  1. Cleaned out the fridge tonight so a little of this and a little of that and thus dirty Gibsons which go with pretty much errything. Gin was Eden Mill Original Scottish Gin. Two in and Wednesday is almost the weekend.
  2. I see Mr. Butker is not acquainted with Grimes and Melania.
  3. Finished While My Sister Sleeps (2009) by Barbara Delinsky. It's short but not a beach read that's for sure. Not sure if I liked it but then the story involves a sibling who is incapacitated at a hospital and the family going through some things (to put it mildly and hopefully not spoiling the plot). Have begun Demon Copperhead (2022) by Barbara Kingsolver; a 2023 co-recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and thus far this has been rather good.
  4. Spouse made a riff on the Frenchie, which is a cocktail made with gin, elderflower liquour, and grapefruit juice, but subbed out the elderflower for Paula's grapefruit liquour (from Austin) and added a scant dose of lemon juice and it was quite tasty. I'm a fan of the citrus based cocktails and this one (okay, maybe two or three) hit the spot. Cheers!
  5. Because the concept of insect populations and their place in the food chain/world is confusing for some people. National Geographic had a nice gen pop article about insect populations several years ago that was quite informative.
  6. Finished The Motion Of The Body Through Space (2020) by Lionel Shriver. Slightly satirical story of a long married couple (ages 60+) and their attempts to come to terms with their physical age, retirement (his and not by choice), and the exercise 'craze' of pushing one's limits.
  7. The Traska Venturer is a pretty watch. As far as Rolex knockoff, that didn't really enter the picture. He likely doesn't care in that respect because that's not really the way he thinks about things. The DRZ03 is also pretty. Thanks for the additional info.
  8. Gibson night. Thomas Dakin gin, Noilly Prat vermouth, and 3 Mezzetta onions along with a spoonful of onion juice. Attempted to make a grapefruit Collins but it was ass and did not enjoy.
  9. We're celebrating 35 years, I'd like to see 36 so I'm going for the one that won't make him mad. While I like the Rolex, I'm going with my gut on this one. He's a good kind man and while I think he deserves the Rolex, if I believe he would prefer the less pricey option, that's what I will honor. Because, reasons.
  10. Apologies for the pic; this is a Fleur de Paradis cocktail; the recipe is Plymouth gin, St Germaine elderflower liqueur, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, orange bitters, and topped with champagne, or in our case, prosecco because real champagne is too dear. I made a roast Sunday with potatoes and carrots and tonight was the leftovers which I always always make a beef soup with the beef and onion and potato because that is what my late grandmother made and it just hits me right in the heart. Anyway, spouse comes home and I've got the cocktail ready and he opens the prosecco to top off the drink and with the leftover bubbly we make a kir (1/2 ounce creme de cassis and prosecco ~ four ounces).) I am quite giddy because it's Monday and life is more than just the little irritations and really about loving the people around us. Here's to what and who really gets us through the week!
  11. Never grown them, only green beans but I've had success with using a pot for many of them. It does seem to keep the pests and critters off a little better. If you have rabbits visit, they love to nibble on the leaves so the ones in the ground may be vulnerable to that. That's all I've got. Oh, and beans don't usually need fertilizer for good production.
  12. Sooo, maybe I can spoil him anyway. I showed him the Monta Noble and he was intrigued. We have an anniversary approaching so I'm filing that little bit of info away to check out as a possibility. He seems to prefer the 'plain' watches and this was the one I marked: It's got the second hand sweep (a must) and the date (preferred).
  13. You're not kidding about the promo/marketing. I mean, Omega and other well known companies grab brand ambassadors (Andrew Garfield one of their celeb famous ones, while Ryan Gosling promotes Tag Heuer) because red carpet types or business 'influencers' (gawd I hate that word) photos are pored over by males and females alike and that is the larger audience of fandoms and general public but for a newer small company, getting on board with the insta/watch fans/etc to create some buzz seems like the most ideal and less costly way to do it. I hope he's able to make a go of it.
  14. While I personally prefer gin to vodka in the martini, and the gin drink reached peak popularity during Prohibition (due to the ease of DIY "bathtub" gin) I'm not going to quibble with any imbibers over variations using vodka, nor the ratios (I prefer 4:1), nor the development of using London Dry versus the original recipes that used Old Tom style gin. What I would suggest is that when you've got the opportunity, try using Noilly Prat dry vermouth because I think it's worth the spend if you drink martinis much at all. FTR, we use Hayman's London Extra Dry gin on the reg, but have no issue subbing in other gins because it's part of the fun of mixing cocktails at home. Grab what's handy and go. But, sometimes (we) I want one that just tastes a little more luxe and that's what we use for a solid dry martini. With an olive. Occasionally dirty with a spoonful of the juice. Rarely a lemon because those disappear fast in our house.
  15. I would love to buy the white dial Treiber for my husband but he would kill me. I prefer the pale blue/green dial for the aesthetic and the cool factor but again, that would be a no go. It's a shame as we could afford for him to have a nicer watch than his daily but he is the 'if it's not broke why fix it' type and I respect it. But, yeah, it's a beautiful watch and I'd love to spoil him with it. (actually compared to some of the other watches I like and would like to buy for him, the Treiber is not that expensive really).
  16. Gin or vodka? If gin, what brand? I'm making a roast with veg tomorrow so we went light tonight with soup plus fried sardines with lemon & garlic on wasa crackers. Spouse was cooking so I poured a batch of Italian Grayhound cocktails to use up some of the grapefruit juice we had in the fridge. Mmm, I do love those.
  17. It may be a lost art, but I'm not sure it's really a word. it's like "gifted" IMO. Why use focusness when one can use 'focus' or gifted when one can use the various forms of 'give'? As in I gave, you gave, we have given.... We are descending into grammar chaos and it's so sad.
  18. No pics because I'm lazy and I take horrible photos but ended up making a Negroni while cooking the spaghetti alla puttanesca and assembling the salad (leaf lettuce, beet greens from the garden, pickled onion, radish, and a light dressing) accompanied by a nice bordeaux: Château Le Conseiller 2016. Not an expensive wine but it'll do. I'm lightly buzzed on a Friday night. Life is good. À votré sante!
  19. Those pics are very very nice.
  20. Not so much a partier; but just having a meal and a cocktail, glass of wine, etc and conversation helps close out the work day. Making pasta tonight so a nice cab franc is on the menu.
  21. Please do take photos or blog here when you arrive; sounds like a fantastic trip and very happy for you!
  22. We've had several rounds of green beans harvested and one more batch is flowering and then that's the last of them. Tomatoes haven't ripened but are coming online soon. Lettuce is almost finished. I'm forgoing the peppers this year which is causing some regrets but after last year's heat and busy schedule I'm going to stop after the tomatoes, cukes, and zucchini are finished and hold out until fall on more veggies and just keep the flowers maintained during the worst of July/Aug.
