Just make sure you don't mess up some mundane detail in doing so.

It's an interesting question, though, to think through hypotheticals. In Texas, the state charges 6.25 cents sales tax on every dollar spent. That's our baseline. If the store where you purchased an item is located within an incorporated community, you're guaranteed having another penny added to that tax. Moreover, Texas allows for jurisdictions to take up to an additional penny. So, most of us Texans do our shopping where the sales tax is 8.25 cents per buck. So, let's say you buy something for $0.99. The sales tax on that would be $0.081675, meaning the total price you, the consumer, would pay is $1.07. If done the Canadian way, you would then only pay $1.05. Who's losing those two cents? The store, the city, or the state?

I just posted this in that awful Super Bowl thread where old white guys are complaining about rap and posting misogynistic memez.

I won't get into your 4th and 5th lines, but the previous three hit the nail on the head. One final point on the neighbors taking in Palestinian refugees: they rightly point out that Israel will refuse Palestinians re-entry into their own land once the dust all settles, making them complicit in Israeli war crimes as part of some "deal."
-
I mean, categorically separating Israel from the settlers is also just a denial of fact, but yeah, there are tons of nuanced positions one can hold. For example, one could believe that both groups need/deserve their own homelands: the Two-State Solution. Or, one could also believe that both groups should share the land as a single republic: the One-State Solution. Others could come down on a side that says neither fucking deserves it; it's a holy land for the world's three Abrahamic religions: the No-State Solution. Recently, some bloviating buffoon of a carnival barker actually proposed the US State Solution. But, mostly, I've heard others on this site say only one side should get it: the Final Solution. Yes, some people/posters are very consistent in which of the above positions they advocate for, while others offer nothing but inconsistent positions and constant derision. Where do you stand? The Status Quo Solution? No, not the status quo, because you've already tipped your hand to your lean with this statement: It's long been true that all the other Arab countries "support" the Palestinian "cause" but sure as shit won't give them a place to live. Would you believe, though, that about 5 million Palestinians already live in nations immediately surrounding Israel? Are you expecting them to take another 5 million that currently live in the West Bank (3M) and Gaza (2M)? And, yes, the idea of evicting *only* 2 million Gazans is what's on the table *now*, but that's just temporarily the case. But, sure, let's keep rationally discussing the cold logic of crimes against humanity and, ultimately, ethnic cleansing.

Not sure if you follow the covid/plague/black death/what-have-you thread in DT, but we talked about that county some a couple of days ago. Gaines County isn't your typical, super-duper Christian conservative West Texas wackos county. About half the population are German Mennonites who migrated to the county from their colony in Chihuahua, Mex., in the 90s and early aughts. And "half" might be an estimate that's slightly on the low end. It's the damnedest thing. About 20 years ago, my boss at the time and I went out to Seminole (county seat) for a project. We'd just heard about the Mennonites from our client before the first trip (we were going to have to do a lot of public engagement), who told us they were kind of a quirky group of folks. But, since it was the first trip, we were kind of intrigued, thinking they'd be like the Amish. Not only that, we saw that there was a Mennonite cafe which we decided to hit on our way into town from the Midland airport. But, uhhhh, no, it wasn't some cutesy shop with great coffee and awesome homemade pastries. It ended up being some hole-in-the-wall kind of place full of men, only men, filling up every seat in the place chatting with each other. As soon as we walked in, everyone went silent and watched us go up to the counter: no muffins, no breakfast tacos (burritos...they do burritos in West Texas), and no breakfast options at all as far as I can remember. The guy did, however, pour us some horribly weak, hot dark water out of a thermos into the same styrofoam cups everyone else had. And while he was busy doing so, chatter around the cafe started up again, and I can tell you it was really bizarre hearing a bunch of crusty white guys (and they were all white) speaking a weird mix of German and Spanish. Later on, we were told emphatically that our Amish-like expectation was pretty far off and that these guys were largely dirt farmers and carpenters who did a good bit of drug smuggling on the side, running back and forth between Gaines County and Chihuahua. They just also happen to not believe in a lot of modern American culture, but they were okay with adopting a lot of modern technology. The women are kept home with the young kids and the school-aged ones don't really participate in any public schooling beyond 8th grade. I'm sure they mostly rely on their own religious country schools by now, regardless of age, since they've been embedded there for at least a good couple of decades. Of course, they're all likely unvaccinated to boot. Edit: Oh, Brisket gave us a glowing recommendation on this stuff, though, which is nice.

Closer than that: Buffalo is directly across the Niagara River from Canada. So, it'd be akin to someone in El Paso saying they feel more closely tied to Juarez than Mississauga, Ontario. Well, yeah, no shit, lady.

Yeah, we talked about it earlier for about a page in the damned plague thread.

I mean, there is an impulse (AND THERE IS ONE) to post every outrage porn-tweet, but if we are going to keep our heads on straight (and we need to), at the very least, pause for a moment and make sure we're not posting bullshit. Holy fuck. Believe me, because we're gonna have a lot of material to work with...

Dude, you've really got to quit your Twitter addiction. This is from October. Texas county reverses classification of Indigenous history book as fiction A Montgomery County committee caused an outcry after labelling “Colonization and the Wampanoag story,” a children’s Native American history book, as fiction. A Texas county on Tuesday reversed a decision to reclassify a children’s book on Native American history as fiction after the move drew anger from authors, advocates and one of the world’s largest publishing companies. A citizen committee in Montgomery County, just north of Houston, moved the nonfiction book “Colonization and the Wampanoag Story” from the county library system’s juvenile nonfiction collection to its fiction collection last week, according to an email from a librarian shared with The Washington Post. The book details encounters between the Wampanoag tribe and the Pilgrims, as well as encounters between Christopher Columbus and other Indigenous tribes. Advocates and nonprofits, including the Texas Freedom to Read Project, Authors Against Book Bans and the American Indian Library Association, blasted the move in an open letter Wednesday asking the county to move the book back to the nonfiction collection. They were joined by Penguin Random House, which published the book by author and Indigenous historian Linda Coombs. “Colonization and the Wampanoag Story is a carefully researched, fact-based account of the Indigenous perspective of the tribes of the New England area on the impacts of European colonization,” the letter states. “Moving it to the fiction section communicates distrust of material that reflects the truths of our American history.” On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Commission reversed the decision and returned the book to a nonfiction classification, according to messages from the group shared with The Post. The commission, which appoints the citizen committee that reviews library books, did not respond to requests for comment before the reversal or afterward.

I'm going to go back to the well on this one. Are you honestly saying we don't have enough DEI in the CR? Personally, I fucking welcome your presence so that, hopefully, you'll be able to defend the shit you say and, then, we can have a gotdam conversation over, you know, facts, reality, or the color of the sky. Maybe actually try to "convince anyone of anything."

This is what you voted for. He fucking told us this was what he was going to do. If you didn't want this but voted for it anyway, you were clearly not paying attention during the campaign or you were flat-out conned. Your responsibility now is to make amends and go help out the people you hurt with that vote.

Is this the part where they try to erase US history?

Yet another poster moseys in over here, talks out of his ass, gets corrected, can't/won't answer a simple question, and then runs the fuck off.

Such as an attempt at the abrogation of fundamental citizen rights afforded by the US Constitution?

What's a little racist trolling between friends, right? And STILL no response on the other one, you know, the data thief. Explain why a 19-year-old intern, who was fired from his previous job for sharing leaked corporate information, has access to all of our (collectively, the whole fucking country) most guarded data?
-
Okay, you've been gone for more than 24 hours after laying this egg and have posted elsewhere in the meantime. You come in, drop a stupid-as-shit post, and then don't come back after receiving multiple replies. If you're going to call us of being hypocrites for living in an "echo chamber," then you've just contributed to it. Probably without realizing it, you did the exact same thing other conservative [sic] posters do. You make a dumb/ill-informed/factually wrong comment (sometimes they just lie), get quickly corrected, and then don't return. That is why the CR is mostly an echo chamber. You guys just wholly abandon the playing field in preference of that hole in the ground where you stick your head so you can pretend all is well, except for all those undesirable vermin poisoning the blood of our country. That's not just hypocrisy; that's cowardice.
