    2024 NFL DRAFT

There isn't a perfect metric or stat for QB play. Most QB stats and metrics are influenced by the offense and surroundings as a whole, and grades that seek to isolate the QB like PFF rely on someone trying to understand the QB's full job, including pre-snap checks and understanding the progressions he's coached to do, and no one is probably truly qualified to do that outside of the football team EPA based metrics (QBR), or ones similar (DVOA) are probably your best bet, while also having PFF handy as a cross check I think Purdy and McCarthy's situations were so different that it's difficult to compare, although I'm fairly certain that traditional box score scouting isn't the best way

It's an EPA based metric. When numbers don't match what you'd expect from looking at a box score, it likely means someone did better or worse on 3rd downs than you'd expect from the box score. How you perform on third downs matters in football.

So we should be looking at W/L to rank QBs?

Exactly. It's an EPA based metric that takes game context into account.

It's more useful than counting stats

Are you under the impression that Tebow wasn't a good QB in college?

He was #3 in the nation in QBR, and had big NFL level throws in big games that were critical in those victories

Based on what? Cumulative counting stats that included a lot more interceptions? McCarthy's metrics were better, and he had these: https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/401551786/alabama-michigan https://www.espn.com/college-football/team/_/id/194/ohio-state-buckeyes

I don't think this is clear cut, and their situations were so different that it's difficult to compare. JJ did his job, which was to not throw interceptions, to use his legs on a couple of key third downs a game, and to make ~2 NFL throws per game. His QBR was much higher than Purdy's, but again, they had different jobs.

He also only had to make a couple of passes a game for his team to win. He’s a more toolsy Mark Sanchez at this point
  11. Cam Williams could potentially flip to the left side too

  14. A couple of senior bowl risers who'd make sense for Houston at #23 if they're still on the board; Missouri DL Darius Robinson, and Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell I like DeJean, Mims (or other physically gifted OTs getting pushed down to #23 due to the strength of the OT class), Robinson, and Mitchell. #23 seems like it's too late to get the first wave of WRs, and too early for the late first/early second types (might be better off drafting a WR in the 2nd like Malachi Corley, if he's there). Maybe if they love one of those WRs (Coleman, Worthy, Mitchell, Wilson, Franklin, etc), they go ahead and take him, but I'd bet they have others (like the four I mentioned above) ahead of those guys Some good corners seem to be falling into the middle of the 2nd round, maybe one of those could drop to us? This class is loaded at interior OL, but it's tough to see us using a premium pick on one after taking Suggs in the 2nd last year

  16. Assuming he doesn’t blowout the combine, that’ll be too early for him
  17. I put the McVay offensive guys in the same tree as Shanahan

That seems crazy to me, but it would be cool
  19. If you could combine Kelly's running game and Kingsbury's passing game, you might have a borderline qualified NFL OC Coen to Tampa means yet another Shanahan tree OC in the league

    2024 NFL DRAFT

It might have been strategic. Keep your playing weight so you perform better at the practices by bulldozing OL (but don't weigh in), and then cut for the combine for testing
  21. Someone who I'm interested in as a mid-round RB is Ray Davis from Kentucky. This year they ran a similar offense to Slowik's, and he excelled in it
  22. Or he didn’t get any OC offers so he’s staying put
  23. Him successfully installing an offense away from Shanahan and under a defensive HC counts for a ton, especially considering it was with a rookie QB and an OL that was in shambles for most of the year. I thought this year would have still been early for him, but most of the league thought Tennessee was hiring him. He'll get hired next year as long as he doesn't fall on his face
  24. Or WR, or DB
