And that’s why review exists. The play should have been reviewed. Had we thrown that ball, it would have been reviewed immediately.

Maybe so, but I doubt our marginally competent replay officials would rule this backwards either. It's close, but a "lateral" isn't obvious. Especially after it was ruled incomplete on the field.

A lateral or backwards pass is a live ball. Period. That qualifies.

    FIFY, but otherwise you're correct

Most flank officials aren't going to call the pass in question backwards, so don't be disappointed when it's not ruled as such. When in doubt, a "lateral" is a forward pass. Unfortunately, this one is too close to call at game speed. IMO, the WR out-of-bounds ruling was much more egregious since the deep flank ruled him OB.

this is a big issue that i actually don't understand, because i played football in the early nineties. our fucking meathead dumbass coach told us "see what you are hitting and wrap up."

that solves two problems: targeting and tackling. this is basic fucking shit. if you turn yourself into a human missile, you should be on the bench. arms out, wrap up, head to the side, see what you are hitting.

Every dumbass, meathead coach said this. Even in the 80's when I played.

They were right then, and it's still correct today. The rugby style tackling works if your goal is to take the ball carrier down.

What would you call it if an option QB threw a pitch over the RB's head? A fumble. Same thing here. Stoops didn't fumble in that scenario, but the QB did for box score purposes. A lateral is just fumble in that situation.

    A backwards pass

If its a straight line its a lateral. Great camera angle. Thats a fumble

How can it be a fumble if Stoops never gained possession? Did one of our players recover the muff or even attempt to scoop & score? I don't recall.

  6. 1. We need to go back to whatever scheme we ran against Utah in the Alamo Bowl. That worked. 4 DL with gap responsibility/penetration?

    2. Tell PK, Choate, and Gideon to watch this Seahawks Tackling video with the defense.

Hey coach surly poster here: why is it after a team makes adjustments against your offense like ou did Saturday we can’t do shit after that? Are there counter adjustments made? Thanks I’ll hang up and listen.

The ATX lapdog press won't ask anything nearly that inquisitive.

In real time I thought it was forward.  Holy shit.  Another lucky break for those bastards!

When in doubt, it's a forward pass. That doesn't look backward to me, even in slow motion. It looks right in line laterally with the QB's release point.

Fun fact - you won't find the word "lateral" anywhere in the NCAA's rule book.

It was a joke.  But OU did apparently bitch about 11am games and so far, they've only had 2.  Texas has had 3 in a row, another this week and already has November 26 (KSU) at 11am.

It's tough to read sarcasm in print. Yeah, I've read OU has been bitching for years about 11 AM games and Bowlsby's response was, "You agreed to the Big 12 contract".

Okies tried to sell an OU/OSU package, but nobody was buying. Our new leadership finally decided it's time to move on.

Totally Agree.  Overshown is still new to playing LB so he can continue to improve.  The terrible play by the D-line is the biggest problem for this defense.  Second is probably poor tackling.

I'd say poor tackling is #1 and DB miscues playing the ball is #1b, but yeah, the DL has been disappointing thus far. This unit was supposed to be a team strength. Underwhelming

OU: We are leaving for the SEC because we are pissed at these 11am games!

Big 12/Fox/ESPN: Okay, our bad, we'll just give them to Texas.

No, we're leaving for the SEC for a rumored $20-30MM+ annually in TV money.

More "helmet games" is another value-added bonus. As is ESPN/SEC media hype.

Hope we get a lot more analysis about the defensive struggles from this past weekend.  Lots of personnel issues on a defense that has no "real stars".  When some of the defensive starters are on the sideline getting a blow, the back-up's really underperform.

Not seeing much pride or frustration about how poorly guys are playing on defense.  Get off fuckin' blocks, pressure their QB, and play physical.

Our tackling still really sucks -- just don't have any tough guy DAWGS on defense right now...

    FUCK

Closest one we have is Overshown, but he overruns too many plays and misses too many tackles. Good, but not great. I'd like to see Collins at DE more often. He bull-rushed OU's left tackle to the ground with a sack. He can't do worse than Bush or the other JAGs we have playing on the edge.

  13. 1. It's foolish to think the transfer portal will be a cure-all for the OL

    2. Y'all act like our younger OL can't improve and be coached up for future success. I expect Jones, Karic, Connor, Hookfin, etc. to all get better in the offseason and spring.

But, yeah, we can sure use more depth and need to recruit more OL. Most HS prospects are developmental projects who can use a redshirt. I'm confident we're gonna get better.

Playing DB requires playing with confidence. Our guys panic way too much when the ball is in the air. Both Foster and Dunn were in position to be able to make a play on the ball and both ended up stumbling/falling away from where the ball was going. It's maddening. Not sure what PK is supposed to do about individual effort like that until we get better talent.

As a coach at any level of this defense what do you say in tape sessions besides you guys have to give better effort to get off blocks and make tackles.

As a DL, you've gotta embrace hand-to-hand combat and flat out refuse to stay blocked. Rip, club, swim, spin, whatever, especially on obvious passing downs. You just can't "dance" and let these OL get their hands on your shoulders, bc then you're done.

Officials rarely call holding then, even if it's obvious.

If we had time I'd like to see Foster in Cook's role closer to the LOS and Cook tried at Safety.

Not sure how that'd work out but Foster is better when he's not in space. Been really happy with Cook

Maybe, but Foster missed the fucking tackle at the LOS when Williams broke out on his big run. He doesn't tackle that well, either. Certainly not up to his 5-star HS rating.

Yeah but you can’t give up bigger plays in the running game than the passing game imo. The hope is that inaccurate QB play helps you at the very least. As it stands we aren’t stopping anything and have to start somewhere surely

I thought the running, frosh QB would actually help us burn clock bc of passing deficiencies. Joke was on me when he hit a couple of bombs and ran unscathed for big plays.

  17. Bottom line is we have oftentimes have guys in position to make tackles, but they don't. And our DBs lack ball skills. D-Line gets pushed around too much when it's supposed to be a deep group collectively. That's not necessarily a scheme problem.

Watch the game or at least the highlights again. It's maddening.
