People say this shit all the time but the numbers don’t lie. Other than watching the final minutes of a midmajor upset, no one watches those games.

This year should have been the wet dream of everyone who loves the underdog aspect of the tournament, with only a single P5 team making the final four…and guess what…

    https://nypost.com/2023/04/04/mens-march-madness-final-tv-ratings-hit-record-low/

    https://thespun.com/college-hoops/sports-world-reacts-to-mens-final-four-television-ratings

Forth lowest final four ever (only saved from last place due to the Miami/UConn game) and the LOWEST men’s basketball championship game ever recorded by Neilson.

I get it, unpopular opinion but the mid majors are costing the P5 teams money, it’s a simple fact and a weird inverse.

Nobody watches mid major games (omitting some Big East teams and Gonzaga) until the final minutes if they have a realistic chance at an upset. If the upset happens then sport writers (and now social media) romanticize the “underdog” story and hype it after the fact.

The problem is that after the fact doesn’t make money for the broadcasters and advertisers. The games that make the most money are your 8/9 games between mid level ACC and Big 12 teams that people watch from beginning to end, but those aren’t as fun to write about or read about nationally the next day.

Sports journalists love the underdog but the broadcasters do not (see this year as a reason why) because no one will watch their next game either, they just assume they’ll lose so why tune in.

An all P5 tournament would get higher ratings for the broadcasters, which allows them to sell more commercials, and in turn allows the schools to make more money..,and that’s before accounting for the fact that the P5 makes less than 1/3 of the payout while accounting for nearly half the field. Just doubling their take home would be a win before you even factor in the higher ratings/advertising.

You could expand it to include all FBS and the Big East but then you could still end up with the same stinker of a final four that we had this year. But even so that new setup would still drive higher ratings overall.

Either way the basketball tournament is in for a shake up in the coming years and the underdog fans likely will not be pleased with the changes.

From that article - "why not throw out into the ether that Texas has the best roster in college football, when Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Texas A&M and Clemson — at least — have better talent."

This gif fits for multiple reasons

Yes, the writer's assertion that aggy has more talent makes me question his CFB writer credentials. But, it's SDS. Those will be our people next year.

    No kidding.

Jimbo has to have some aggy DNA in him.  An outsider can't assimilate that quickly, can he?

He's just telling the gumps what they want to hear. They're not hard to figure out.

    WTF?

Next, tell him Arkansas has a much bigger rivalry with UT, too. Oh, and poll LSU fans on who they'd rather play and beat.

You've been saying a lot of things in this thread that show you don't have any idea how bad things had gotten at CU.  Lots of kids on that roster had no business being on a P5 roster and the transfer offers they are getting (if they are getting them at all) prove that out.

    I'm a non-believer

A cursory glance at the guys who left backs up your assertion somewhat. I don't care to count how many "undecided" and G5/FCS transfers came from this bunch. But, if there's a coach who can fuck up a program, it's Karl Dorrell.

I was listening to a guest caller on the local sports talk radio station today. He laid out a really logical case that if you are a coach inheriting a team full of no talent scrubs, the fastest way to start winning is the get rid of all the scrubs as fast as possible. Its ugly as hell, but it does make sense. The transfer players and hot recruits won't gel or come together for the early season games, but they could finish the season on a good note and look better heading into next year.

I have a very hard time believing 50+ players on a P5 roster are scrubs, even at CU. Now if they're fuck-ups who aren't going to class or putting in the work, then yeah, go ahead and cut their asses. This season at CU will be an interesting case study in roster management.

Coming soon to the Big 10, even more shitty games!!! I bet the new TV partners are thrilled.

The B1G should be looking to play more games against the SEC and ACC. Games against the MAC and OVC just don't move the dial for anyone, especially TV partners. But, I guess App State is eager for another game in the Big House.

...And even if he can find 20-25 halfway decent players, the fact that he did this AFTER spring ball and they will only have a handful of weeks in the fall to integrate all of these new players into something approaching a coherent team is also hilarious.

They may very well go 1-11 again and then what? Purge the roster again and start over? What a fucking moron.

I had a couple of guys tell me it was perfectly fine to cut guys after they'd gone through CU spring practices. Like Deion couldn't have evaluated their film beforehand. He deserves another 1-11 shit sandwich, IMO. He's earned it.

That’s because it was part of the deal (along with the NFL guaranteeing Cleveland the next expansion team) the franchise made with Cleveland in order to drop their lawsuit. When the Oilers moved nobody gave a fuck; the city/county was too busy sucking Drayton “there’s nothing wrong with the Dome!” McLane’s dick. Of course, the second the Oilers announced their move, suddenly the Dome was a miserable piece of shit and Drayton had to have it replaced or he’d have to move to DC. So they built that, and 3 years later built a new football stadium anyway. That was about the time all of these ‘lifelong Oiler fans’ came out of the woodwork….

The worst part is they haven't done jackshit with the Astrodome. Just implode the sonofabitch already to give Reliant decent parking! Not that I'd buy tickets to a Texans game. Fuck 'em

The middle of the night move was the team that left Baltimore (the Colts), not the team that moved to it (Browns)….

    That's right.

I get my greedy owners confused in my old age. D'oh

I don't know what obligations Modell still owed Cleveland. Clearly enough to be compelled to leave the team name and colors behind for the new owner.

I know that even before Bud's contract with Drayton McClane and the Astros expired, he had agreed to move the team. Once that Astrodome lease expired, he owed no obligations to his baseball landlord, the Harris County Sports Authority, or the City of Houston, and was free to go.

I don't recall if Modell broke his lease at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, or what. He moved his team in the middle of the night in Mayflower trucks, though. Maybe that gave Cleveland some leverage? I don't care enough to look it up.

  12. Just now, Saint Tacky said:

The NFL didn't "allow" anything. That was worked out beforehand and was a concession Modell made to Cleveland in the agreement to facilitate his departure because Cleveland had the leverage to do so.

Okay, but why did Cleveland have more leverage than Houston?

    Enlighten us

  13. 1 minute ago, Saint Tacky said:

How could they have done that without owning it?

The NFL allowed Cleveland to retain their name, the Browns, and colors & history when Art Modell moved them to Baltimore. There's a precedent.

If they can win at Ole Miss and it's not a fluke, I think that will be indicative of a successful season

aggy's conference record is better in the SEC than it was in the Big 12 or SWC. At least until last season. Not one of those gumps has an explanation for this.

    Fuck aggy
