  1. He also said stupid shit like (not direct quotes): "I know the horrors of war, because I wore a uniform for four years" when he spent WW2 pretending to be a soldier as a Hollywood actor "Plants cause most air pollution" "All the nuclear waste from a nuclear reactor could fit underneath my desk" Something about the prophecies of Armageddon coming true was imminent back in the 1980s The dude was kooky and dumb, but the media and his team let all that shit slide. @DixonHur At no point did he ever hit 70%. Hell, half of his presidency was at or below 50% approval. I just turned 53 last month and can remember those quotes being mentioned in the news, but I do think he was given a pass on a lot of stuff. Yes, that's obviously better than Biden, Trump, or even Obama. Still, there's a reason why we can all point back to his time in office, which was such a pivotal moment in the country's trajectory that eventually led us here. I just turned 53 last month and can remember those quotes being mentioned in the news, but I do think he was given a pass on a lot of stuff.
  2. Governor DeSantis Signs Legislation to Keep Lab-Grown Meat Out of Florida On May 1, 2024, in News Releases, by Staff HARDEE COUNTY, Fla.β€”Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 1084 to prohibit the sale of lab-grown meat in the state of Florida. Florida is taking action to stop the World Economic Forum’s goal of forcing the world to eat lab-grown meat and insects, β€œan overlooked source of protein.” While the World Economic Forum is telling the world to forgo meat consumption, Florida is increasing meat production, and encouraging residents to continue to consume and enjoy 100% real Florida beef. β€œToday, Florida is fighting back against the global elite’s plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs to achieve their authoritarian goals,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. β€œOur administration will continue to focus on investing in our local farmers and ranchers, and we will save our beef.” https://www.flgov.com/2024/05/01/governor-desantis-signs-legislation-to-keep-lab-grown-meat-out-of-florida/

  4. A quick Google search shows that the metallurgical plant they hit is located in Lipetsk, 200 miles northeast of the border near Kharkiv. This is further than the airbase they supposedly haven't yet been allowed to strike with ATACMS in Voronezh, just to the south of there. Was this attack on the plant done with drones or some sort of missile?
  5. Although this show's first season may have started slowly, it just keeps getting better and better. This build-up to all-out war is really good.

  7. Turnout by the hour of the day over the last several parliamentary election cycles. A huge uptick in voting above shows somewhat dampened support for the RN (Le Pen's National Rally). Predictions were that they'd top 36% in this first round. Polls projected Ensemble (Macron's coalition) would only get 16%, but they're about 5 points ahead of that. Political spectrum results: ReconquΓͺte 0.7% (FAR FAR RIGHT) RN 33.5% (FAR RIGHT) Les RΓ©publicains 10.0% (RIGHT) Centre 1.6% (CENTER RIGHT) Ensemble 20.7% (CENTRIST) Nouveau Front populaire 28.1% (CENTER LEFT) Gauche 1.8% (LEFT) ExtrΓͺme gauche 1.2% (FAR LEFT) Divers 2.1% (MINOR SPECIAL INTERESTS) RIGHT 45.8 CENTER 20.7 LEFT 31.1 Headline: The RN dominates the first round. I've seen various calls from leaders in the Nouveau Front populaire and Ensemble coalitions for their third-place candidates to drop out, so there will be more unity among those who oppose the RN in the second round.
  8. The infection is spreading. Hungary's Orban announces plan to form new far-right bloc in European Parliament Orban launched the "Patriots for Europe" on Sunday, an alliance with Herbert Kickl, the leader of Austria's far-right Freedom party, and Andrej BabiΕ‘, the former prime minister of Czechia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n on Sunday presented a new alliance with Austria's far-right Freedom Party and the main Czech opposition party, which hopes to attract other partners and become the biggest hard right-wing group in the European Parliament. OrbΓ‘n travelled to Vienna to present the β€œPatriots for Europe” alliance of his Fidesz party with Herbert Kickl's far-right Freedom Party and the former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis's ANO party, a day before Hungary takes over the European Union’s rotating presidency for six months. The European Parliament elections in early June strengthened far-right parties, though their performances varied from country to country, but left unclear to what extent they would manage to work together. Until now, they have been spread across two groups in the EU legislature, plus a large number of unaligned parties. OrbΓ‘n in recent years has appeared to relish opportunities to block, water down or delay key EU decisions, routinely going against the grain of most other leaders on issues like the war in Ukraine relations with Russia and China. His public opposition to EU policies and stances has long frustrated other governments in the bloc and pushed him to the margins of the continent’s mainstream. β€œWhat Europeans want is three things: peace, order and development,” OrbΓ‘n said through an interpreter at Sunday's event. β€œAnd what they are getting from the elite in Brussels today is war, migration and stagnation.” Orban also posted about the launch on X. "Three political parties joined forces today: the strongest Austrian party, the strongest Czech party and the strongest Hungarian party. Our aim is to become the strongest right-wing group in European politics," it read. But the three partiers will need to attract lawmakers from at least four more EU countries to successfully form a group in the new parliament. Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl noted that the new European Parliament will meet for the first time in Strasbourg on July 16. He said that β€œstarting immediately ... all political forces that want to join in our political and positive reform effort are very welcome." Kickl added that β€œfrom what I have heard in recent days ... there will be more of them than some of you probably suspect right now.” He didn't name any potential partners, and the three party leaders didn't take questions. The Freedom Party narrowly won first place in the European Parliament election and hopes to win Austria's national election on Sept. 29. All three parties are pro-Russian; none of them support Ukraine in its fight against Russia which launched a full-scale invasion in 2022. "We will prefer national sovereignty to federalism, liberty to orders, and peace to war," Babis posted on X, referring to the war in Ukraine.
  9. Black Shirts and Banned Flags: Ultras Push Politics at Euro 2024 Hard-core fan groups, embracing a strong nationalistic streak, have provoked pushback from soccer’s authorities at the European Championship. The instructions were concise and clear. Those hoping to march to the stadium with Hungary’s fans for their soccer team’s first game of the European Championship were expected to report by 10 a.m. sharp, five hours before kickoff. A strict dress code would apply. Some could wear black. Others were to stick with red, white and green, the colors of the country’s flag. Under no circumstances was there to be any flashiness. β€œGaudy colors, clown hats and bagpipes” were all prohibited. They were, prospective marchers were reminded, β€œgoing to a soccer stadium, not a circus.” The hectoring and slightly priggish tone felt jarring, considering the source of the orders: the official Facebook page of the Carpathian Brigade, a virulently nationalistic faction of hard-core fans β€” ultras, as such groups are known β€” that provides the Hungarian national team with its vociferous and volatile backing. The Carpathian Brigade has, in recent years, become perhaps Europe’s most infamous ultra group, its reputation forged by clashing with the police, showering opponents with racist abuse and displaying homophobic banners. In 2021, during the last European Championship, it had to remind members to cover up any Nazi-related tattoos so as not to contravene German law. None of that has stopped its growth. If anything, it has accelerated it. Drawn by the Carpathian Brigade’s voluble Hungarian patriotism and unabashed right-wing values β€” an ideology that both echoes and trumpets the populist rhetoric of Viktor Orban, the country’s prime minister β€” the group may now be able to call on as many as 15,000 members. It is also not alone. Black-clad ultras have been a fixture at Euro 2024 this month, with detachments β€” sometimes numbering a few hundred, sometimes a little larger β€” visible across Germany and at games involving Albania, Croatia, Romania and Slovakia, among others. Though some of those groups were formed as a response to the Carpathian Brigade, in most cases they do not share either its motivations or its precise political agenda, and none carry quite the same air of menace. Their presence at the Euros, though, has been an issue for UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, which has levied fines on a number of countries during the tournament, including multiple punishments for β€œtransmitting provocative messages not fit for a sports event.” The groups do not just provide a soundtrack and a visual spectacle whenever and wherever their national teams play, they also hint at the rising tide of nationalism across Europe.
  10. Today, France goes to the polls in the first round of elections for parliamentary seats. Turnout Is High in France’s Snap Elections Participation was unusually strong as voters headed to the polls for a parliamentary election that could put the country on a new course. Here’s what to watch for. Voters in France flocked to the polls on Sunday for the first round of snap legislative elections that President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly called this month, a gamble that has thrust the country into deep uncertainty over its future. At 5 p.m. local time Sunday, the participation rate was 59.39 percent, the Interior Ministry said. That was far higher than in 2022, during the previous legislative elections, when the participation number at the same time was only 39.42 percent β€” reflecting intense interest in a vote that will determine the future of Mr. Macron’s second term. Voters are choosing their 577 representatives in the National Assembly, the country’s lower and more prominent house of Parliament. A new majority of lawmakers opposed to Mr. Macron would force him to appoint a political opponent as prime minister, radically shifting France’s domestic policy and muddling its foreign policy. If no clear majority emerges, the country could be headed for months of turmoil or political deadlock. Mr. Macron, who has ruled out resigning, cannot call new legislative elections for another year. France’s nationalist, anti-immigrant National Rally party is widely expected to dominate the race. A broad alliance of left-wing parties could come in second. Mr. Macron’s centrist Renaissance party and its allies are expected to lose many seats. Most polls will close at 6 p.m. local time on Sunday, or as late as 8 p.m. in larger cities. Nationwide voting projections provided by polling institutes, based on preliminary results, are expected right after 8 p.m. and are usually reliable. Official results, published by the Interior Ministry, will come in throughout the night. Here is what to expect. The voting happens in two rounds, and participation is already high. A surging far right, a strong left-wing alliance and a shrinking center are on display. First-round results could give an imperfect sense of where the vote is headed.

  16. This is the path to take. If I were an Oklahoma teacher, all I can say is that they would most definitely not want me to use the Bible as a teaching aid. I'd do a deep dive into every inconsistency, every story of god's wrath killing innocents, and every gross thing I could find. I would make it my goal to turn all my students into doubters and atheists. Students, can anyone tell me why there are two separate creation stories? Can any of you explain why god would be concerned with people worshipping other gods if they didn't exist? Why do you think god would be so petty as to make Abraham almost murder his own son as a test of faith? Wouldn't an all-knowing god already know what was in Abraham's heart? If god commanded the Jewish people in the Ten Commandments not to kill, why did he tell them to slaughter all the Canaanites? Who here believes that people who didn't have access to modern healthcare could live 800 years? Why do y'all think there are so many different and contradicting versions of the resurrection story? Who did Cain procreate with if there were no other people to do it with? How could a pair of every single species on Earth fit within the confines of Noah's ark, given that it was approximately only the size of a Super Walmart?

  20. Must be really upset about losing to the US the other day. Bolivian Military Tries to Storm President’s Palace in Apparent Coup Attempt The democratically elected president, Luis Arce, called on Bolivians to mobilize against those trying to seize power, as troops filled a central square and tried to force their way into the palace. Members of Bolivia’s military attempted to storm the presidential palace in the capital, La Paz, on Wednesday afternoon, in an apparent coup attempt led by a top general who declared he was leading an effort to β€œre-establish democracy.” The country’s democratically elected president, Luis Arce, appeared on television shortly after, calling on Bolivians β€œto organize and mobilize against this coup and in favor of democracy.” β€œLong live the Bolivian people!” he shouted. β€œLong live democracy!” Video on Bolivian television showed security forces in riot gear occupying the country’s main political square, Plaza Murillo, a camouflaged tank ramming into a palace door and soldiers trying to make their way into the palace. The general, Juan JosΓ© ZΓΊΓ±iga, briefly entered the building, according to local reporters, before exiting and making a speech surrounding by masked members of the security forces. He criticized the government of Mr. Arce, a leftist, and said the military was attempting to install β€œa true democracy, not one for a few.” He also called for the release of several politicians and members of the military who have been imprisoned, including two political opponents of Mr. Arce β€” former President Jeanine Áñez and former Gov. Luis Fernando Camacho. β€œEnough of rule by a few,” the general said. β€œLook where that has gotten us! Our children have no future, our people have no future, and the army does not lack the balls to fight for our children’s tomorrow.” Shortly after, Mr. Arce said he was replacing General ZuΓ±iga, the commander general of the armed forces, as well as the heads of the air force and navy. Local news media had reported that General ZuΓ±iga was dismissed from his position this week, which some in the country believed to be related to remarks he made about former President Evo Morales, a mentor of Mr. Arce. In a statement on television, the new commanding general named by Mr. Arce, JosΓ© Wilson SΓ‘nchez VelΓ‘squez, urged Mr. ZuΓ±iga β€œnot to spill the blood of our soldiers.” The move was immediately criticized by some leaders in the region, including President Luiz InΓ‘cio Lula da Silva of Brazil. β€œCoups have never worked,” he told reporters on Wednesday. In 2019, Mr. Morales and other leaders, facing violent protests and under pressure from the military, stepped down and fled the country, and Ms. Áñez, a senator from a right-wing party, became president. But at the next election, a year later, voters overwhelmingly chose Mr. Arce, Mr. Morales’s hand-picked successor.
  21. First off, I don't know why you're addressing all these questions at me, but your statements above directly contradict the Jedi Code, which forbids them from killing unarmed opponents. During the 47 years that I've been watching Star Wars shows, I can't recall a single instance of a Jedi intentionally killing an unarmed opponent. I've never read any of the books or comics, so it's possible there are instances I'm unaware of. If you have an example of it happening, enlighten me. I'm not sure if they had realistic expectations that the flying cockroaches would kill him, but it worked to remove him from the picture for a bit. So, regardless of how cheesy it was, that idea was a success. I think the showrunners were just super-excited to show off the introduction of cortosis to film. It's nearing the end of the High Republic, yo. Maybe the Jedi Quality Control Team has started slacking off. I don't know what to tell you other than they maybe didn't send their best to support Sol. I think what we're seeing with Mae is that she's an opportunist. When she became more scared of the Jedi catching her, she figured she'd be better off turning herself in. On the other hand, when she figured out she was in more immediate danger from Qimir, she quickly switched back over. Her character lives by no "code" other than revenge, which leads her down the path of using the dark side. My guess is that she's not necessarily a true believer in it other than she finds it useful. She is kind of a coward, though, because I think she's been killing off the Jedi more out of fear of her master for not carrying it out. She thinks it looks cool? Look, man, armor is armor. Sure, it might not protect against sabers and blasters, but those aren't the only weapons out there, e.g., throwing knives. That's kind of a silly minor detail to bitch about. Fuck if I know. It was probably a plot hole by the writers but could easily be dismissed as Sol being rattled and a fucking mess. He failed to protect all the other no-name dead Jedi. He had been getting his ass kicked by a dark force user he's never seen before from out of nowhere. He knows his big secret about what happened to the witches is about to get out. Agreed that the twins are the weakest link in the show, especially going forward when all the dull Jedi with poor acting skills are now dead.
  22. I could buy that at this point, too.
  23. True. But Luke also struggled with the dark side at times. I was simply pointing out that Sol has that in him, too. Maybe he didn't have someone back at the coven to hold him back when the twins were young. It's a possibility, at least. It could also be that the angry one of the two moms is much more powerful than we imagined, and she went into a fit, killing everyone. Or they all got killed in the crossfire between her and the Jedi. Maybe she's still alive and ends up being the Sith master we're speculating about. I dunno -- just playing out scenarios. Let's just see how this all turns out.
