  1. I didn’t realize you were from the Midwest. Both of the above invalidate any opinion you might hold in this debate, because: You must be a Yankee, and Your grammar sucks. Therefore, you can’t be correct about green spaces, parkland, or recreation areas, because I’m feeling a little tired and cranky this morning and reserve the right to criticize you for unrelated shit. The end.

  5. Still the best. Love you!
  6. Fuck them for not being able to or caring to differentiate between the notions of patriotism and nationalism. You can be a patriot without becoming a fucking nationalist.
  7. If you haven't watched Andor yet, do so. There's an episode with this line (below) in there that reflects Netanyahu's embrace of Hamas: β€œYou need a radical insurgency you can count on -- you need Ghorman rebels to do the wrong thing.” That episode also does a lovely job of showing how the Press becomes complicit in heinous acts by either parroting a regime's outright lies or indulging in distractions for the public. Andor should be required viewing in American civics classes across the land.
  8. Surly's been ahead of the curve on calling this. Trump’s Vision: One World, Three Powers? President Trump’s recent actions and statements suggest he might want an arrangement where the United States, China and Russia each dominate their sphere of influence. For President Trump, anytime is a good time for deal-making, but never more so than now with the leaders of China and Russia. Last week, Mr. Trump said he wanted to normalize commerce with Russia, appearing to lessen the pressure on Moscow to settle its war with Ukraine. And he is trying to limit the fallout from his own global trade war by urging China’s leader to call him. β€œWe all want to make deals,” Mr. Trump said in a recent interview with Time magazine. β€œBut I am this giant store. It’s a giant, beautiful store, and everybody wants to go shopping there.” Mr. Trump may have something even bigger in mind involving Russia and China, and it would be the ultimate deal. His actions and statements suggest he might be envisioning a world in which each of the three so-called great powers β€” the United States, China and Russia β€” dominates its part of the globe, some foreign policy analysts say. It would be a throwback to a 19th-century style of imperial rule.
  9. While welcome, I don’t have much, if any, confidence that the Israeli War on Palestine will keep Trump’s consistent interest or that he’ll continue to criticize them. Still, it’ll be interesting to see whether Trump’s supporters will do a sudden about-face and begin to do the same. That is, if they’re even paying attention. Trump’s Comments on Gaza Reflect Israel’s Growing Isolation For months, Israel’s strongest allies had been reluctant to join a wave of global censure against the war. Now, even the Trump administration appears to be growing impatient. Through more than 18 months of war in Gaza, Israel has faced intense criticism from foreign leaders and aid groups but has rarely experienced sustained public censure, let alone concrete repercussions, from its close allies. Until now. In recent weeks, partners such as the United States, Britain and France have become more willing to place Israel under overt pressure, culminating in President Trump’s call on Sunday for the war to wind down. β€œIsrael, we’ve been talking to them, and we want to see if we can stop that whole situation as quickly as possible,” Mr. Trump told reporters in New Jersey shortly before boarding Air Force One. Those comments contrast with the public position Mr. Trump held entering office in January, when he blamed Hamas rather than Israel for the war’s continuation. He was also careful to present a united front with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. Mr. Trump’s latest comment followed a coordinated effort by Britain, Canada and France to criticize Israel’s decision to expand its operations in Gaza. In a joint statement last week, the three countries β€” which had broadly supported Israel’s right to respond to the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023 β€” said the expansion was β€œwholly disproportionate.” All three countries warned of concrete repercussions if Israel did not change course. Britain has since suspended trade negotiations with Israel. It also placed sanctions on Israeli extremists leading efforts to force Palestinians from land in the Israeli-occupied West Bank β€” one of its most consequential moves against Israeli interests since it dropped its opposition last year to an arrest warrant issued against Mr. Netanyahu. Separately, France is organizing a conference, which will be held in June in partnership with Saudi Arabia, to discuss the creation of a Palestinian state β€” an outcome Mr. Netanyahu has vowed to oppose. Still, all of these countries continue to support Israel in many practical ways, not least through military, economic and intelligence partnerships. The United States continues to supply Israel with billions of dollars in military aid, helping to sustain the military operations in Gaza. The U.S. secretary of homeland security, Kristi Noem, visited Israel on Sunday and Monday, meeting with Mr. Netanyahu and other leaders, and attended a ceremony in honor of two Israeli Embassy staff members killed in an attack in Washington last week. Britain and France helped protect Israel last year during huge barrages of ballistic missiles from Iran, and they would most likely do so again. Moreover, they remain wary and have sometimes been critical of some of the moves made against Israel by other countries, including the push to charge Israel with genocide. But the shift in the tone of their messaging, coupled with some small practical limits on Israeli interests, indicates that Israel’s strongest partners are beginning to lose patience with Mr. Netanyahu. So far, Israel appears unmoved. Responding to the European threats, Gideon Saar, the Israeli foreign minister, said that his country would take its own β€œunilateral measures” if further steps were taken. In Gaza, Israeli troops have continued to advance, and officials say the military now controls roughly 40 percent of the territory. The Israeli Air Force continued to strike targets in Gaza on Monday, including a school-turned-shelter that Israel said was used by militants. And while Israel has ended an 80-day blockade on food, allowing some aid into the enclave in recent days, much of that has yet to reach the people who need it most, according to aid agencies. Israel is also pushing ahead with a contentious effort to reshape how food is distributed in Gaza that critics say will accelerate the displacement of people from northern to southern Gaza. Mr. Netanyahu has remained defiant, accusing Britain, Canada and France of β€œemboldening Hamas.” In a speech last week, he addressed their leaders directly, saying, β€œYou’re on the wrong side of humanity and you’re on the wrong side of history.” Within Israel, the moves have been perceived as a step toward diplomatic isolation. β€œAfter 593 days of war, Israel has reached a diplomatic nadir: Some of its most important friends in the world β€” Great Britain, France and Canada β€” have taken the liberty of issuing a statement threatening Israel with sanctions if it continues the war in Gaza,” wrote Itamar Eichner, a diplomatic correspondent, in Yediot Ahronot, a centrist broadsheet, last week. β€œNever before has such a statement been issued against Israel, turning it into a pariah state,” Mr. Eichner added. β€œThe most worrisome part: The United States, which has always stood up for Israel, responded with silence.”

  12. I watched it high and enjoyed it afew nights ago but didn't find it super funny. It did have a few good moments, especially once she started talking about her recently deceased dad. The special really was all about him, but she also tells a few stories about her also decently deceased mom and stepmother. Her act was a little more subdued than past ones, but I think it was basically a tribute and she realizes she's now an orphan who's getting older. In that context, I could relate a lot with this special.
  13. "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." Everything we're seeing in this country right now only reinforces the truth in this quote. We're such a scared, hateful, and small people that we don't mind we're getting grifted in all new ways on the daily by the powers that be. Although he might grumble under his breath a bit if the public beach he lives on is sold to the highest bidder in a similar fashion as the 'forrests' because in that case he'd be directly affected.
  14. I haven't seen them co-located, sharing maybe the same leased acreage, but there some solar farms very close to wind ones out here in West Texas with more solar in the planning pipeline, unless tariffs, the regulatory environment, and/or a change in the incentives have changed all that. I have seen/heard discussions about oil companies planning to integrate solar into their operations out in the patch and, of course, new energy hog data mining and server farms coming along in tandem with solar/wind projects, along with all the existing O&G.

  16. Finally got around to "Under Paris" on Netflix last night. Going in, I knew it was a satire on the horror/disaster film genre, and it did not disappoint. They managed to fit in just about every Hollywood trope. Really enjoyed it and got some good laughs.
  17. Two hours later, and no response from @RollLeft to your efforts at engagement. Let's take a look at his most recent posts, all of which are in the CR. None are substantive about Trump or his policies, but all are provocations against the community. Time to put TrollLeft on ignore.
  18. He’s the embodiment of ignorant arrogance, an obnoxious know-nothing, a bloviating blowhard, a loud, windy, and wet fart. Are they still making Kirby vacuum cleaners back in your hometown? I always wondered how the hell some site selector made that decision way back in the day.
  19. That’s similar to the iterative strategy I developed for myself in undergrad, where I recopied and progressively condensed my notes until all information/concepts fit on an index card or two. The process could also include speaking the notes aloud or drawing small symbols/pictures/flow charts, whatever was needed to get what I needed to stick in my brain. It’s a good coping strategy for those of us who suffer from simple minds and addled brains.

  22. Oaky, well, I've been sick twice since the pandemic first hit: once in August 2021, after a work trip, and the other in December 2024, after a road trip to New York. In both cases, I performed the Covid home test kit, and in both cases, the results were negative. So, yeah, I could've been exposed at some point, but let's just say I never got sick from Covid. Now, again, my point to Slorch was that he's not unique in not having fallen ill with Covid, either from a) winning some kind of genetic luck or b) following the advice of experts by taking the shot/masking up in enclosed public spaces during the worst of the outbreak. Is there something you disagree with in my saying that? Is there a flaw in my logic, doctor?
  23. Dump it in the North Atlantic to keep the AMOC from slowing too much, which would keep Europe from falling into a new Ice Age.
  24. Sound like masking in enclosed public spaces and getting the jab during the worst of it worked for you, @Iceman. Congrats! That's great news. I too took all the prescribed precautions and came out of it physically unscathed (i.e., I never caught it either). I suppose, though, we could also have won the genetic lottery and have some characteristic that protected us from that specific virus as @troph postulates. After all, I do recall something about how certain blood types seemed to be less susceptible to the virus attaching to cells. Whichever the case, I'm grateful but have moved on.
  25. Sounds an awful lot like that lawfare stuff @Frank Drebin pretended to be so concerned about.
