  1. Yeah almost no QBs are ready day 1. I can't name one week 1 true freshman starting QB in the last 10 years, for any school. Lawrence was the closest because he split playing time early on but he didn't actually start until week 5. But lol, Arch isn't reclassifying this late and he'd have to graduate HS so it's not like he can just wake up and do it.
  2. This is kinda my fear in a way. If Ewers doesn't win the job early in the year, what does Arch think? One redshirt year is fine but I doubt he wants 2. Although 3 years of Ewers would obviously be nice so maybe I shouldn't worry about that..
  3. People on this board handwring about 3-star recruits that won't be on campus for a year. Handwringing about the starting QB is the most sane things happening here.
  4. To play devils advocate, keeping the donors happy now has a pretty direct correlation with the roster/winning. It was counterproductive before NIL but the game has changed.
  5. Isn't it worse long-term if you start Ewers before he's ready, he struggles mightily, and you have to switch to Card? Now you're rolling with Card all year or flip flopping like last year. Worst case scenario. The reverse situation is you start with Card and then either A) he struggles and you can roll with Ewers all year without any more back and forth, or B) Card balls out which solves the problem. Not really. Better than last year? Sure. Pretty good? Doubtful
  6. The 9.95 narrative has changed very suddenly. Feels like the staff doing some intentional messaging. As he likes to say, @closetojumping might want to light his cigarette.. I still think Ewers starts game 3.
  7. Alright I watched the little 7-7 portion and Card definitely did look better in that. Ewers almost looked like he wasn't trying, kinda odd. So my final recap - Card looked good in 7-7, bad in 11-11. Ewers looked bad in 7-7, good in 11-11.
  8. I didn't watch the 7-7 but idk what he's talking about for the 11-11. Ewers looked way better.
  9. Just watched the 11-11. Would add a couple qualitative things to this: Ewers had another long TD pass dropped by Worthy (should've been an easy catch). Card's tipped ball INT could've been caught but it was a short route that was probably thrown a little too hard. Another one of his INTs was really a clear sack and he just kinda threw it up afterwards. I probably wouldn't really count that one. Overall Ewers seemed clearly better to me. But I know that's just one short practice worth of 11 on 11 only.
  10. True on them keeping suspense for clicks. But you're talking about one vanilla open practice - the decision isn't going to be based off that. And look, I hope it's Quinn too but I also understand why it might not be. He's a Freshman, they almost never start week 1. In fact, when he first committed here my assumption was that he'd become the starter after Bama (so as to not feed him to the wolves before he's ready). He'll get a lot of snaps vs ULM either way so the biggest difference is Bama and tbh it might be better to not subject him to that trauma
  11. Sorry I meant Card for two games then switch is like what Clemson did. Kelly Bryant started the first 2-4 games (idk) for them although with Lawrence getting real snaps even in that close A&M game. Game 3 or 4 they flipped it.
  12. Ruh roh, sure seems like the 9.95ers are preparing us for it to be Card. For all the shit we give FCB, he does tend to break a lot of the official news. At this point, wouldn't be surprised if it's Card for two games, then Ewers. Kinda like what Clemson did with Trevor Lawrence. But the only way Card goes beyond that is if he is balling out (which wouldn't be a bad thing).
  13. Like others, I disagree. He didn't reclassify until August, then spent the season as 4th/3rd string which I assume means very few reps during the season. Plus he missed a year of actual starting experience in high school. Honestly might have even be worse for development than just playing his senior year. Plus, one of the biggest differences about being a "redshirt" freshman is the extra year learning the system. Obviously he doesn't have that advantage.
  14. Does anyone else think it's kinda crazy how high the national expectations are for Ewers this soon? As others have said, he's basically a true freshman. I didn't hear a peep when Bryce Young redshirted (granted, Mac Jones was very good). No one expects Weigman or Klubnik to start at any point this season. Yet for some reason, it's a huge failure if Ewers isn't ready week 1? In fact, I can't even name a single true freshman QB who started week 1. Not Lawrence, not Fields, not Rattler, not Caleb, etc. I know, I know, Ewers isn't technically a true freshman. But just like all true freshman, he's played 4 seasons of football since he entered high school and like them, he's learning a new system this year. Being a redshirt typically means you had a year to learn the playbook. It also typically means you had a Senior season as a starter in HS. Not the case here. Anyway, thanks for attending my ted talk.
  15. So to recap the reports on the QBs from yesterday: Jeff Howe - Ewers slightly better OB - Totally even IT - Card more consistent, Ewers better deep. Pretty even overall. Nahlin still leans to Ewers being the eventual starter but neither would be surprised by anything. Fans - all saying Ewers better (probably some bias there) From Monday: Hookah Horn - Ewers had a great day No one else reported anything
  16. Kinda feels like the 9.95ers are running hit pieces on the kid this week. Also, I haven't seen a single 9.95er practice report from yesterday other than freaking Hookah Horn. None of them thought that'd be a relevant follow-up after the scrimmage?
  17. All fair but counterpoint to #3: IF Card really does clearly outplay Ewers in camp, the team would be witnessing that. Wouldn't it be worse culturally to name a starter that hasn't looked as good just because of their name/hype? Anyway, the above is why I think Sark is just waiting for Ewers to have a few days of superior play vs Card and then will name him starter.
  18. Jeez y'all - He literally said nothing about the team on reddit and he's on here telling you it's not about the team. Plus, what team news do you expect to be broken on a radio station? He probably got hired to work there or something, which apparently will indeed piss a bunch of Surly posters off
  19. Well looks like IT is already contradicting him on Banks...
  20. Are we supposed to believe this guy? Feel like these alleged IT insiders are full of shit
  21. Sark's full comments on Agiye are actually pretty good. Cliff notes - it wasn't just the one event and they're helping him with a plan to get his head on straight. I interpreted it as, the dude needs some mental health support / counseling and they're working with him to get it, then will bring him back when he's in a better place. (starts around 2:20 of the video)
  22. It's quite common to hold kids back in pre-K or kindergarten and it's not for athletic reasons.
  23. So he probably got held back in pre-K, that doesn't really change the point. He's had the same football experience as a true freshman.
  24. My point is that I think a lot of uber-rich UT alums feel like there are much better uses of their money than spending it to win football games. Whether that's the educational side of UT, buying a vacation house, other charities, hookers, investments that actually return money, or whatever. Ex: Michael Dell. He probably doesn't have a moral issue with paying players. He just thinks a new computer science building is a lot more important than football.
