Stupid linguistic help for a pissed off Dad
bolverk replied to InkaUtexas's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
Google Lens also works for translating languages embedded in an image. I use it all the time to translate Russian and Ukrainian text in screenshots posted in the Ukraine War thread. Take, for example, this. I just googled "images of Chinese language" and found this photo. Right-click the image, click "search images with Google" on the menu, select whatever portion of the image you want, and then hit translate. I can't speak to the quality of the translation, but it works like fucking magic. -
Renewable Energy Saving Texas' Ass Right Now
bolverk replied to Horn Under a Bad Sign's topic in Daily Texan
About a week ago, Samsung announced it would build a battery storage facility outside my hometown, and a separate solar project is also coming online next year. This is in addition to the 4-5 wind farms already in the county. Renewable energy is plentiful in Texas; it's only a matter of capturing, storing, and transmitting it. But we're getting there. -
It seems that if we're going to be subjected to this kind of blasphemy, it's only fair @Kyrie Eleison next has to render in fine detail the bottom half of the scene showing Trump's tight football pants squeezing runny old man poo-poo out of his puffy, over-filled diaper, forcing brown liquid to spray up the back of his jersey and ooze down his inseam and staining his icy white uniform.

As the crow flies, it's 126 miles from downtown to Lavaca Bay.

I'm guessing you're talking about the herky-jerky character "development"
-
I think why this show seems so awful is that it feels like it was written for pre-teen adolescents. More bad acting and stilted dialogue. Guess they want us to believe Mae's goofy and incompetent smuggler sidekick is the Sith baddie, but that's too obvious and is probably just a red herring.

It was a rough stretch for my daughter. The ex-wife and I were going through a divorce, so she was already miserable. At the time, she was still trying to figure things out and was going through a phase when she had a boy's haircut and only wore boy clothes, but she didn't have a boy's strength. The bullying was so persistent, with repeated violence, that the family had to eventually pull him out after the school year ended. In the meantime, my daughter was in a terrible state and threatened suicide at school a couple of times. You can't imagine the anguish you'd feel as a father to receive a call at work from the school to come pick up your daughter because she broke down and was threatening to kill herself with a pair of scissors during a 4th-grade art project or another time when she was at the top of some bleachers and was threatening to jump. We got her into therapy and she eventually got better, but I hope anyone who reads this can see why I treat this topic so seriously.

Ruidoso orders residents to GTFO due to raging wildfire: "GO NOW"
bolverk replied to RPM's topic in Daily Texan
Yeah, the Ruidoso area and up around Red River are two places in New Mexico dominated by West Texans. It's close, convenient, and pretty affordable. I checked in with a buddy earlier this afternoon who moved his family up to Cloudcroft a couple of years ago (he lives part-time there while spending the rest of the time working in the Permian Basin). Anyway, he said the fire appears to be heading away from them and so far smoke-free, but their place is on a steep slope and surrounded by pine trees, so he's keeping a close eye on it. -
If you're a parent of a kid who got beat up for being gay by a piece of shit bully (a boy), you'd understand that name-calling can eventually lead to violence, which is why I will consistently call out bigoted homophobes. I fully understand that not many, including myself, are unhappy with The Acolyte for many valid reasons. When you cherrypick the fact that two characters, who may never be seen again in this show after a single episode, are lesbians as one of your chief criticisms, it reveals what a fragile little snowflake you are.
-
Hey, thanks for the recommendation. Sincerely. My kid is off to college in New York, so we don't really get a chance to watch shows together too much nowadays. I do watch The Boys, but I'm not entirely sure she does. I'll ask her the next time we touch base over a Zoom call. Hopefully, the following explanation isn't too annoying or tedious, but the sign language shown in The Boys doesn't appear to be an actual "sign language." It's certainly not American Sign Language, which has its own grammatical structure and vocabulary (specific signs for specific concepts). To me, what they portray as sign language looks mostly like generally vague gestures, but the character is Japanese, so I don't know if what's portrayed is actually "sign language" (most countries have their own twists, so a sign language in one country might be very different than another). Rest assured, though, none of the above is a criticism of you at all. I didn't know any of this stuff either until I had a deaf kid. One thing she has mentioned regarding supposedly deaf characters in films/shows is that she can always tell if the actors are actually deaf. According to her, there's a fluidity of hand movements (words) and facial expressions (punctuation) that convey the degree of fluency. In other words, she can easily detect when someone is faking it--even when a hearing actor is technically proficient in using the correct hand signs. I guess you could say that it's a little bit like accents. Again, thanks for your suggestion. I have no doubts about your sincerity or that it comes from a good place. The Boys has been a fun satirical show that I've enjoyed over the past few years, and I'll see if she has any thoughts about Kimiko's signing.

Sure thing, buddy. Twitter accounts labeling all protestors as anti-semitic, anti-Israel, or pro-Hamas are totally on their side.

Since PRONG HORN continues to refuse to be transparent and post the article, I'll go ahead and do it so others can determine if his commentary, "UN can't find evidence of famine," matches the article and judge whether he can be trusted as a fully honest broker of information. https://archive.is/eWRtw UN Panel Says Data Lacking to Determine Whether Famine Exists in Northern Gaza The UN expert panel contradicts findings of human rights organizations but warns against using the report to deny 'that extreme human suffering is without a doubt currently ongoing in the Gaza Strip' The United Nations Famine Review Committee published a report on Monday on the situation in the northern Gaza Strip, in which it said there is not enough reliable information to declare a famine. The committee is part of the UN's Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (aka IPC), which is a scale that indicates food security in crisis zones, as measured on a scale from phase 1 (generally food-secure) to phase 5 (famine/humanitarian catastrophe). The report stated that the committee is "unable to endorse the IPC Phase 5 (Famine) classification" for northern Gaza, a classification that the U.S. Famine Early Warning Systems Network has endorsed. The UN panel's report said it did not find the U.S. "analysis plausible given the uncertainty and lack of convergence of the supporting evidence employed in the analysis. Therefore, the [committee] is unable to make a determination as to whether or not famine thresholds have been passed." The UN report emphasized that "all stakeholders who use the IPC for high-level decision-making must understand that whether a famine classification is confirmed does not in any manner change the fact that extreme human suffering is without a doubt currently ongoing in the Gaza Strip and does not in any manner change the immediate humanitarian imperative to address this civilian suffering by enabling complete, safe, unhindered, and sustained humanitarian access into and throughout the Gaza Strip, including through ceasing hostilities." The conclusion will likely help Israel rebut accusations of starving Gaza on the international legal front and to respond to criticism against it by other countries on the matter. Still, an Israeli response to the expert panel's conclusions that it should increase the amount of humanitarian aid entering Gaza, including through a cease-fire, is liable to cause a crisis in the government. On Sunday, senior cabinet ministers criticized the Israeli decision to undertake a daily "tactical pause" to allow more deliveries of humanitarian aid. The decision led to exchanges of accusations between the prime minister and Israeli military brass.

He doesn't seem to have a problem copy/pasting all his godawful tweets, exposing us to the bottom-of-the-barrel dregs found in his feed. But, of course, he's innocent of the poor-quality information stream he shares. You see, it's simply the algorithm, which he totally has no control over.
-
You certainly know how to copy and paste.

Paywalled. Post the article so that other posters can read it to understand the full context of the UN's statement. You surely wouldn't want to mislead anyone.

I'm not sure if you were around the old site when Rogue One came out, but there was a lot of bitching in that thread about the Asian character. As for your kid, mine also has a disability; she's deaf. I honestly can't recall a deaf character in any of the shows, either. But that's not the point I've been making. If you'll recall, last night's rant was in response to all the bitching about Disney's diversity "agenda" and mocking characters for being different. My message is telling supposedly grown men to grow the fuck up. We live in a diverse country and world. And if there were alien life, I'm sure it'd be diverse as fuck, too. To expect some far, far away galaxy, which includes all sorts of life spread across an untold number of planets, to reflect the same demographics as a lily-white gated subdivision in Montgomery County where (to quote one Surly poster) "there are no gays" is the pinnacle of living in denial. They're just pissed and scared about the world changing around them, with the big tell being that none has yet made a comment that two different species somehow (yet to be explained) managed to conceive twins. Instead, they focus on (GASP!) the fact that the two characters are lesbians. In other words, they're guilty of bringing their political and religious viewpoints into a thread discussing a fucking fantasy universe. If they have such a problem with it, then I'd recommend they stop watching the show or refrain from discussing their politics/religion in this thread. They're behaving like a bunch of little shithead 4th graders on the playground, throwing rocks at that one kid who's a little different (I do hope your kid was never bullied like that, but I can tell you my daughter experienced a good bit of it when she was much younger). For grown-assed Texas men to mock lesbians or even to moan about their mere existence in a fictional story in this day and age is to go full aggy. It sounds like bitching about desegregation and women having the right to vote. Finally, I don't know if the writers have anything specific in mind when it comes to explaining the twins' parentage or their conception (was it "immaculate," witchy magic, or some space version of IVF?). Hopefully, there will be a point to it. If not, then it's just shitty writing or maybe just simple pandering to a portion of their audience who had yet to have been represented in any Star Wars shows that I can recall. Where have I or anyone else "excused poor storytelling" in this show? Everyone agrees that this show has had major problems aside from the uptight assholes who are absolutely acting like little bigots by making such a big deal about a couple of lesbians. And WTF with the "personal responsibility" comment? For what exactly? The writing or raising a gay daughter? Also, it's Rogue One, not Rouge One. I thought the misspelling issue had finally been resolved between all the bitching about an Asian character in the thread about that show on the old site, but I guess not.

2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
bolverk replied to bolverk's topic in Cloak Room
Better that catturd says it than Trump: "Let me tell you something, folks, and I know about doors, I know about windows, believe me. Death, they talk about death, like it's final, but let me tell you, it's like a door, okay? A door opens, you go through it, and then what happens? You come back! Just like that. Time, they say time, it's like a window, right? It's like a window, you look through it, you see things, and guess what? You can open it, you can close it, you can do whatever you want with it. Time is flexible, just like a window. And let me tell you, when I say I'll be back, I mean it, folks. Because I always come back, stronger than ever. So remember, doors, windows, it's all about coming back, and that's what we're gonna do, we're gonna come back and we're gonna make things great again, believe me." Not bad ChatGPT. It could use a little more seasoning, but I'm too lazy to give editing an effort. -
Here's most of the commentary about identity (mostly gender-related) shit starting from the first episode's release up until that last stupid fucking tweet. I left out usernames to avoid calling individuals out and peppered in are replies making fun of those easily offended by the existence of characters representing other groups of people. Again, complain about the writing, the acting, the story, the dialogue, etc. I don't understand folks' obsession with this stuff, but pointing it out over and over again just shows how easily triggered many of you snowflakes are. If you can't leave your homophobic politics out of your commentary, shut the fuck up. As I said before, my daughter is gay. If you're a parent of a kid who's different, you'll understand why this is a hill I'm willing to die on. \ "At this point" The first time gay people are depicted in a Star Wars show is apparently too much for some. God forbid, a short female. Remind me again how tall Yoda was. Also, note the use of "female" to emphasize her role is out of place. Yup. Neg-bombed in the reviews by the public before it was released. Lots of complaining about lesbians when I was told that wasn't a chief cause for complaints. Oh, and one more.

I'm not the one who brought culture war shit to this thread. If you don't like gay people or prominent women characters on screen, keep it to your fucking self.
-
Look, I'm not emotionally invested at all in this show, and I'm certainly not "desperate" for it to be good. SPOILER ALERT: IT'S BEEN BAD. I'm not going to search this thread for all the comments about lesbians, nor am I going to look for complaints in other threads, such as the House of the Dragon one, where people bitch about there being Black actors playing Valyrians. I see it for what it is: mostly straight, middle-aged white guys pathetically feeling threatened by having to share the stage with others (oh no, I mentioned a different thread where people have also pulled this same tiresome shit!). Sometimes I speak up to say, "Fuck off to those kind of comments," and "Stick with valid complaints," but mostly I don't. Knowing Macklemore/Icono for the loathsome person he is and his consistently hate-filled agenda, I decided to say something about it tonight. I'm sorry if that offended your delicate sensibilities by me saying, "Don't be a dick."
-
Look at the tweet Macklemore/Icono shared if you need a reminder about what set this off. Moreover, I seem to recall you had a minor shit-fit about race in the Wheel of Time thread.
-
Gotcha. People coming in her to complain that two lesbians having kids (which can happen here even on earth) while simultaneously ignoring interspecies, not to mention presumably interplanetary, procreation is rich. People complaining that a white guy got killed off early when you see similar types of non-white characters getting whacked early in other shows all the fucking time is blatant hypocrisy. People complaining about a fat Jedi when we see a tiny little green man jumping around and doing flips and shit high in the air is just stupid. Don't they both have the Force at their disposal? Valid criticisms about the storytelling are fine and encouraged. I was addressing the same cadre of posters who consistently bemoan the race and gender of characters, sidetracking potentionally good discussions. I guess some people feel threatened that a better balance nullifies whatever special feeling they get from seeing actors who are different from them on the screen. Apparently, it makes them feel alienated, even though they're still largely over-represented as a share of the whole audience. This obviously leads me back to the point that folks like to see characters who are like them participate in these stories.
