  1. Bad movie, but not close to the fish fucking one. Or Crash. Or Shakespeare in Love. Those are the low-hanging recent fruit. Don't get me started on Midnight Cowboy over Butch Cassidy. Watch them both now. And then there's the Artist, which was like a grad school film experiment. Not "bad", but not a film most people would ever sit through.
  2. Fair enough. I misunderstood your point. It had a plot. It was fine. To me it was like giving best picture to John Dies at the End, which was also fine. Do the drugs help or hurt? I guess they never hurt. BTW, I did not know this, but today I found out that one of the two directors of EEAAO was the guy uncontrollably hitting things with his dick in the Turn Down for What video, and that he was also responsible for that "Omniboat" movie where a guy fantazises that he's an ultrafast cigarette boat called "Lay'n Pipe." Together they also made Swiss Army Man, where Paul Dano rides the farting corpse of Harry Potter around like a jetski. Those make EEAAO seem like a Frank Capra film.
  3. It was when Annie Hall beat out Star Wars.
  4. Sorry, this kind of smug, self-satisfied comment just pisses me off. It’s a fucking movie. Its OK to not like a movie. Or even think it’s not as good as other movies. You liked it. I thought it was a little silly and precious. That’s fine. Maybe we could have discussion about what you liked or didn’t like? No, I just didn’t “get it” so there’s no point. If you’re not interested in discussion, fine, but don’t grenade over the idea that you understand some transcendent meaning that we’re just not capable of grasping.
  5. She was the only good thing in ZeroZeroZero but I didn’t see her movie this year. Three years in a row - just bet on the picture nominee I liked least. I guess it was better than Crash or Shakespeare in Love.
  6. They should give the EEAAO guys extended time. You should get bonus talking time for the third award plus per night.
  7. He was definitely pulling the “British and above it all” card. The Vanity Fair thing was funny, though. Of course
  8. You obviously didn’t see me with my kid pretending I agreed that Ultron was the greatest film since Cars.
  9. It better be. It’s not exactly your budget choice. Hence the meeting. Guy could put in a word grant-wise.
  10. Kids are supposed to meet with a Colgate alum Friday to talk about college. That will be interesting.
  11. I absolutely agree on the dream/fantasy nature of that scene. But also Really been a while since I’ve thought about a film as a puzzle this much.
  12. Tennessee stadium didn’t bother me, and the October colors around it are stunning. One of the prettiest settings for a football game I’ve ever experienced. Baton Rouge is like a lot of Louisiana-fun but slightly terrifying. College Station is is a shit stadium in a shithole. But I got lost and their fans couldn’t have been- ah, I can’t do it. That’s my list.
  13. Fascinating. I hadn’t heard that theory but it also makes sense. That movie is getting better and better with further reflection. It’s obviously a nod to Kubrick - he was sort of Field’s mentor (Field played Nick Nightengale). So maybe it’s meant to be dissected rather than watched.
  14. I’ve now seen 8 of the 10. Nothing really just did it for me. Watched Triangle last night and enjoyed it. So brutal and over the top. Really nasty and absurd. A cute little indie movie. But not really much to it. It felt like you were looking back at a now-famous director’s first film. Tar was actually very similar in tone and message to me but obviously much bigger in scale and production. But Tar did that thing where the setup was two hours and the movie itself was 20 minutes. We learned and learned like going to a seminar. Then with all that background, the actual plot was pretty thin and short. I do like the prevailing theories that she’s really the suicide and/or that the only “real” parts of the story are from her childhood home forward, though. Movies that can make you think about stuff like that are pretty decent. EEAOA was just another dumb Rick & Morty multiverse gag to me. It’s a lot more than a little too twee and cute for me. Dildo joke fight scenes. Marvel movie for guys who memorize South Park episodes. Probably my least favorite of the eight. Women Talking was exactly what you think. You endure it and feel superior for doing so. Same with All Quiet, which i have now seen in three different versions. That alone discounts it for me. The Fabelmans wasn’t a remake but it sure felt like I’ve seen that before. Everything felt like another movie, which I guess was part of the conceit/concept. I thought it was a fine Boomer nostalgia piece. Didn’t see Elvis because Australia and especially Moulin Rouge were worse than anesthesia-free dental work. Didnt see Avatar. Sat through all 27 hours of the first one and recall nothing else about it. It’s probably similar. Top Gun is a great fun movie, but that’s not what this award is about. Banshees was far and away the best of the nominees IMHO (with the obvious caveat that I didn’t see two of them). Funny, sad, over-the-top in places but also played down. But still it wasn’t transcendent or anything. It was “really pretty good.” Blanchett should be a lock but probably won’t win because of all the EEAAO hype. Farrell should also win but won’t - then again, I didn’t see the Whale. Director should go to McDonagh or Field but probably will be EEAAO again.
  15. Saw this got bumped and was expecting to see that the eclipse got cancelled
  16. A lot of you need to find a doctor and get some ADHD meds. If you can't sit through a game longer than 3 hours, that's a "you" problem. 3 and 4 make comebacks really difficult - like they are in the NFL. Generally, the sped-up time rules are the reason the NFL is so damn boring to me. It feels like you're watching a badly-curated highlight reel.
  17. I think that Pollan book has a show on Netflix or HBO
  18. They both make fun of how ridiculous James Bond movies are.
  19. Both Casino Royales. They make the same point from very different perspectives.
  20. I like thinking that the conference or the schools give a shit what I think. It’s a nice way to imagine the world.
