitation on insurance fraud? I’ll tell that story about her one day.
  2. Mixed results but I keep one anyway. AHS. Hot water heater - fixed fast Dishwasher (Covid supply chain issues) - LG - diagnosed a faulty main board, had the part shipped to me, returned to install the part but ruled the part cost too much so took it away from me. Then they sent me a check for $900 and I bought a Bosch and installed it myself. AC - I called a local guy who showed up in 20 mins and told me my package unit was toast (older house, all the components are in one unit). AHS had a guy out in 48 hours who stripped and reconnected some wires, swapped out the capacitor, and had me running in an hour. Very knowledgeable tech, and he saved me $10k. He drove a 1996 F150 with over a million miles and was proud that he fixes everything himself. I think it’s a YMMV situation but for $100/month it’s worth it to me. And I’ll never buy an appliance from a company that makes TVs.
  3. Squaredancing. That was my takeaway.
  4. Pm me. I can have a team of engineers on-site next week. That’ll be $2MM.
  5. My grandparents (home builders) designed their empty nest home around a 25’ X 40’ atrium with a close able cover in case of freezes/extreme heat. Floor to ceiling interior glass with a bougainvillea tree in the interior garden. Huge master suite and a smaller bedroom for guests. I loved that house. I’ve considered buying it as my FIL lives 2 doors down* but my father told me it would be a massive maintenance money pit. Am in process of buying my now late Dad’s custom built home from my stepmom. It’s pretty neat, gas fireplace in the wall betweeen the master bedroom and bathroom and a two story detached garage with an upstairs apartment/office suite which is going to be my man cave. Plus an air conditioned tackle room/shop adjacent to the garage. My forever home. My stepbrother lives in a mid century with an enclosed sunken den with large wet bar adjacent to his family room which is adjacent to a formal living room. The cathedral windows are in the formal dining room. They’ve bought vintage furniture and lucite dining room chairs plus he is a talented artist so the decor is perfect. The home was originally commissioned by the local lumberyard owner so lots of cool trim and fixtures. An A frame next to a quiet lake is my idea of heaven though. Since I’ll never be able to easily afford a mid-century on a Florida Keys canal, which is my other dream home. My sister’s husband will inherit one so I’ll just be a frequent visitor. *my wife has ruled that we will never live within easy walking distance to her father.
  6. My sibling scrubber her CV of anything remotely associated with her work at the Clinton WH and Dennis Hastert hired her as associate parliamentarian, where she served for 9 years. This morning I asked her who would be the ultimate arbiter if the Rs attempted to renege on a rules agreement. The Supreme Court? “Fuck if I know. We are in completely unprecedented insanity. Probably?”
  7. Thank you. She is still in ICU at Houston Methodist but I’m hoping she gets a “bucket list” period of time to see everyone that matters. She is one of the nicest, sweetest, most loving humans I’ve ever met and is my wife’s best friend. She and her mom are close like I was with my dad before he passed. I would trade places with her if I could.
  8. Brain cancer… my MIL got the diagnosis today. If there is some nightmare fuel it is Glioblastoma. She is 70, and usually people in her family live to mid-late 90s. Average 5 year survival rate for this kind is 1%.
  9. “Nick Saban has pictures of those refs having sex with goats.”
  10. Here’s something to get us going for the fall. That Rabideaux sausage is perfect. Family reserve Tobasco is a game changer too.
  11. No I was merely pointing out that SEC officiating isn’t perfect. I’m a disinterested observer here.
  12. I think he was making a blanket statement, plus I usually stay out of football threads. I try to be a good non-horn guest here.
  13. My dog (checkbook) in this fight ain’t those tigers.
  14. SEC refs just gifted Mizzou a TD on a false start so obvious that the entire LSU defense stood up and pointed. Y’all should just go ahead and start the SEC refs thread now.
  15. Agreed. Oddly satisfying without being particularly good.
  16. You need the vaccine. 100 Club sticker. That and my wife calls our police chief “uncle.”
  17. Which is why if a D gets nominated for speaker the whole Dem caucus need to vote nay. Don’t let the Rs punt.
  18. What’s the best BBQ in sugarland and Spring?
  19. Summer of ‘90-Spring of ‘95. I took a keg into Brooks hall during summer school but was never caught. I too spent all my time on double secret probation, mainly because of pesky Waco cops and MIPs. I finally had to pick a major and graduate after my ancestors got tired of cutting tuition checks. Typing all this out and thinking back to all my near disasters - there was clearly something wrong with me. Thank God we have a thread for that! Back to the topic at hand, Pat Green just headlined our foundation fundraiser benefiting, among others, the sober living facility on whose board of directors I serve. I’ve seen U2 twice and would spring for tickets at the Sphere in a heartbeat if I didn’t have to fly there for the occasion. Edit: ok those prices are a little rich for me, too. I’d tap out at $700 or so.
  20. When I arrived at Baylor, room 125 Penland hall, I was angry and rebellious. My parents had just announced their divorce, and I wasn’t down with being a good boy. My roommate and I went to Bill’s in Dallas or Plano or somewhere and found posters, and I put this one dead center. I think I had to censor it because nobody made me take it down. He had “She sells sanctuary” by the Cult on his wall. Good times.
  21. The problem with LSU is that it’s an hour from New Orleans. I would have died young.
  22. That’s awesome. Why is clapping in ASL not, well, just clapping? I’m not sure why this bugs me so much but it does. Am I ableist?
  23. Just talked to one of my engineers who had his roof and car damaged by a hailstorm last week in north Austin. Accordingly, roofing companies are coming out of the woodwork. Any recommendations on roofing companies? Paging @rotflbox?
  24. That was an awesome video. He restated something that I once heard from an AA podium which is arrogance and self loathing are just opposite sides of the coin called self centeredness. A few weeks back I was stuck - delayed - in an airport while my AA friend drew his last breaths. I had the audacity to get a little aggravated that this caused me to miss a last minute trip to the hospital to say goodbye. OTOH, it gave me a chance to text quite a few of our friends who did make it up there so he he didn’t die alone. As I sat with the 150 or so mourners at his funeral, I laughed at me. Suffering prompts change is a damned good reminder of how sick I can become. Also saw a guy last night who has 21 days sober, has already found a home group and a sponsor. God has him right where he’s supposed to be. As I said goodbye I marveled at how my “worry” is pointless.
  25. Agreed, but it’s national money flowing in. Strange things could happen. Had a long talk with his uncle yesterday, but we discuss family stuff, not politics.
