@hobbes2702 and others who don't feel like watching Newsom's address. Quick NYTimes write-up below. I'm sure there will be more written later in other media. This feels like a showdown. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/us/newsom-speech-trump-la-protests.html?smid=url-share Gov. Gavin Newsom made the case in a televised address Tuesday evening that President Trump’s decisions to send military forces to immigration protests in Los Angeles have put the nation at the precipice of authoritarianism. The California governor urged Americans to stand up to Mr. Trump, calling it a “perilous moment” for democracy and the country’s long-held legal norms. “California may be first, but it clearly won’t end here,” Mr. Newsom said, speaking to cameras from a studio in Los Angeles. “Other states are next. Democracy is next.” “Democracy is under assault right before our eyes — the moment we’ve feared has arrived,” he added. Mr. Newsom spoke on the fifth day of protests in Los Angeles against federal immigration raids that have sent fear and anger through many communities in Southern California. He said Mr. Trump had “inflamed a combustible situation” by taking over California’s National Guard, and by calling up 4,000 troops and 700 Marines. The governor is considered a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, and his Tuesday night speech, called “Democracy at a Crossroads,” sounded national in scope. It aired on some national networks and on Mr. Newsom’s social media accounts. The current political standoff has made it possible for Mr. Newsom to have a wider platform, and he has jousted with President Trump and Republicans for several days in interviews and on social media. “Authoritarian regimes begin by targeting people who are least able to defend themselves.,” Mr. Newsom said in his speech. “But they do not stop there. Trump and his loyalists thrive on division because it allows them to take more power and exert even more control.” The address was an unusual move for Mr. Newsom, who has dyslexia and dislikes reading from a teleprompter to deliver formal speeches. But he has been using every communication channel possible to raise alarms about the extraordinary measures Mr. Trump has taken to mobilize the military for domestic uses. Not since the civil rights movement in the 1960s has a president sent National Guard troops to quell unrest without the support of the state’s governor. “I ask everyone to take the time to reflect on this perilous moment,” he said, “a president who wants to be bound by no law or constitution, perpetrating a unified assault on American traditions.”

He called out our Hurr Durr Fuhrer on all the bullshit in very strong terms, itemizing the list of illegal, unconstitutional shit and basically saying explicitely that Donny Fuckwad wants to be a dictator.

First time I've ever seen him speak in any sort of formal setting. Some of his speaking quirks jumped out, but I don't give a single fuck.

No, it won’t, but all of it needed to be said.

Newsom just gave an address tonight.

Felt the same way, my man. As a viewer, you do have to switch gears, but as a Star Wars fan, select episodes of 'Clone Wars' and just about all of 'Rebels' fill in so many blanks and make for some great entertainment.

Don't mean to make this thread all about me, me, me, but the NWS's report on that Sunday evening storm I posted photos of has come in: BIG SPRING, Texas — A powerful storm barreled through Big Spring on Sunday night, causing widespread destruction and prompting the city’s mayor to issue a local disaster declaration. Winds reached up to 119 mph as the severe thunderstorm struck shortly after a warning was issued around 7:40 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The storm produced damaging wind gusts and baseball-sized hail, which shattered windows, downed power lines and tore through homes and vehicles across the area. Video link

Why don’t you take your comments to the LA Cloak Room thread if you want to talk about state government policy, tax rates, and other non-protest-related news topics?

Thunder is rumbling, and the skies are growing darker. More is on its way, making it the third day in a row of rain, and four of the last five. Bring it - just no more hail, please.

No, I’ve never held or voiced that opinion. I was born, raised, educated, worked, and raised a family in this state. It is my home, and I will stand my ground against any traitor to the traditional Texan spirit, embodying the notions of 'live and let live,' the 'Golden Rule,' and opposition to authoritarian tyranny. America is also my home, and I believe in the US Constitution and all its Civil Rights, including the inalienable ones: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You don't believe in any of that shit, which makes you both un-Texan and un-American. Go back to whatever shithole your ancestors fled from. You don't belong here.

As a born, raised, and educated Texan, living here for 53 years, I firmly hold the opinion that this state is fucked. And in my professional and social circles, that is a widely-held belief. I’m sticking around and standing my ground, though, because this place is my home and it’s worth fighting for.

U.K., Canada, Australia and Others Impose Sanctions on Far-Right Israeli Ministers The coordinated move highlights the hardening of several countries’ stance toward Israel amid the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Five Western countries announced on Tuesday that they would impose sanctions on two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, a remarkable rebuke of Israel’s leadership and a striking escalation of Western pressure on Israel over settler violence in the West Bank and the conduct of the war in Gaza. Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Norway jointly imposed the sanctions, which will restrict the right to travel and will freeze the financial assets of the Israeli security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir; and the finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich. Mr. Smotrich and Mr. Ben-Gvir are among the most hard-line members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet. Both have called for the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza in statements that the British foreign secretary, David Lammy, has previously condemned as “monstrous.” “Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights,” Mr. Lammy and the foreign ministers of the four other countries said in a joint statement on Tuesday. “That is why we have taken action now — to hold those responsible to account.” While the measures are in response to violence in the West Bank, British officials said they were also calculated to ratchet up the pressure on Mr. Netanyahu’s government to negotiate a cease-fire with Hamas in Gaza, at a time when the humanitarian situation in the enclave had become increasingly dire. The Israeli foreign minister, Gideon Saar, reacted defiantly, describing the move as “unacceptable,” and saying the government would meet next week to discuss a response. “It is outrageous that elected representatives and members of the government are subjected to these kind of measures,” Mr. Saar said. The move to blacklist Mr. Ben-Gvir and Mr. Smotrich had been weeks in the making and came after Britain, Canada and France issued a stark statement last month about the treatment of civilians in Gaza. But France did not join in imposing sanctions on Mr. Smotrich and Mr. Ben-Gvir, illustrating some differences in how allies are approaching Israel. British officials said they had sounded out officials in the Trump administration about the planned move in recent weeks and had not encountered strong resistance. In their joint statement, the five countries said, “We will strive to achieve an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, the immediate release of the remaining hostages by Hamas, which can have no future role in the governance of Gaza, a surge in aid, and a path to a two-state solution.” Speaking in Parliament in late May, Mr. Lammy denounced Israel’s conduct of the war. He said that Britain would suspend talks on a trade agreement and blasted comments by Mr. Smotrich about “cleansing” Gaza and moving its two million people to other countries. “We must call this what it is,” Mr. Lammy said. “It is extremism. It is dangerous. It is repellent. It is monstrous.”

Some people actually give a shit about their hard-earned freedom and rights. I know that might seem foreign to you, as your posting history strongly suggests you don't. All you've ever shown to be interested in is how fat your billfold is, no matter whatever the fuck is going on or whatever damage is being inflicted on others.

The Way Too Early 2028 Democratic Presidential Candidate Thread
bolverk replied to Bullneck's topic in Cloak Room
Is one of our foundational principles cheering on those who say we should let the second-largest metro area in the country burn? -
And they supposedly love "their" country.
