This message sent by Senator Markey is a good reason, among several others, for him to have kept his senate seat over Joe Kennedy. I would bet one of the more delighted people to see that message to McConnell would be Congresswoman Cortez. Let’s keep those bills coming and put senators on the record of being against a voting rights bill named after not only an icon of the Civil Rights movement, but also one of the greatest Americans to have ever lived. It will not end well for the senators who want to halt societal progress and the ability of the entire populace to exercise their right to vote.

So, Biden making money out of office and basically retired = bad. Trump and his family all making a shitpot of money while he's in office = good. Is that right?

The twisting and turning required of a human being’s cognitive dissonance to square those two things up in the mind is something the finest pretzel makers would find impressive.

There's no reason whatsoever not to completely legalize cannabis in all forms unless you are just hellbent on being a priggish dick.

This pretty much encapsulates the thoughts I have on this. There is no valid reason, at all, for anyone to not want it legalized. Get this done and move onto the next bill that needs to be passed.

I'd say that's a distinction with little difference.  Pope Francis, for all his intelligence, earnest study, and fine moral character, does not understand anything beyond the outline and stereotypes of a mature, sexual relationship.  None of them do.  Not a single fucking one of them.  Yet, they set the rules on contraception, divorce, and gay marriage.  And people actually listen to them.

I was raised Catholic.  I credit a scholarship to a Catholic high school to give me the stability to get into a good college.  I've known a lot of priests, and even corresponded with one for a few years.  Like any other profession, some are really good people and some are assholes.  But I would never listen to any of them when it comes to real life relationships.  You might as well take fashion advice from a blind man.

Catholicism could do itself a really big favor if it gave priests the ability to marry again. If Francis did that it would be the biggest single positive reform passed by the church since its inception. I would also say go a step further and also allow priests to be openly homosexual and also have the right to marriage. If they are serving the same God that I am, and I would think they believe so, this is a necessary step. Shunning human beings because of their sexual orientation is a hindrance to the church as a whole. You are missing out on an integral part of the human experience when you do not have romantic relationships.

I remember one time she was passed out on the floor and a friend saw her and didn't realize she was laying right in front of him. I mentioned something about her after we left and he says to me "I thought that was a mop in front of me on the floor. Had no idea it was your dog!" She is really quiet for a small dog.

  7. This was a fun read from the OP right before the election. This place has a lot of intentional humor which is cool and partially what makes the site a great read. Unintentional humor is fun too! Bolded for emphasis.

Geez, Brisket, you are so melodramatic. You act like you have some great cause.  You don't have shit for a cause. You are aligning with the same old corruptocrats who have been enriching themselves on the government dole for decades.  This election shouldn't be close. I have many conservative friends. Many if not most of them are tired of Trump's act. He's the most narcissistic guy I've ever seen.  Almost all of them will stick with him because he's better than the alternative, and they feel like he's a least on their side. All you had to do was nominate somebody who could plausible pretend to be a moderate left of center guy. And you would have won easily. Instead you nominate somebody who is corrupt even by Washington standards of corruption. Somebody who picks as his running mate a politician who is  somehow left of Bernie Sanders.  This is going to be a close election because you guys have picked a guy who spent his vice presidency vacuuming up millions of dollars from Russia, China, and the Ukraine and using his drug addicted son as the bagman.  And selling out America in the process.  If you guys lose, you have nobody to blame but yourself. Your candidate stinks and your platform has been hijacked by the far left,  and has zero appeal to the middle class. And if you win, you haven't won a great victory, you have just elected a guy who will continue Washington corruption as usual.

I am a bit conflicted on how to best deal with someone who traffics in lies as a way of life. The spreading of a lie like this is damaging because her constituents hear this and it reaffirms what they think of Democrats. Her statement is not based in fact or really anything resembling reality. I think the media and prominent Democrats, looking at The Squad here, need to pounce on this lie and just shut it down completely. Any of the four of them plus Katie Porter is pretty good at this.

Thank you for that invite and I appreciate the kindness. If getting to there was a bit easier for me I would go because I like to experience different areas of the country and I have never been anywhere near there. You might get a random PM from me in the future though about stopping through there. I was looking at my training schedule and it appears it starts in May and runs through the end of July. I think we are given 10 days off in the middle of that and I am definitely going to get out of here for all 10 of those days and go explore somewhere I have not yet been to.

I hate the people that profit off racism.

I got past feeling hatred towards human beings who espouse these beliefs. I feel I think a certain sense of sadness to see people spend a lifetime hating others because of their skin color. You get one shot at life and it gets wasted on an irrational dislike and hatred of a race of people because they look different. All that hate just burns you up and destroys the soul.

Ruh, roh.  The amendment to legalize weed in NJ passed last November (I voted for it).  My kids are NOT going to like this.

I have yet to ever smoke weed in my life, but I am 100 percent for it being legalized on a national level. I passed on listening to the audio from that governor. He should have been called out on the spot for lying.

That we are still having a debate in 2021 about this being legal nationally is somewhat silly. I know conservatives thoroughly enjoy invoking quotes from the founding fathers when it strikes their fancy, but were most of them around at the moment they’d be appalled that marijuana isn’t legal.

They say the quiet parts out loud.

If I did not know who he was and had never heard him speak I would still be leery of him because his facial expressions and body language are just off. I am certain we have all crossed paths with a person or two where we know something isn’t right. This is the vibe I get before the blatant racism comes flowing out so easily.

I will never understand racism beyond it being an aspect of society that is absolutely one of the most harmful things ever devised in the minds of human beings. My gosh we are all just people and we should celebrate that we are different instead of having to read about stories like this.

  13. Here is what is relevant. The governor of New York appears to have a mountain of evidence building against him. If he truly cares about the people of New York he would step aside. If he truly cared he would also have never sent his constituents to their death. Hiding the nursing home death total is is something a person that enjoys power would do. The totality of evidence thus far points towards that.

He has to go and New York needs to move forward with a leader with better qualities of empathy and respect for the lives of every person in this state.

EMPATHY in our leaders means something. it means a lot

Treating human beings with respect and dignity shows a great deal about who someone is. He said he would be the president of all Americans and he has stuck to that. His ability to show empathy is probably the best trait he has as a person and leader. Also it is his ability to identify so readily with tragedy that is endearing to people. Our society needs much more empathy and positivity and less misplaced anger and outrage.

I had the opposite thought. As a married person with a child, covid has been irritating but never dark or challenging. Remembering my single self, I know it would have been much harder for me then. But everyone is different.

I have read and listened to too many folks who have not shared enjoyable experiences being around their family so much for the last year. I feel sad when I hear that because what an opportunity to grow closer with those you love and care about the most. I am glad that you seem to have had a good experience being around your family more.

Being single for me made for a 2020 that wound up being a great year personally. I feel a bit guilty saying that still because of what we endured as a country over the last year.

    Are you single or married?

Not married yet, but I understand the challenges faced by those who have them. I will gladly welcome those challenges when they come even though I have an aversion to noise and am comfortable by myself. I look at the world a little differently after what happened to me personally in 2020 so that might have something to do with having somewhat rose colored glasses about this subject.

  17. I think that long-term the mental health of the American worker will be better if they either work at home or have a flex schedule where they are in the office a couple of days per week. This pandemic has shown that the old way of doing things was not good for the overall health of people who were commuting into work. There are certain jobs where you have to be there in-person. I will have one of those jobs starting in the fall. However, if you are in a career where working from home is an option it should be pursued if your company will still allow it once the pandemic ends.

Good on Megan Markle and Gabrielle Union admitting to depression and suicidal thoughts.  It lets people know it's OK not to be OK.

Slowly, but surely society is coming out from under the stigma attached to depression. So many of us have dealt with it for a time and I am sure many find it an ongoing battle, but it is nice to see people embraced when they feel depressed instead of feeling isolated and alone.

Never heard of her, but that sounds great.

I did not know who this woman was either, but it’s good she was able to take a stand against the tenets that have been put forth by the Death Cult that she cannot abide by. Perhaps in certain ways it can be construed as being easier for her to do this because she is well off so taking a principled stand is not as hard for her. In her sphere of influence she can hopefully have a positive effect on at least a fraction of the people who like the work she done prior to this. Even just bringing a small segment of people out of the Death Cult and back to the land of the living so to speak is far more preferable to none at all.

Also, things that keep kids engaged need to be seen as essential to their education just like math and reading. That means sports, art, drama, music, scouts, and other things that don’t show up on standardized test questions need broad support especially in the most underperforming areas. Chasing the almighty test score might not be the best way to develop an educated populace.

If there is a single thing that needs to be removed from how we judge intelligence and knowledge it is this. Our current model of education just teaches to a test. Whether it is yearly tests or a test in a class covering a portion of material being studied, we are failing the youth of this country with this mode of education.

I am also a very, very big proponent of the arts being a bigger part of the educational experience. I do not believe we encourage this enough in our youth. Creative expression within children is stunted in our current model of education. I feel that one of the biggest ways to open the minds of children is to make teaching the arts a bigger part of the curriculum, especially in areas where the schools are on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. I find that we continue having a national conversation about how to reform education and keep students and parents interested and invested in their educational experience, but then I look the actuality of what is taking place and I see an experience that is dated and not conducive to fostering a learning environment that would make children excited about school. That's a lot of words to say that I want to see us as a country put a far bigger emphasis on the arts and not teaching to tests anymore and instead teaching in a way where both students and parents feel invested and excited about the education their kid is receiving.
