  1. Completely screwed up my second guess by impulsively typing up a word while brainfart forgetting a letter, so the rest was a cleanup operation. 2. The rig count is down for sure (a six percent decline from this time last year), so there are fewer workers getting shit done out in the patch already right now, but I haven’t heard of any mass layoffs yet.
  3. I didn't have any real-life examples in mind, probably because there aren't too many. It was more just hypothetical musing about that possible scenario.
  4. You know, one thing that occurred to me is that if I'm an American exporter who might be hurt by retaliatory tariffs from other countries, especially if my primary export market is China, why wouldn't I set up an assembly plant in Mexico, or hell, even in China, to avoid tariffs on my product? Of course, this would, in turn, negate any job growth incentive at my existing American facility and would, in fact, make those American employees more vulnerable to mass layoffs, especially if I find it's more profitable to just close my American operations.

  8. Dems should shout from the rooftops that this is not only ECONOMICALLY DESTABILIZING but also a gigantic TAX INCREASE. The main burden of both of those falls squarely on consumers: normal, average, everyday, working people. The public needs to be told: "TRUMP IS RAISING YOUR TAXES, bigly."
  9. Are you the one who said they were starting a Google Docs list a couple of months ago, itemizing the daily bullshit? Yeah, I can see how that'd be a burden.
  10. Photo from the comments:
  11. Even with his situation, he’s still wrong because the price of all consumer goods will go up. Coupled with the massive tax cuts on the wealthy, these tariffs are a regressive shift in the tax burden from the rich, who get the tax cuts, to everyday consumers, who get tax hikes.
  12. Last night, the local news out here said that if it hits 100 today, it will be the earliest ever in the season for it to get that hot. This is just the first shot of real heat, and it's supposed to be decent for the rest of the week after today. Spring was absolutely ruined by all the dust storms last month, so hopefully the milder temps stick around before someone opens the oven door again.
  13. The line after that last paragraph isn't showing in the Bluesky post for me, but the absurdity really needs to be highlighted.

  16. How Brexit, a Startling Act of Economic Self-Harm, Foreshadowed Trump’s Tariffs Britain’s decision to leave the European Union in 2016 was sold to voters as a magic bullet that would revitalize the country’s economy. Its impact is still reverberating. Britain has watched President Trump’s tariffs with a mix of shock, fascination and queasy recognition. The country, after all, embarked on a similar experiment in economic isolationism when it voted to leave the European Union in 2016. Nearly nine years after the Brexit referendum, it is still reckoning with the costs. The lessons of that experience are suddenly relevant again as Mr. Trump uses a similar playbook to erect walls around the United States. Critics once described Brexit as the greatest act of economic self-harm by a Western country in the post-World War II era. It may now be getting a run for its money across the Atlantic. Even Mr. Trump’s abrupt reversal last week of some of his tariffs, in the face of a bond-market revolt, recalled Britain, where Liz Truss, a short-lived prime minister, was forced to retreat from radical tax cuts that frightened the markets. Her misbegotten experiment was the culmination of a cycle of extreme policies set off by Britain’s decision to forsake the world’s largest trading bloc. “In a way, some of the worst legacies of Brexit are still ahead,” said Mark Malloch Brown, a British diplomat who served as deputy secretary-general of the United Nations. Britain, he said, now faces a hard choice between rebuilding trade ties with Europe or preserving them with Mr. Trump’s America. “The fundamental issue remains the breach with our biggest trading partner,” Mr. Malloch Brown said, adding, “If the U.K. ends up in the arms of Europe because neither of them can work with the U.S. anymore, that’s only half a victory.” cont'd
  17. Thanks, but I officially left Austin about 8 months ago, and I don't have a truck/trailer for hauling stuff, so I'll need someone to deliver to me.
  18. I'm in the market for some new living room furniture. Can you hook me up with your connection?
  19. That's fine insofar as any religious group is a "protected class," but when 1-2 religious groups are the only ones receiving protection and one, in particular, is especially disfavored by the regime, we've got a serious problem.

  22. Very cool, and congratulations! There are at least three adopted Surlyists that I know of, myself included. It's pretty wild suddenly finding out "where you came from" after living decades in the dark. I was in grad school at UT in my mid-to-late 20s when I first met my birthmom and started learning family history on her side. It's been really cool to find out a lot of that stuff. If we don't already have a genealogy or adoption thread somewhere around here, you should start one if you plan to do some digging on your ancestry. @atomheartbevo has mentioned multiple times that he's become his family's historian, so I'm sure he could give some pointers. Edit: It looks like we have a genealogy thread -- I must've missed it. https://www.surlyhorns.com/board/topic/19599-genealogy-discoveries/
  23. Not that it means anything in the grand scheme of things, but I just archived it. https://archive.is/LNGRM
