  1. Just saw on Twitter that it's John Mueller's birthday today. Roadtrip to Granger to wish him a happy bday?
  2. If you're on the hunt for good char-grilled oysters in New Orleans there's a guy who posts up in front of Celebration Hall on St Bernard on Sunday afternoons. $15 per dozen.
  3. In 2000 Austin had Sam's, Iron Works, County Line, Willie's, House Park, Lewis', and a few others that are escaping me. Nobody, not one of them was doing barbecue in the Taylor/Lockhart-style. When Mueller opened up in Robert Shaw's old Stop and Swat grocery store on Manor Road the lines began forming immediately. By that point I had eaten a few hundred barbecue meals in Travis County and a "line" before then meant that there were two people in front of you at Sam's. Who was working the counter at Mueller's? Aaron Franklin. You can say whatever you want about Mueller's business practices but the simple fact is this: without Mueller the modern barbecue scene in Austin would look a lot different today.
  4. I'm heading up there next week. Really looking forward to trying it. The modern Austin barbecue scene would not exist without him. His old Manor Road joint was the gold standard back in the day (19 years ago)
  5. We ate there just before Chef Rushing left to move to the UK and it was bland and overpriced. We had hopes the new chef was better. Antoine's is still firing on all cylinders if you need that old school fine dining fix. We had two great meals there in the past few months.
  6. We make chili year round but normally the gumbo pot only gets pressed into use from November through February. If Fat Tuesday falls in March we alter the plans as that day always sees a big pot on the range.
  7. John Mueller has opened a new joint inside Granger City Brewing up in Williamson County. Who's been? How was the barbecue?
  8. I picked up a few pounds of andouille at Best Stop a couple weeks ago. Big batch of gumbo coming soon.
  9. Leah Chase does a good gumbo z'herbes on Holy Thursday if y'all are in New Orleans that day, Thursday April 18th this year
  10. There's a gumbo pop up in Austin this Sunday, January 20th at the Tamale House on 6th street https://do512.com/events/2019/1/20/scrumptious-chef-9th-anniversary-party-new-orleans-creole-gumbo-pop-up
  11. You'll be a ten minute walk from Foeder's, one of the best draft beer bars in the city. The owner's a complete Belgian beer geek, prices are not out of control. It's a fun place to while away an evening. You're also near Leeman Doner, one of the best super cheap Mediterranean joints in the city. You can eat here for about five bucks, and it's good. The best coffeeshop near the hotel is called Katsu.
  12. Nobody outside the neighborhood knows of the best one in New Orleans. It's a pot roast po boy served at Freret Beer Room near Cure on Freret Street. Local beef cooked for 12 hours.
  13. Mendez Cafe on Bartholomew is my favorite old school Tex Mex diner in a city with thousands of them. They've been putting out combination platters and tacos since the 80s. It's tiny and you won't spot a single tourist in the joint.
  14. Why the Costco disposable? At a picnic?
  15. You can also reduce it down with onion to make a killer enchilada sauce
  16. District has pretty donuts but they don't taste nearly as good Mrs Johnson's on Airport
  17. Next time y'all are in town hit Terranova Superette for the best muffaletta in the city. Twice the meat as Central Grocery. They only make 10 on Saturday morning and when they sell out it's a seven day wait for the next batch. It's a family of old-school Italian grocers running the joint.
