  1. I believe the reason for the appeal was that the sentences were consistently under the sentencing guidelines. I'm not a lawyer, but the conviction would seem to be the due process. Once convicted it doesn't seem like the sentence is anything that would change due process. It's set by the judge, supposedly based on fairly strict guidelines, so it seems much more administrative to me.
  2. My understanding is that either the sentences will be upheld or extended but not reduced. I could be wrong but that's how I read it.
  3. She crashed it to ruin it for everyone else. Duh.
  4. Oh boy! Those were interesting times eh? I was in Korea when the Berlin wall came down and we were on full alert for 48 hours. I can't imagine what it was like in Germany.
  5. I got one of these a few years back. It was me and I did pass the bus while the arm was down and the lights were on. It was stopped at a RR crossing about on the way to the Bus Barn with no kids on the bus on a 4 lane road. I threw it in the trash. I've gotten periodic collection letters but those went the same route.
  6. Related story. DPS Cousin-in-Law was in a high speed chase with four or five other various cops and they were debating how to get the guy to stop so CIL says he'll pit the guy. They are all flying down I-35 at speeds approaching 120 mph and sure enough he pits the guy and they both lose control. Both end up in the median in a cloud of dust and CIL realizes his crotch is soaking wet. He's sitting there thinking "Did I wet my pants?" Luckily he just squeezed his Big Gulp all over his pants.
  7. One of my cousins is married to a DPS trooper. He's about to retire but he drove one of the 5.0 Mustangs when they first got them. My brother went on a ride along with him and they were sitting on I35 eating snacks in the middle of the night clocking cars. Dude would pretty much ignore anyone going less than 20 over the limit because he liked to chase the real speeders. Guy goes by going over a hundred and next thing my bro knows he's stuck to his seat as they scream out of the median. Trooper is eating M&Ms with his big gulp between his legs, talking on the radio, slinging dirt while shifting gears and turning on the lights/siren. Dude was having the time of his life and my brother was having a heart attack at the tender age of 16.
  8. I got news for Tommy Boy. The military pays travel expenses for medical care for all kinds of shit. If you need specialty care that you can't get where you're stationed they will pay for the travel and the care. At least that's the way it was when I was in. All the ruling said was that abortion law is up to the states. Didn't say anything about folks going where they want to. Dumb fuck.
  9. The vast majority of people on this thread are men. We have a hard time seeing things from the female perspective so we tend to frame al these issues from the male side. I know lots of men who are happily married or in relationships, or just have satisfying dating lives and not all, but most of the really successful ones see women as people. Companions not receptacles. Having three daughters has really pushed home to me how often these men who see themselves as alphas see women as objects for them to obtain. They don't want a companion they want a trophy or a conquest. The successful ones get laid a lot but don't ever seen to find a mate. The unsuccessful ones are the passport bros. I agree it's a complex problem that doesn't lend itself to a simple answer but that's been my observation. I was raised to see women as companions and friends as well as sexual partners and it's cost me getting laid a few times, but it's also lead to a fulfilling married and social life. If your sole criteria is looks, you best look good yourself or have a lot of money/fame or you're probably going to be disappointed.
  10. $8000 is the "we don't want to do it" price. I've been going to the same guy for years and when I call him with something and I can tell he doesn't want to do it I get the $1500 quote. I then go to my back up shop and if they want to do it I get a decent price.
  11. That's for jellyfish, and I offered but she said she'd rather just deal with the pain.
  12. My wife stepped on one when and got hit on the ankle. She's got a pretty high pain tolerance and it was clear she was in agony. For future reference, the hospital filled a bucket with hot ass water, like 120 F and put her foot in it and it was instantaneous relief. The heat breaks the toxin down. If you get stung get whatever is stung in some hot water and you're good.
  13. You've clearly made up your mind on this so I'll leave you your illusions. Let's just say that the vast majority of people who study this for a living don't agree with you.
  14. Dude, no one is saying we can control the climate, only that for all of history biological organisms have changed the climate. We are doing that right now. It is actually changing right now and we are doing it. It's going to cause widespread changes to the rest of the ecosystem. It already is. Most organisms aren't as adaptable as we are so many are dying because they can't adapt fast enough. Humans are doing it, just like the algae pumped the atmosphere full of oxygen and changed it millions of years ago. No one is saying other things don't also affect the climate, they do. It's a complex system. No shit. If you don't think organic life is one of those factors I don't know what to tell you. It's not an issue of control it's an issue of damage mitigation.
  15. You do know why we have an oxygen rich atmosphere right? Because extremely successful organisms (like us) made it that way. It also resulted in large extinctions and changed life on earth. "Control" is not the issue. The issue is tipping the balance and changing the ecosystem that we all rely on to survive. It's happening even as we speak and you're lying to yourself if you don't think we are doing to ourselves.
  16. Sure. Just keep telling yourself that.
  17. And we'd do it all at night when we can see better than they can in the daytime.
  18. I'm normally pretty sanguine about regular season games, but I saw a lot of loser baseball last night. Too many lazy plays.
  19. If it were my call I would have put the runner back on 3rd and made them earn it. It was obstruction but I don't think I could say for sure she would have scored.
  20. Watched ever minute of it this year. Been a while since I did that, but needed a break from in-laws in town for graduation. It never gets old. Incredible what those men did and how Hanks and Spielberg delivered the goods. Cried like a baby at least three times and thanked God yet again that I was never called to go into combat. That shit changes you and rarely for the better.
  21. One of my favorite examples of how the US Military operates was a story about a written exam given to Lieutenants in a leadership school. The only question was something like this: You are ordered to put up a new flag pole. Resources available: 1. 40 foot flag pole. 2. pre dug 5 foot hole of appropriate diameter. 3. 2 lengths of 50 foot rope. 4. 1 Sergeant and 5 Privates. Describe your actions to raise the pole. Most would go into incredible details in how they would erect the pole. The correct answer was "Sergeant, put up that flagpole".
  22. Let's just say I'm glad Make em eat Taco Bell is not in charge.
  23. Keep your head on a swivel, kid.
  24. I didn't look it up or anything but I'll bet the East team has twice as many people as the West team.
  25. Like the Big 10 would even take them. Talk about a culture clash.
