U.S. Beef Industry in absolute crisis
bolverk replied to Horn Under a Bad Sign's topic in Daily Texan
All true. Our KFC was a stand-alone. The Taco Hell shares a building with Long John Silverβs. As for the local fast-food chicken wars in this town, there's Chicken Express, Chick-fil-A, Golden Chick, Popeye's, and a local place called Gill's thatβs been here forever. For the fried stuff, I usually go to the last one, which used to be a small regional chain, but I think it's the only one left. The Popeyes is out on the interstate on the other side of town, embedded in a truck stop with IHOP, so I tend not to get out there very often. -

It's incredible how badly they've gone downhill and fucked up something as simple as fried chicken, ruining their "brand" and having to close locations. We just lost our local one a few months ago, not that I'll miss it since I haven't had KFC for several years, but still. That place used to be the gold standard for basic fast food chicken, and now they're probably the worst of the bunch. -
I guess this is the right thread for this. Paramount to Lay Off 2,000 Employees The job cuts are the result of a merger with Skydance, the Hollywood studio founded by David Ellison. Paramount on Wednesday began laying off more than 2,000 employees, a long-awaited consequence of its merger with the Hollywood studio Skydance. The cuts, announced internally by David Ellison, Paramountβs chief executive, will initially include roughly 1,000 employees in the United States across many divisions, including CBS News, the Paramount film studio and cable networks like MTV, Nickelodeon and BET. The rest of the cuts, some of which will affect Paramountβs international employees, will come later. Overall, Paramount is planning to cut roughly 10 percent of the combined company. In a memo to employees Wednesday, Mr. Ellison said that the cuts were focused on eliminating redundant jobs or phasing out positions not in keeping with Paramountβs evolving priorities. βThese decisions are never made lightly, especially given their effect on our colleagues who have made meaningful contributions to the company,β Mr. Ellison said in the memo. Paramount employees, who have been subjected to near-annual corporate reorganizations, have been bracing for layoffs for months. When Skydance announced its merger with Paramount last year, the company said it was looking for $2 billion in synergies, Wall Street argot for cost-cutting. Mr. Ellison signaled earlier this year that major changes were coming. In September, he sent a memo telling employees they would be expected to return to the office five days a week in the coming months. Employees unwilling or unable to return to the office would be eligible for a severance package, he said. Some of Paramountβs most senior employees have already announced their departures as the layoffs have drawn near. Pam Kaufman, the head of Paramountβs international business, told employees in September she was leaving after more than a quarter-century. Chris Aronson, the president of U.S. distribution for Paramount Pictures, said this month that he would be departing in December. Successive waves of layoffs have become the new normal in Hollywood as executives merge companies and try to wring out billions in costs after those deals close. The specter of further cuts has been the talk of Hollywood in recent days as Mr. Ellison plans a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, HBO and the Warner Bros. film studio.

https://www.wired.com/story/chatbots-are-pushing-sanctioned-russian-propaganda/ OpenAIβs ChatGPT, Googleβs Gemini, DeepSeek, and xAIβs Grok are pushing Russian state propaganda from sanctioned entitiesβincluding citations from Russian state media, sites tied to Russian intelligence or pro-Kremlin narrativesβwhen asked about the war against Ukraine, according to a new report. Researchers from the Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD) claim that Russian propaganda has targeted and exploited data voidsβwhere searches for real-time data provide few results from legitimate sourcesβto promote false and misleading information. Almost one-fifth of responses to questions about Russiaβs war in Ukraine, across the four chatbots they tested, cited Russian state-attributed sources, the ISD research claims. βIt raises questions regarding how chatbots should deal when referencing these sources, considering many of them are sanctioned in the EU,β says Pablo Maristany de las Casas, an analyst at the ISD who led the research. The findings raise serious questions about the ability of large language models (LLMs) to restrict sanctioned media in the EU, which is a growing concern as more people use AI chatbots as an alternative to search engines to find information in real time, the ISD claims. For the six-month period ending September 30, 2025, ChatGPT search had approximately 120.4 million average monthly active recipients in the European Union, according to OpenAI data. Austin Public Health says whooping cough likely spreading at Lamar Middle School Austin Public Health has confirmed five cases of pertussis, better known as whooping cough, at Lamar Middle School this year. Those cases involve unrelated students from various grades and classes. βIt is difficult to confirm, but it is highly likely that pertussis is spreading at this middle school,β said Heather Cooks-Sinclair, epidemiology and disease surveillance manager for Austin Public Health. Cooks-Sinclar noted that five other schools across various local districts also reported cases of pertussis this school year. She said cases in Travis County are rising β which she said could be due in part to increased local testing. The illness is highly contagious. Its signature symptom is a persistent cough that lasts more than 10 days and often worsens at night. Patients may hear a distinctive βwhoopβ sound when coughing or vomit after coughing. They may also experience a runny nose, sneezing and fever. Severe cases are often treated with antibiotics. Whooping cough can be dangerous to young children and babies, who may struggle to breathe. Around one in three babies who contract whooping cough end up hospitalized, according to APH and other health experts. βIf your physician suspects you or your child has pertussis, please do not attend school until you/your child has been cleared to return by the physician and health department,β said Austin-Travis County Health Authority Desmar Walkes in a letter to Lamar Middle School parents notifying them of a positive case this fall. In Texas, students are required to receive the TDAP vaccine β which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis β before enrolling, unless they apply for a conscientious exemption. According to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, only 74.31% of Austin ISD kindergartners had received their TDAP vaccine as of the 2024-25 school year. The exemption rate for Austin ISD was 2.19% β meaning some unvaccinated students did not have an exemption on file. Cooks-Sinclair said the confirmed cases at Lamar Middle School underline the need for parents to get their children up to date on vaccines, including TDAP. βIf your child has not been vaccinated, get them vaccinated,β she said. βThe effectiveness of the pertussis vaccine wanes over time. If your child is between 9 and 10 years of age or 15 and 16 years of age, they may need a booster.β Late last year, Texas DSHS reported an increase in pertussis cases β around three times the number of cases in 2024 compared to the previous year. DSHS does not yet have provisional case counts for 2025. KUT has reached out to Austin ISD and Lamar Middle School for comment. -

Interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is about to get very active β Space photo of the week The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is barreling toward its closest point to the sun as perihelion looms on Oct. 29. How different will it look when it reappears on the other side? Even as a brilliant, naked-eye comet slices through Earth's sky (cheers, Comet Lemmon!), the most famous object in the solar system right now is hidden on the far side of the sun: the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. This alien visitor, which most astronomers believe to be a comet originating from an unknown star system far beyond our own, is only the third interstellar object ever detected in our solar system. It is the largest, fastest-moving, and quite likely the oldest interstellar object ever seen. Though it was just confirmed by NASA in early July, the freewheeling ball of ice and dust is already nearing the halfway point on its tour of our solar system. This Wednesday (Oct. 29), 3I/ATLAS will reach perihelion β its closest point to the sun β before beginning its months-long departure from our cosmic neighborhood. We'll miss our interstellar friend, but at least we'll always have the photos. The image above, captured Aug. 27 by the National Science Foundation-operated Gemini South telescope in Chile, may be the clearest image we have so far. As 3I/ATLAS zooms closer to the sun, radiation from our star heats the ice on the comet's body (its nucleus), causing geysers of gas and dust to shoot outward and form a glowing plume (a coma) around it. Radiation pressure from our star's unrelenting solar wind pushes this material into a long, prominent tail angled away from the sun. As 3I/ATLAS reaches perihelion this week β coming within 1.4 astronomical units, or 130 million miles (210 million kilometers) of the sun, according to NASA β it may start releasing gas in overdrive. When the comet becomes visible to telescopes again in early November, it may look both bigger and brighter than how it appeared two months ago. Instruments on the ground, in orbit and even on their way to Jupiter will snap to attention, making 3I/ATLAS an even bigger space celebrity as it zooms away from our solar system forever. Studying the interstellar comet with the full range of humankind's astronomical instruments could yield untold secrets about the outer reaches of our galaxy and its mysterious history. Until then, all we can do is wait, feel the warm sunlight on our faces, and know that a trove of cosmic information lurks just on the other side of our star.
