  1. Back when I was watching this develop in real time and much more active on the board here, Twitter was not the hot mess it is now. Roger Stone, Ali Alexander, and representatives from the Senate and House were doing a fine job on their personal accounts of fomenting the events of January 6th. One can parse out the details of line-skirting verbiage by the smarter reps (looking at you Ted) or why certain enforcement agencies were or were not called or prepped or what have you. But our country was thisclose to having duly elected individuals killed from mob violence. That anyone lost their lives that day was a tragedy and the officers that were injured defending the transfer of power that was anything but peaceful comes down to one party and specifically one person. The insurrection came from within and it was supported by those who spit on the idea that citizens have the right to elect whom they please.
  2. Agree. It takes a few generations for the spice to take hold ya know?
  3. No kidding. While Surly, and Shaggy before it, is/was well known for line-crossing humor there actually is a line that the nudge-nudge wink-winkers unabashedly cross with the comeback of 'can't you take a joke' and 'this is the Surl and leave if you don't like it.' Same posters can be notoriously thin-skinned when jokes turn personal towards things they hold dear. Going from a five year old's humor: "He said 'poop'!" (the first part of the thread) to a fifteen year old's humor (i.e. the joke where everyone knows it's beyond poor taste but we're going to turn a blind eye because boys will be boys and excused) is not the world changing 'what starts here' of which a UT grad might like to claim, it's the opposite and apparently it's not going away any time soon.
  4. Rep for the reminder! We love this show!
  5. Ditto. I do have other places to satisfy a taco crave, but that one was worth the visit.
  6. Y'all know this, but if you consider the history of who settled where and what was available when many of the recipes became tradition it does make sense. The upper midwest and carb filled bakeries, fish frys, and beer because no one was growing jalapenos in January and it's not like a 1950/60s grocery was likely to carry them either, although chili powder may have been available....I guess I don't worry about it too much. My late grandmother-in-law was born in a sod house and canned everything because they didn't have electricity until the late 1950's or early 1960's. They went to the grocery store once a month she said, so the idea of cheese enchiladas fresh made would've seemed beyond exotic.
  7. What???? I just had the Mr. Orange taco last week and I love that one. So much flavor.
  8. Agree with your take. If Trump does not get the nod, then they'll either sit out or vote for whomever has the 'R.' I'm rather worried about the whole 'removing from the ballot' thing as setting a not so great precedent for drummed up foolish reasons being floated in the future for election officials (whose offices have been increasingly taken over by bad faith actors) to remove viable candidates in order to remove options for voters. IOW, I have concerns that while the Trump/Colorado situation seemed to be legit, that perhaps it was a trial balloon in order to make elections less about worthy candidates and more about rigging the vote since god forbid the voters actually get to exercise their constitutional rights.
  9. Made orecchiette with guanciale, rapini, and pecorino romano accompanied with a rather meh bordeaux but after a glass or two everything is coming up roses. Tomorrow is Monday so as Rose Castorini says, "I just want you to know that no matter what you do, you're going to die just like everybody else." (Moonstruck 1987)
  10. It's Norway, but you're near enough to Oslo perhaps to stop by Helly Hansen on your later London trip? Way back when (i.e. pre-Texas) I used to run in some of their winter athletic gear and it was worth every penny. They were ahead of the game back then when it came to tech fabrics, etc. Anyway, their parkas are built for the cold, slightly more expensive than some brands but not quite in the top of the Canada Goose range either.
  11. I have a trailing rosemary that survived The Great Freeze with a little damage here and there but I blanketed the thing to the nth degree. It's in a sunny spot near the front and slightly sheltered and perhaps that helped. I love being able to snip a few pieces whenever I'm roasting a chicken. But rosemary does seem rather fickle with the cold.
  12. 2023 was a disastrous year for our garden. The extreme heat combined with being away visiting family meant slim pickings although our neighbor who kept an eye on the place did get a nice crop or two of my green beans, lettuce, and tomatoes before the temps climbed. Going into fall the jalapenos, eggplant, and basil did well as expected, yielding several dishes of pesto, salsa, etc--little buggers love the warm weather but overall it was challenging. New year and optimism abounds, however. Due to various issues, I elected to avoid a fall planting so am starting with the early spring stuff and it's the usual greens which I love--the spinach, the lettuce, etc. The flowers will come later, although I've noticed the larkspur and poppies have been sprouting from the seeds I scattered at the end of summer/fall. Although it belongs in the lawn & landscape thread, gosh darn was it difficult to keep a decent turf going. I'm going to need remediation with some fresh sod in the dead spots just to get it back into shape this spring. Some of it will cover during the growing season but I'm going to hasten it along with a few squares here and there. What are you lot planning? Got anything growing now?
  13. Eh well, they might, but my family could happily fund a pub for a year, enjoying the libations and pub fare with walks in between for fresh air without a twinge of conscience because a good Irish pub is heaven on earth.
  14. With respect to the media, print or otherwise, one item often overlooked is the inability of readers to not only read the article from start to finish (we'll set aside critically for the time being) but most importantly to examine the article, whether print or online, to note: is this in the editorial or OPINION section versus the factual AP type news. While even the fact based news articles have a 'slant' to them (I.e sources cited but perhaps some sources 'ahem' omitted), there has been a decline in readers paying any attention whatsoever to whether an article is, in essence, the platform of someone whom the newsagent has allowed to publish under the aegis of free speech. Regardless of an inherent 'slant' of a specific publication, the appearance in the opinion column does not necessarily give legitimacy and any reader with an education beyond the eighth grade ought to know this. Alas, points earned for the team or to confirm biases and rationalizations matter more than actually, you know, what the article truly conveys, which in some cases is just blathering nonsense. When one repeats that nonsense, then we have, you know, a whole lot of hot air.
  15. In addition, those zip ties several "tourists" were carrying around were just for decoration I'm sure. The tasers, ball bats, etc are exactly what I take when I visit other official buildings like the DMV.
  16. Oh gee, Mr. Fuentes no problem there. I won't say a word when I walk up and place a used tampon in your hand. That's the closest you're ever going to get to a female's intimate parts heaven knows.
  17. This is very specific. What's your user name on Archive of Our Own or Tumblr?
  18. I've got one that sort of fits the qualifications. I watched it again within the last couple of months so somewhat fresh in my memory. Last Christmas (2019) with Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Emma Thompson...at first it seems like a holiday movie with a little romance, a little laughter and then you find out that I mean the movie manages to end on an upbeat tone, but instead of the Wham song, maybe they should've ended with Celine Dion? Which funny enough her song was the theme from Titanic which has been mentioned above...
  19. Agreed and it goes for wives as well.
  20. The wording of that article is confusing me; anyone else have difficulty with it? So out-of-town relations arrive at house and Whoopsie!: Someone's in the freezer. They call authorities but are not related to Ice Ice Granny but instead someone who lives there currently. Yet, Frigidaire Female may have lived at the house at some point. So, who lives there now and why are they not really mentioned?
  21. A&M maintains they've been aboveboard with all entities, regs, etc (*cough BSL coverup in 2006/7 *cough) but time will tell I guess.
  22. I listened for awhile and yeah could not finish. Was thinking this AI is going to be very disruptive in the coming years. That was a pretty realistic Paul Harvey like voice. Best line during the bit I listened to was when the narrator was describing God: And God said, "I need somebody with arms...." All I could think of was, "well God, you failed didn't you because the man doesn't even have decent hands."
