2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
bolverk replied to bolverk's topic in Cloak Room
So, no toning down the rhetoric. Huh, I'm shocked. -
It's like in the great stories Mr. Brisket, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it'll shine out the clearer. l know now folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something. That there's some good in the world, Mr. Brisket, and it's worth fighting for.

Coupled with the portion of the AP article that seems to imply the ladder was already there, it sounds like local LEO/USSS did indeed have plans to position someone up on the roof, and someone fucked up mightily by not being where they were supposed to be.
-
There are not a ton of new details from an AP update, but here's a portion that was new to me. This says the cops were alerted before he got on the roof, and it makes it sound like the ladder could have already been in place. If so, it sounds like local LEOs or the USSS may have gone up there to scope things out and/or have someone positioned on the roof, but they didn't stick around and left the ladder in place. Several rallygoers reported to local officers that Crooks was acting suspiciously and pacing near the magnetometers, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation. Officers were then told Crooks was climbing a ladder, the official said. Officers searched for him but were unable to find him before he made it to the roof, the official added. Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe told the AP that a local officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who saw the officer and turned toward him just before the officer dropped down to safety. Slupe said the officer couldnβt have wielded his own gun under the circumstances. The officer retreated down the ladder, and Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump, and thatβs when Secret Service snipers shot him, according to two officials who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

In the 4chan post, he claims he was detained for several hours for questioning, gets fired, and then posts his story on 4chan an hour later. Yeah, that really adds up. (I clicked so you don't have to.)

I'm telling y'all, @Enchubben is right! The rhetoric from Dems really needs to be ratcheted down. Far-Right Extremists Call for Violence and War After Trump Shooting "They should all be hung in the streets," one person wrote of Democrats, the media, and others. "War now," another wrote. Far-right communities online lit up on Saturday night with calls for violence, retribution, and civil war in the wake of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. βI guess they really do want war,β a member of the pro-Trump message board known as The Donald wrote on Saturday evening in a post that has since been deleted. Many other members of the message board, which played a significant role in coordinating activities leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, agreed in responses to the post. βLetβs give it to them,β one person wrote. Another added: βIβm ready. This is my last damn straw.β One other user wrote: βCIVIL.FUCKING.WAR. I'm ready to be done with this fucking shit from Democrats.β The details of these posts were shared with WIRED by researchers from Advance Democracy, a nonprofit organization that conducts public interest research. Mainstream online platforms like X and Facebook have also been flooded with conspiracies and disinformation in the wake of the shooting, but in far-right communities, much of the talk focused on what happens next. βTheyβve been trying to take this guy out since heβs been in office,β a member of Uncle Samβs Proud Boys Upstate NY Telegram channel wrote in response to a picture from the shooting of Trump with a raised fist and blood on his face. βToo bad for them they missed probably their only shot at this failed attempt because they are about to really see what happens when you poke the bear for too long ie true American patriots. Fuck the DNC, Fuck the RINOs, fuck the FEDs and fuck the MSM. They should all be hung in the streets.β In a Telegram channel for the Infamous Legend Valley Proud Boys, an Ohio branch of the far-right militia, one member wrote: βLaugh and smirk now you Leftist cunts, But never fucking forget you will always reap what you sow.β On The Donald, users were also calling for all Democrats to be rounded up. βWar now,β the user wrote. βThey donβt want to live and let live. We need to finish what should have been done after the civil war: eradicate and eliminate all democrats and anyone who even thinks of being a democrat.β Calls for violence and civil war from far-right communities is nothing new. In the wake of the FBIβs search of Mar-a-Lago in 2022, Trump supporters immediately called for an armed uprising. Earlier this year, similar calls were made when Trump was found guilty on 34 felony charges. While these calls for violence do not always result in real-world action, there are numerous examples where online rhetoric has led to offline violence, most notably the Capitol riot. βUnlike the messaging in the aftermath of the attacks at the Cincinnati FBI field office and on Paul Pelosi, there is a concerted effort to present this as the consequence of left-wing rhetoric around Trump and fascism,β Jon Lewis, a research fellow at George Washington Universityβs Program on Extremism, tells WIRED. βA singular clear message is being spread from the top down and the bottom up, from members of Congress to right-wing influencers to neo-Nazi Telegram channels: We need to fight back.β Researchers at Advance Democracy say it is difficult to assess the scale of the online attacks, as the situation is still developing and could escalate. On Sunday, one of the main topics of conversation on The Donald was what would have happened if Trump had been killed, with most claiming that the response would have been much deadlier and much swifter. βI told my neighbor that if Trump had been killed I would have pulled my kit out, quit my job, and started working on my wish list,β one user wrote. These calls for violence are not limited to online spaces. Minutes after Trump was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, the former presidentβs supporters quickly turned on the media covering the rally. "Fake news! This is your fault!β they yelled, according to Axios reporter Sophia Cai, who was there. "You're next! Your time is coming," another shouted. A number of the attendees tried to break into the media area, but were stopped by security guards.

Even supposedly benign rhetoric includes veiled threats of violence. I guess gun-toting, church-going guys like Johnny ignore what their party leadership says, or people like him are just fucking liars. Heritage Foundation: "[We are] in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.β

Do you guys remember that time Trump retweeted a loon who posted, "The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat"?

Surly Farms remembers.

These posts are a sign of a deeply unwell psyche.

I'm aware and am not a fan of those either. I'm trying to stay out of all that and am trying to stick to posting only what's reported. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/14/us/politics/trump-gunman-thomas-crooks.html

Conspiracy theories have been springing up on Truth Social. Not long after former President Donald J. Trump was shot at on Saturday, unsubstantiated rumors started swirling on his social media site, Truth Social. Truth Social users posted memes suggesting that President Biden or Hillary Clinton was behind the attack at the rally in Butler, Pa., and argued that there might have been multiple gunmen. They hailed Mr. Trump as a heroic figure, circulating the now-ubiquitous photos of his bloodied face and ear. Right-wing conspiracy theories are par for the course on Truth Social, a niche social media platform dominated by conservative political discourse. Over the years, Mr. Trump has used the site to repeat his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen and to criticize the judges and prosecutors involved in the criminal cases against him. Since the shooting, Mr. Trump has posted occasional updates, reporting that a bullet had pierced his right ear. On Sunday, he said it was βGod alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.β Since the attack, Truth Social coursed with an unusual degree of anger. βLet us know if thereβs anything you would like 100 MILLION RED BLOODED AMERICAN PATRIOTS to do for our country,β one user wrote in a post addressed to Mr. Trump. βSay the word Sir, say the word.β Kash Patel, a Trump confidant who in the past has threatened to target journalists for prosecution if the former president regains the White House, took a more measured stance in a post on Saturday evening. βNow is not the time to attack the media,β he said. βLet law enforcement and secret service do their jobs.β βAnyone putting out speculation and false information does not deserve our attention and has shown you what their priorities are,β he added. But soon, another user responded to his message with an all-caps missive: βHOW DOES ANYONE TRUST ANYTHING THIS GOVERNMENT/DOJ SAYS?? WE CANβT.β

Yes. It's been reported by multiple outlets as being an "AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle" was recovered. Another update:

Yeah, keep an eye on this guy, whom QAnon people have long claimed to be JFK Jr. ETA: He just stands there with his mouth agape through the whole ordeal until the twice-impeached, convicted felon, rapist fraud, and disgraced former president is propped back up.

It also goes to show that MNLonghorn is a homophobic liar.

Blurb on the shooter from the Pittsburgh paper: Neighbors, county councilman speak about alleged gunman In Bethel Park on Saturday morning, media descended near where Mr. Crooks lived, with police blocking off a large area of the neighborhood. Neighbor Dean Sierka, 52, said he lived five doors down from Mr. Crooks. Mr. Sierka and his daughter, Lilly, said that Mr. Crooks seemed a little odd growing up, but they didn't expect him to be involved in the shooting. "It's crazy ... you wouldn't expect that from that kid," Mr. Sierka said. "He was a little bit off, he was like the weird kid, but you wouldn't expect this." Mr. Sierka's daughter Lilly said she knew of Mr. Crooks, as they attended K-12 school, together, including Bethel Park High School. Democratic Allegheny County Councilman Dan Grzybek, who represents a large swath of the South Hills including Bethel Park, said Sunday morning on X that the shooter lived on his street. βI canvassed his parents for my election last year,β he wrote. βAbsolutely surreal.β

I wanted to get a more local perspective and visited the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's website. Short article they posted on the one shooting fatality: Man killed at Trump rally was former fire chief in Butler County who was protecting family Corey Comperatore's wife and daughter, in statements on Facebook, described a chaotic scene during the shooting The family of a Buffalo Township man has identified him on social media as the victim killed Saturday evening during a shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Butler, in which Trump was injured and two other spectators were critically injured. In separate social media posts, Corey Comperatoreβs family mourned his loss. βThe PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore,β posted Dawn Comperatore Schafer on Facebook. βThe hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. βHe was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable. My baby brother just turned 50 and had so much life left to experience. Hatred has no limits and love has no bounds. Pray for my sister-in-law, nieces, my mother, sister, me and his nieces and nephews as this feels like a terrible nightmare but we know it is our painful reality.β Mr. Comperatore was the former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company. Trump was about 10 minutes into his speech at the Butler Farm Show grounds about 6:15 p.m. when gunfire erupted and the former president was rushed off stage. Trump, who had a bloody wound around his right ear, later confirmed in statements online that a bullet pierced his ear. Thousands of supporters had been waiting for the candidateβs appearance, in advance of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week. Officials later said one rallygoer was killed, and two others were wounded, although they did not identify the injured spectators. Mr. Comperatoreβs wife and daughter, in statements on Facebook, described a chaotic scene in which he tried to protect his family. His daughter, Allyson Comperatore, wrote that her father died βa real-life superhero,β who quickly threw her and her mother to the ground when gunfire started at the rally. βHe shielded my body from the bullet that came at us. He loved his family. He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us,β she wrote. His wife wrote that the rally was meant to be an uplifting event. βYesterday, what turned out to be such an exciting day for my husband especially, turned into a nightmare for our family,β his wife, Helen Comperatore, wrote in a Facebook post. βWhat my precious girls had to witness is unforgivable. What I had to was.β βHe died the hero he always was.β Mr. Comperatore was an engineer at JSP, according to his LinkedIn profile. A GoFundMe to support the Comperatore family was set up on Sunday. So far, more than $3,000 has been donated.
