  1. Just cancelled the trip. Didn't want to get out there and a lockdown hit. Thanks anti-vaxxers. Up your noses with rubber hoses.
  2. This guy gets this thread and stays well within the parameters established by the title. Team Pile-More-Shit-on-Those-Nachos
  3. Laugh all you want but my kids liked Splash Town in San Antonio better than Schlitterbahn. No lines and more slides. Waiting in line for an hour for a ride that last 2 minutes is whack. And Splash Town was super cheap.
  4. Berlin has great public transport between the s-bahn and the u-bahn. Don't feel as if you have to stay super close to where your wife's friend may be. Most of the government offices are in the Mitte district. I am not sure many people live in that area--unless uber rich. That district has a lot going on, but that is not the part of Berlin that interests me most. But for sure, you want to go to Mitte and sight-see. A nice walk would be from the Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz. The Jewish Memorial is very near the B Gate and is a must. Museum Island near Alexander Platz is great for perhaps a full day. You can get passes. If you have time to kill, I might even take the bahn (I can't remember if it is an S or U stop) and get off at the Victory Column. And then walk all the way to Alexander Platz. It is probably about 3 miles but you will pass some cool stuff. If I remember correctly, part of the agreement on the wall coming down was that the west would not remove the war memorials and statues of the east. Many of these art installations are on the walk from the Victory Column to the Gate. From the Gate to Alexanderplatz is lots of shopping and such. There is are a couple of Berkinstock stores along this path if your family is wanting to score some of that gear. I always end up bringing back several pair although I don't have any myself. In fact, the Birkenstock store that is on Friedrichstrause (cross street of the Unter den Linden--the road you will be walking down) is very close to a good spot to stop for lunch. The Treffpunkt Berlin is a smallish pub/restaurant on Mittelstrause--not sure how to type that odd German B that makes the "strauss" sound." Nothing super special just a classic German lunch menu and some good beers. I always get a kick out of the signs labelling the genders of the restrooms downstairs. I'll leave that Easter egg for you to find. I'll log back in later and hit you up with a few more of my recs.
  5. Why did I watch that right as my wife is putting biscuits and breakfast sausage patties on the table. Now I am gonna have to skip breakfast. <side note = nah, I'm good. Not skipping breakfast.>
  6. I end up in Berlin fairly regularly for work. Fantastic city. Do you know what part of town you will be staying in while there?
  7. Unfortunately, I drive through Lamesa constantly on my way from Lubbock to San Angelo. One upside is if you have a craving for a chili relleno while cruising out this way, stop in at Pedroza's in Lamesa. That place is legit. https://www.facebook.com/pedrozas/ And anyone knockin' the Chihuahua taco/sandwich that with born at the Lamesa drive in has never had one. Recipes vary, but here is one that is close. Sometimes they throw on a hamburger patty. CHIHUAHUA SANDWICHYield: oneIngredients:2 fried corn tostada shells2 tbsp. chopped onions1 cup shredded cabbage1/2 cup chili, no beans1/2 cup pimiento cheese spreadDirections:Warm chili in a saucepan or microwave. Spread chili on one tostada shell. Top with onions and cabbage. Spread pimiento cheese on the other tostada shell. Put shells together and serve.from the Sky-Vue Drive In—Lamesa, TX.
  8. Thanks. Did a search and somehow missed that. I appreciate the help.
  9. Wife and I heading to San Diego Aug 9-14. Rented an AirBnB in the GasLamp Quarter a few blocks from Petco. Looks like we will hit up the afternoon game on Wednesday v. the Marlins. Otherwise, don't have anything really planned. Any ideas on restaurants, bars, or cool activities? I have been out there a few times and have toured the Midway and done a few pub crawls, but I am not expert on the area.
  10. Concan--float the river. see some tiddies. Boys love tiddies Gulport, MS/Gulf Shores, Al--not a bad drive. Nice beaches within reasonable drive Grand Canyon--did a road trip with daughter last year. We really liked it.
  11. Port Royal condos. It is what it is. I guess the leak and refund saved us from having to just sit in a condo and watch the rain. All my kids will be in either high school or college next year. This was likely our last trip all together. That is a more bitter pill to swallow than losing a vacation.
  12. Got there late Monday and did a walk down the beach. Have never seen the water so clean/clear. Very little seaweed. And hardly a soul in sight. Neither were expected. Woke up Tuesday morning to about half an inch of water in the condo and more pouring in through the ceiling and coming under the baseboards. Called the front desk and they asked if I wanted a refund because they weren’t sure how to stop the flooding that was hitting multiple units. Looked at the forecast and packed up and left. Still raining there this morning. Long drive from this far north to just turn back around. But oh well.
  13. I'll be there with family all next week starting on Monday staying at Port Royal. Planning on hitting up a baseball game in Corpus one night--the Hooks are in town all week. Throwing in some fishing gear--but not sure it is going to be worth the hassle. Please let me know if anyone hears of anything cool going on.
  14. Headed in to San Jose, Costa Rica, this morning to get my test before my flight tomorrow. There is a group of us so the testing folks are meeting us at the hotel at check in. On the whole, I feel Costa Rica is doing a decent job. All tourism-related staff (hotels, restaurants, guides) are wearing masks and many places are requiring you to wash hands and have temp taken before entering. I’d say about 70% of the locals I see on the streets are wearing masks. I’ve tried to be good about wearing one when walking around but have forgotten a few times. No one has said anything to me about it.
  15. Bird guide delivered.
  16. Dinner menu. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56af7a7455598614c4b45cd5/t/5ef3ab16897156101e52d14b/1593027351286/TL_RestMenuEN.pdf
  17. Trogon Lodge today up in the cloud forrest. Area attracts lots of birders and is apparently one of the few places you can see a Quetzal. I appreciate a good bird, but we are here just because. Guided bird tour at 5 am that I may make. Did a decent hike today and walked along a river with some small waterfalls. Sitting in the lodge bar know having a glass of wine before a nice dinner. They raise their own trout here in the cold, flowing water so I had smoked trout for lunch. Was excellent. Thinking about a steak for dinner.
  18. Downpour now. Made it just in time to Fuego.
  19. Spent the morning on a beach between here and Ovita. Sitting at Phat Noodle in Dominical now listening to it thunder but rain hasn’t hit yet. Walking down to Fuego as soon as I get the check here. Has been pouring every day from about 3 pm to about 7 pm. Yesterday was just a brief shower but the previous two it was a monsoon. Entering Into prime rain time today. I’m prepared to sit in Fuego until the world floats away.
  20. Yes. I am referring to the park only. Sorry for the confusion. The area is nice and there seems to be a lot going on. Wish we were here another day. Had wings and beer last night at the Jolly Roger and it was very enjoyable. The wings were the biggest I have ever had. Things are closing down early here so if you have a full day of outdoor activity there is not much time in the evenings for just sitting and drinking. I have been too exhausted to stay up late anyway so it has worked out fine. Headed to Dominical after breakfast. Hope to hit up Fuego.
  21. Third trip to Costa Rica and travel around the country rather than sit in one place so I feel I have seen lots of what CR has to offer. To me, there was nothing at Manuel Antonio that you can’t see in other places and with fewer people. It was a nice way to pass some hours, but I was not blown away nor was that my expectation going in. So my rec: Visit the park if you are in the area but I wouldn’t hop of the plane and drive straight there and not leave the area.
  22. Thanks. Saw the little food stand in the park but didn’t need it. Packed in some water and that was good enough. Park is closed today so about to take group to zipline and then afternoon on beach. Will look up your recs tonight for dinner and drinks. Hoping there is some transportation available. Off to Dominical in the morning.
