All three phases were inconsistent. Terrible, terrible at times and bright spots at others. It is what it is. I’m most worried about the defense. Same sloppy tackling as usual.

Yeah.  I was worried last week.  UTEP didn't take much advantage of us leaving receivers free for those 5-7 yard slants.  This week the tackling was sloppy in addition.  And the secondary gave up on some plays.

If we don’t revert to Herman play calling most of the second half we score 70 and win easy.

Nah.  It was holding or chop block on every first down.

And none of them were bad calls.  Just sloppy by the Oline.

Damn!!!  Sam told Herman at 3 minutes..."they left us too much time.  We are gonna tie this and win in ot."  Balls baby.

I was thinking with that long run for that TD, we've got a chance!  Lot of time left.  I felt better than before they scored.

Honestly the most beer I've consumed during a game in years.  I'm in deep shit with my better half for drunkingly yelling at one of the bullshit plays in the second half (do not ask me to remember which one) and scaring the hell out of my 8-month-old and my 5-year-old.  Weirdly, my 2-year-old thought it was funny as shit.  She and I will sleep on the couch together tonight.

Every time I took a sip bad things happened.  So I set it on the table through the last 3:41 and OT!  Then I started again!

Brando and Tillman made a good point - the only one of the game. There’s gonna be several 1 and 2-loss conference champions this year. I said Covid isn’t an excuse for our piss poor D, but it’s enough to trip up any team. I can’t see many if any unscathed teams this year. I thought Urban saying OU had little shot of making the playoff now was just wrong.

Well I think you also saw it in the SEC.  No warmup games.  Georgia looked like what Uga leaves in the back of his doghouse for the first half.  LSU lost.

Lulz... Serious fucking lulz.. lackadaisical? That's your word for it? Championship teams?

    Okay.. okay . Okay... Okay..

Every championship team wins a game they shouldn't when they have a bad day.

There were lots of areas of concern, but the main thing was that we just didn't seem to be into the game.  No intensity for 56 1/2 minutes.  They out hustled us every single play.

Frequently yes. I remember Roschon getting within 6 inches of a first down and they marked him a full yard short. The play before he got it on 4th down with the scrum push.

That one stood out.  There were a bunch of others.

  8. Every championship team seems to need to have 1 win like this.  Positive sign?

But we have to get some pass rush or teams will eat us up.  I made the comment for the UTEP game that they could throw 5-7 yard pitch and catch every play.  Tech took advantage of that.  But mainly they outhustled us for 56:19.  Their secondary outfought our receivers.  Their receivers outfought our defenders.  It made me nervous in the first half.  We just looked kind of lackadaisical.

Absolutely fucking ridiculous officiating not to call the blatant holding on the game deciding play.

Fuck Big 12 refs. The only reason Bowman got the pass off was because they held Graham.

Yeah.  Really blatant.  And the replay refs too.  Overturning the call?  Missing the step out of bounds.

And I'm not going to read through 80 pages of bitching, but did they mark the Texas offense 1 yard short on just about every play in the 2nd half?

I remember doing the same damn thing while watching the game live.

Your post made me rewatch our last touchdown drive in that game just now, and I counted (conservatively) that we could have removed an additional 1:50 off the clock on our final drive by just allowing the play clock to run down further before each play.  We snapped the ball on one play inside Tech's red zone with 30 seconds left on the play clock.  Infuriating!  When Tech got the ball back for the last time, they had 1:29 left.

Gideon should've still caught that ball, but really the game should never have gotten to the point where it was in Gideon's hands.

Yeah.  I remember saying, "Man we scored too quick!!!"

We played that about as well as we could have since we needed a TD to go ahead.
Even without Crabtree doing his thing, they likely get a 40ish yard FG to win.

No their kicker was horrible.  Its why they cut it so close.  Had Crabtree been tackled in bounds, the game was over.  There was only 1 second left when he scored.

I didn't spend much time looking at the Tech/HBU "highlights", but it looked to me like the Tech safeties just weren't playing their position, to put it bluntly.

HBU didn't drive methodically. Rather, they scored on uncontested pitch and catch type passes where it looked like the safeties just stood deep in "Cover-2" position and sort of didn't cover their side of the field. The receivers would be released deep by the CBs. The safeties were uninterested in the results until the receivers trotted by them with the ball.

Don't know if that's something you can correct in practice in a week.

I think the highlights are in post 157 just a couple above yours!

  13. Watching some of the 1995 Texas-Baylor game on the LHN last night.

Shon Mitchell was really good before his injury.  He was thought of as the best running back on that 1996 team ahead of two future NFL rushing champs, Ricky Williams and Priest Holmes.  That was an incredible backfield.

Probably not worth another thread, so I'll say it. I dont like the design of the "We Are One" patch. It looks like an advertisement. Maybe the real issue is how much bullshit we have on the front of the jersey to begin with. Look at Sterns who has a captain patch, too. It's starting to look like a goddamn NASCAR car.

Optimally I would put the "We Are One" where the B12 logo is, because why the fuck do we need that on there, and ditch the Horns on the collar.

And before anyone gets their briefs in a tizzy, I have NO issue with the message and think the players are well within their rights to ask for it on the jersey, it just seems like it was kind of rushed from a design standpoint and that we can do better.

Already have a Nike ad and a Big 12 ad.  We are one is relatively muted and relatively non-controversial.  Does kind of remind me of a bank logo.

  15. First Texas game, vs. Texas A&M 1976 in then Memorial Stadium.  Ugly game.  Ugly weather.  Even worse after the game.  Fog set in on my drive to Houston on 290 so thick until I got to Brenham I couldn't even see the side of the road to pull over.  I was scared to death someone would be stopped in the road.  I could barely see beyond my hood.

(Scipio Tex) 2020 UTEP Post-Mortem: Offense

    WR/TE

The RBBC (running back by committee) is joined by the WRBC and TEBC. The beauty of having a lot of skill options and an effective OC and QB running point guard is that it's hard for a defense to cheat towards tendency or personnel. We could see the downside of not having one overwhelming guy at WR or TE if a good defense plays physical man against us with a talented secondary and strong pass rush and guys need to win 1 on 1 consistently, but I'm having trouble finding that team in the Big 12. Particularly after looking at today's scores. Holy moly. So we'll deal with Alabama in the playoffs when we get there.

Josh Moore totaled 6 catches for 127 yards against UTEP's fairly awful corners. And yeah, that safety's angle wasn't so great on his game opening 78 yard TD jaunt either. But you can see Moore's quickness and ability to separate. Moore is also comfortable in multiple spots and that will be important when Jake Smith returns. Tarik Black got tripped up by the turf monster twice and he needs to learn to keep two hands on the ball in a crowd, but I like his effort, route-running, and how he uses his length to attack the ball. He doesn't passively receive the pass - he snatches the ball. Really pleased to see him go for 5-80-1 td in his Texas debut.

Speaking of transfers, Brenden Schooler, who has been here a week, exploited single coverage for 2-65-1 td, including a sideline tightroping 40 yard touchdown after stiff arming the UTEP corner into the field turf (and the hoards of crickets that apparently reside there). Anyone still mad he's on the team? Schooler did drop a Thompson pass that he should have had, so his status as my adopted son is still in question.

Jordan Whittington looked great until his knee injury. 2-45 in the passing game, including a sideline catch where he showed strength and burst, and a nicely schemed 15 yard gain on the reverse. Best hopes for him, but as expected, the lengthy persistence of his hernia issue is going to have downstream effects for some time. Marcus Washington had 2-43-1 td on a couple of nice routes. Also dropped a gorgeous Thompson pass. He took a shot and held on to the ball on his 26 yard catch.

What's more surprising: that Kai Money caught 4 balls and a touchdown? Or that Kai Money is a white guy from Brownsville? Eagles made a nice play late on a deflection off of the defender for his only catch, a 35 yard touchdown. He also ran some routes where he didn't separate and he couldn't come up with a semi-high difficulty misfire from Ehlinger. #13 seeing Ehlinger throw for 400+ in a half without any contribution from him in the box score is good for realigning his perspective.

Texas played all four tight ends. I liked what I saw from Brayden Liebrock. He moves well and he's really comfortable split out (2-11). He's also an enthusiastic blocker in space. I'd like to see more. Cade Brewer caught a well-schemed open TD throw (Whittington's pre-snap motion and Ehlinger's sell make UTEP's secondary bite hard; Josh Moore is also wide open in the end zone on the same play) and some other good concepts. I didn't see Wiley get any targets. Epps had a big run (credits as a rush) for 40 yards on the Card option but he didn't nab any balls in the passing game.

LIebrock also hustled and got Black's fumble when UTEP had two guys with better shots.

Eagles one catch was phenomenal on an underthrown ball, but mostly he looked like he wasn't focused.  I think Sam had 4 of his incompletions thrown towards Eagles.

Yeah, the homer network that brought in Andre Ware to call a game and then ran a short segment of Texas lowlights against him.

They fucking suck. And now I want VY to have a talk show on the network and invite his buddies Leinart and Bush to be guests so they can talk about how much better the Fox Sports studio crew is than any of the ones on ESPN.

Did you have the same problem with the ads I had?  They would run those UT public service ads like the Freshman Research Initiative and the sound was way off from the video.  It was worse than watching a dubbed Japanese Godzilla movie.

I'd seen those ads before and they didn't have the same problem.  But they had it all night.

I can't think of a season opener in quite a while that was more enjoyable than last night. Maybe it's just because I didn't think we would get to a point where the game last night was going to be possible. Everything seemed to be clicking from the get go. Yeah, it's UTEP but offense looked great. Defense was strong. Dicker needs to make his field goals. Overall, a nice way to open the season before they inevitably crush my soul.

I was concerned about the secondary. Most of the game, the UTEP QB could have thrown 5-7 yard passes to the right without the guy being covered.  We were outnumbered over there frequently, 3 to 2 defenders (not counting the safety 30 yards back) or 2 to 1 defender.  They didn't take advantage of it very often.

I’m down for some band dork discussions.

MLB is a snoozer and the NBA is sterile.   NHL is pretty solid on tv though ... but the stars only play every couple days.

Perhaps some talk about the shitty band uniforms or the pace of play on the eyes or some such.

Band uniforms.  THERE is a tradition we could change.

Dance squad uniforms-get rid of the chaps!
